Victory in Europe Day celebrated

The children at St Paul’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet enjoyed a VE theme when they dressed in period clothing, sang wartime songs and ate food that would have been served during the war years such as spam sandwiches, jam tarts and homemade lemonade. The staff also dressed up and the school secretary joined in to sing Vera Lynn.A great day was had by all.

Ukuleles at AshcottChildren from Woodpeckers Class at Ashcott Primary School put on a lively performance for parents and relatives as they took to the stage with their ukuleles. As part of the School Focus on raising the profi le of reading and fostering a love of literature, Meare Village Primary held a Big Christmas Read and invited parents and carers to come into school to share stories with the children. Mrs Fellows, Literacy Co-ordinator said “There was a lovely atmosphere in school and the children were very excited to have their favourite stories read whilst enjoying a hot chocolate.”

The whole class have been learning to play the Ukulele since September thanks to the support of SOAP (the Supporters of Ashcott Primary) who fund a visiting music teacher Mrs Louise Palmer to teach the children (and staff) to play. Toby’s Christmas DrumChildren from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at Ashcott Primary School put on an enchanting performance of ‘Toby’s Christmas Drum’. The performance was very well attended by members of the local community and there were defi nitely plenty of ‘aah’ moments for the audience to enjoy! Thank you to all of the staff for their hard work in putting on another fantastic Christmas performance.

Owl VisitChris Sperring from the Somerset Wildlife Trust and his barn owl visited the children at St Pauls’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet. Chris talked to the children about how to help barn owls create their own habitats as part of a project providing boxes.In the afternoon the children from the Eco Club and Forest School attended nestbox-building workshops with Lyn and Keith Hall.

Maple class at Ditcheat Primary School performed ‘It’s a party’. The performance was well attended by family and friends. The children thoroughly enjoyed all the singing that played a large part in this remake of the traditional nativity.

The children at Ditcheat Primary School were kindly given a Christmas Tree by Tesco. The children decorated the tree ready for their school Christmas disco. Great fun was had by all.

The Christmas Story was really brought alive for the children of Meare Village Primary School when the Nativity cast fi lmed their production on location around the village and in the school community. The Shepherds wore wellies to watch over their fl ocks at Station Farm in Westhay. Mary rode “Billy’ the donkey from Weston-super-Mare, who was on holiday in the area at the time, across the Somerset Levels to get to Bethlehem. With some expert help from AVM and their award winning Samsung visualiser, the school’s fi lm club used green screening technique so that the angels could fl y and ‘Lily’ the North Star could actually appear in the sky. The primary school’s animation team recreated the scene of the Wise Men’s journey on their camels and the fi lm version of the story starred Luke Skywalker & Spiderman. The Christmas Story Movie was edited and screened in house and made into a DVD for parents to keep.

Cheeky Chimps Pre-School has raised an amazing £265 from recycling all their old clothes with the Bags2School Scheme. Everyone dug out their wardrobes and got rid of unwanted clothes, curtains, teddies and even socks. The scheme pays 50 pence per kilo and the fabrics are sold to be recycled or re-used all over the world. This fundraising is all part of an effort to bring in some money to refurbish the playground for the pre-schoolers and children from Aschcott Primary School that use the breakfast club and after school care at Cheeky Chimps. Over £300 was raised in October 2012 at the Halloween Disco which was held in the Ashcott Village Hall. Manager Jean Thompson said “We have been raising funds and applying for grants for sometime to renovate the playground and install an all weather shelter so the children can play outside on even the most miserable day. We are now drawing up plans and are hoping to be

Our children’s birthdays come round so fast every year and for most of us we have the same panic each year “What party am I going to organise?!”. There always seems to be so much to do when arranging a birthday party and never enough time to do it in. Use our check list to make sure you’ve covered all the bases.

The Check list:InvitationsAbout three weeks before the party you’ll need to send out your invitations make sure they include the following information: Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. Your address and phone number. The date, start and fi nish time of the party. The theme, if you are having one.Theme and decorationsMake sure you order any decorations and balloons in plenty of time before the party. Stir in the chopped glace cherries and almond extract and bring together to form a dough.2. Roll out on a lightly fl oured surface, then stamp out biscuits using a heart shaped cutter. Keep re-rolling the trimmings until all the dough is used. Carefully transfer the biscuits to baking trays lined with parchment and bake for just 8-10 mins until pale golden.3. Using an upturned bottle top or similar, press gently into the centre of each biscuit to make a round indent. Spoon in a little jam and return to the oven for 2 mins. Remove and cool on a wire rack, before dusting with icing sugar to serve.

Leave aside until set, then stamp out shapes using cookie star cutters - if the cutter is digging into your hands ( as the Florentine mix may be a little hard) rest a small plate or pan on top of it and push down on this instead.

These bath salts are a fun crafty gift which you can make to give to your mum on Mother’s Day.

You will need:Plain bath salts (like Epsom salts)

Essential oil Powder or paste food colouring (not liquid)

Glass jar Pretty fabric

Put some of the plain bath salts into an old bowl. Put in a tiny amount of essential oil (about 2 drops for every cup of salts)

and a tiny amount of food colouring. Stir well with an old wooden spoon until all of the salts absorb the colour. Repeat

Helpful Homework Hints for Parents

The Home-School Relationship

The relationship between the home and the school is important. If you want your child to achieve academic success, you must become involved in the educational process. Here are some ways to develop a good attitude toward homework in your child and a high-quality relationship with your child’s school:

• Talk to your child about school. Does your child understand why he goes to school? Discuss how school is one way that children discover who they are and who they may become. Talk to your child about what he likes and dislikes about school and why. Let him know that he can always come to you with problems.

• Communicate with your child’s teacher. Plan to meet with the teacher at least three times a year to discuss your child’s progress. Once a relationship is established, it is easier to examine diffi cult issues, if they arise.

• Learn about the curriculum at your child’s school. The more you know about what will be taught in the classroom, the better you will be able to help your child with homework.

• Find out what the school or district homework policy is. It will take the guesswork out of determining whether or not your child has homework.

My name is Colin and I am a corn snake. I live in my glass tank and I am a very good pet as I like being handled by my owner and I am very easy to keep.I am originally from Florida in the USA and I used to live in a woodland and would catch mice, young rats, birds and bats and other small creatures for my dinner.I now live with my family and they feed me baby mice, baby rats and chicks. As we are constrictor snakes we like to bite our prey and then wrap our bodies around it to suffocate it before eating it but my owner gives me frozen mice, which I love. I eat 2 mice every week.We also like to have a large water bowl to drink from and this should be fi lled with bottled water rather than water from the tap. We like to have fresh water every day.We also like to hide and my owner has given me some terracotta pots and plastic pots with holes in for me to hide in. I do not need any UV light in my tank as I love natural light which shines on me from the window. I have a heat mat that is on one side of my tank and I like to move from the heat to the cold so that I can maintain a regular body temperature.We can live for up to 25 years if we get lots of tender, loving care from our owners.loving care from our owners.
