Torch day at St Paul’s School
On the ‘torch day’ (Tuesday 22nd May) St Paul’s Primary School welcomed visiting guest schools, Oakhill, Castle Cary and Evercreech who also took part in some athletic activities with us on the school fi eld, both before and after we all watched the torch. Everyone had a great time.

Coxley children enjoy the celebrations
Pupils at Coxley Primary School have really entered into the recent celebrations. With the Olympic Torch passing right outside on 22nd May, the school lessons were abandoned for the morning while the children waved their fl ags and cheered as the Torch made its way via Coxley from Glastonbury to Wells.
This was followed on 1st June by a Jubilee Party. Her Majesty the Queen and members of the royal family joined pupils, parents and younger siblings for a party tea, with super cakes made by generous parents. Her Majesty made a heartfelt speech to her subjects and ceremonially cut the giant cake.

The children at Meare Primary School enjoyed a Coronation which saw Kings and Queens crowned and swearing their oaths to the Commonwealth.The ceremony was performed by Archbishop Driscoll and was followed by a street party in the playground. It was a really lovely event.

Healthy play timesThe children of Ditcheat Primary School took part in a recent music concert. All of the children took part, some singing, some playing ukuleles, violin, recorders, piano, xylaphones and guitar. Some of these instruments are taught in school and others have been taught elsewhere, and the children were invited to bring their instruments along and play. Parents were invited to come along to watch and enjoy a lovely afernoon of musical talent, starting with the very young and fi nishing with the oldest children

The children at Ashcott Primary School and Cheeky Chimps Playgroup had an exciting Jubilee Picnic with fl ags, bunting and Union Jacks galore! All of the children came to school in red, white and blue creating a colourful scene reminiscent of days gone by. Emotions were stirred as the children stood to sing the National Anthem in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, before all of the staff and children sat down to a delicious picnic together. Many children had made crowns for the occasion as part of a fun week of Jubilee activities.

Ditcheat Primary School won the local schools football competition recently which was played at Ansford, their local secondary school. Ditcheat won all their matches against all the seven feeder schools who were there. The success story continued as their team then went on to play against other schools in the district which overall they won. They progressed into county level at Bridgwater and also won that, the team went to the Cadbury Club for the South West Region, again coming through the winners, they then played the National Football Schools at Watford’s training ground. Massive congratulations to the football team! Ditcheat were runners up in the ESFA National Finals played at Watford. They are only the second team in Somerset to ever make it this far. As you can imagine, we are incredibly proud of the whole squad.

The children from Holly Class at Evercreech Church of England Primary School would like to say thank you to PC Lambert, who paid a visit last week. PC Lambert, who is also a parent at the school, visited the reception class as part of their topic ‘People Who Make a Difference’. The children were fascinated by his uniform but his police car with its lights and sirens was a big hit with Holly Class and Acorns Preschool children alike.

St Paul’s Primary School enjoyed a Super Schools day with visiting gold medallist Julian Golley – who asked for some volunteers for his demonstration. Many of the children volunteered along with the male teachers Mr Fingleton, Mr Gay and Mr Byrne.The children completed exercises to raise money and then had their photo taken with Julian. Afterwards Julian gave an inspirational talk about his career, including how he began and how he explored his talents. The money made was shared between Super Schools - supporting future athletes - and St Paul’s School.

The children from year 2 enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London. They designed and made fi re engines as part of their DT work and had a visit to a fi re station to see how things had changed. The children enjoyed themselves and now know all about the story of Pudding Lane.

New Somerset Skills & Learning Brochure Out Now!
Next time you visit the beach, comb the shores with your children to gather supplies for your own spectacular beach sculptures! Please note very strong glue is needed to make these sculptures, which, for safety, should only be handled by adults.You will need:Shells, pebbles, driftwood, or any interesting bits found along the beach Strong glue (we used a hot glue gun)Take a walk along the beach to collect some bits. Look what interesting shapes that you can find. Bring the best of your collection home with you.Arrange your bits into the shape that you like. Older children, carefully supervised, can glue their creations together. Younger children should ask an adult to glue them together. Leave to dry.
Beach Sculptures
Choose a pretty design like our butterflies, or perhaps decorate with Chinese characters for something a little more dramatic! You will need:A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm, two wide ice lolly sticks, PVA (white) glue, sticky tape, colouring pens.Decorate your paper with the pens. We went for butterflies and flowers but older children might like to try something more authentic like blossom or calligraphy.‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.Glue a lolly stick onto each end of the paper. The lolly sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.
Chinese Fan Craft
Here’s a fabric flower craft which will use up your scraps, provide practice to learn to sew, and create a really pretty display! These flower “yoyos” can be wired as we have done here, or you can glue the flowers onto sticks and stand them in a pot, sew them onto headbands, hats, T-shirts or bags, or stitch a safety pin on the back to make pretty flower brooches, which make lovely little gifts. You will need:Fabric in 2 coordinating designs, buttons, thread, garden wire.Cut 2 paper circles about 4 and 6 inches in diameter. Pin each to one of the pieces of fabric and cut out. Alternatively draw around cups and saucers onto the fabric.Cut a piece of thread long enough to go all of the way around the edge of your biggest circle with some spare.
Fabric FlowerKnot one end and thread the other.Sew a loose running stitch around the outside of the largest circle, finishing with the thread to the right side of the fabric.Pull the thread so the fabric gathers. Secure the gap with a few stitches. Knot the fabric and tie off.Repeat with the smaller circle.When you have your two yo-yos, layer them up with a button over the top hole. Throw a BYOB party. This is cheap, imagination-driven fun. You wield cutting implements and supply lots of tape. Guests are charged with one simple task: Bring. Your. Own. Box. Together kids can construct a fort or spaceship or whatever they please out of the boxes, then spend hours playing in it. There are plenty of other ways to amuse kids with cardboard boxes too.
Make sponge bombs out of cheap household sponges, then soak and use for tossing games. Unlike water balloons, these will last all summer
Take late-night walks. Kids enjoy this even more when they are in charge of the torches.
Encourage grubby fun. Designate an area of the garden where kids can play right in the dirt. They might want to use it to build mountains and valleys for their toy dinosaurs, cars, or action fi gures. They might want to add water to make mud pies. They might want to dig holes, perhaps looking for archaeological fi nds.
Throw a garden Olympics party. Create competitions like sack races, tumbling, Frisbee discus throws, and tossing bean bags into a bucket.
Go on a camera scavenger hunt. First choose a theme, like Ten Things That Move or A Dozen Signs of Summer. Then send kids out with cameras (disposable cameras) to grab some images. Encourage them to fi nd creative, funny, and unusual ways to interpret the theme. Pop the photos up on the computer screen or take disposable cameras to a one-hour processing shop.
Stage a treasure hunt. First, hide a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be a toy (it could be a cool drink or a packed lunch!). Next, hide clues. For non-readers the clues can be rebus pictures, digital photos, or magazine cut-outs. For readers try riddles, short rhymes, or question-based clues. Each one should lead the child to a spot where the next clue is hidden. If you have more than one child let everyone search for clues and fi gure them out together. Or stage treasure hunts for each child in turn using the collaborative efforts of those who are waiting. Once kids are familiar with treasure hunts they can easily set them up on their own.

The Summer holidays are nearly upon us and its good to get some dates in the diary for some exciting days out for the whole family to enjoy. According to the met offi ce July and August are set to be sunny and dry so its a great time to put those rain coats and wellies away and get out and about and enjoy the British Summer, whilst it lasts. The summer holidays gives us a chance to spend some quality family time together and take some time out from the hussle and bussle of the normally daily routine.
Living in the South West we are lucky enough to have some fantastic places to visit right on our doorstep from exhilarating horse riding and go-karting to chilled out days sightseeing, there’s so much to do in the local area that you don’t need to spend an arm and leg on fuel to get there. Also a recent study has indicated that there is strong evidence of a link between active school children and
academic performance, which is due to the increased blood fl ow to the brain, so not only will you be having fun but potentially creating a child genius by getting out and about and being active!!
A great activity for the whole family to enjoy is horse riding, what better way to spend the day than trekking across the beautiful English countryside with the children, plus its a great
fun way to burn off up to 300 calories. This could develop in to a hobby for all the family or you could have the next undiscovered Frankie Dettori amongst your brood. A visit to one of the many working farms in the area that are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around.
Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet, it could be something that they can take back to school in September to WOW their new teacher with.

NAUGHTS AND CROSSESDraw a grid in the sand; make it three squares by three squares.Person A uses Naught to mark their spotPerson B uses Crosses to mark their spotEach player takes it in turns until someone gets three in a row. It does not matter if it’s from side to side or up or down. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every game you win, or simply make it the best of three.
SAND MEMORY GAMEYou need two people to play this game.Person A creates a grid in the sand, it’s up to you how big you make it, and we recommend perhaps four squares by four squares.Then person A, using shells has to create a random pattern by putting the shells in several squares.Person A should allow person B a minute to look at the grid pattern and then cover it with a beach towel. Person B then has to draw their own grid and see if they can remember the layout of person A’s grid.You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every time you get it right, or simply make it the best of three.
WATER BALLOON GAMERegardless of how many kids there are fi ll up a water balloon with water and play pass the balloon, picking people randomly to pass it to, however don’t pass throw it high and call out their name, then it’s up to them to catch it. When and if it’s dropped, just fi ll up another balloon and start again.
BEACH BOWLING GAMEThere are two different ways to play this game. You can either make 10 pins by fi lling up a cup with wet sand and then turn it upside down to make a pin (just like you would make a sand castle).Or if you prefer you can dig a hole for the pins, allowing the ball to roll into the holes.Either way you put one in the fi rst row, two in the second row and so on until you have ten pins.Draw a line in the sand and get each person to have two turns at rolling a ball toward the pins, re-creating the pins each time.The person who knocks over the most pins, wins, or alternatively the person gets the ball in the highest scoring hole wins (with each hole being worth a different amount).
BEACH OLYMPICSDepending on the number of kids you have with you at the beach, you could break them up into teams. Then create a list of events, with teams scoring points for each win. The winning team should have a prize.Some events you could have included:Three legged race – tie two kids together by the ankles, encouraging them to coordinate their movements to run. Whichever team makes it to the end fi rst wins.Long Jump – Draw a line in the sand. Have each kid run up to the line and jump. Whoever jumps the longest distance wins.Hurdles – Lay a number of items in the sand, twigs, spades, whatever you have handy. Get each child to hop the course, hoping over the items. The kid to do it in the fastest time wins.
