Pupils at St Mary’s Primary and Farrington Gurney Schools are all learning about the Olympics this term. With only 200 days to go the Olympics are dominating the British news and as part of their creative curriculum pupils have chosen which aspect of the Olympics they would like to learn about. The Grand Opening Ceremony was a fun-fi lled way to launch the whole-school topic with children. At St Mary’s, in their house teams, children enjoyed working together, supporting each other to create house fl ags, chants and a whole school dance. The grand fi nale was an awe-inspiring balloon launch with every pupil letting go of a balloon in their house colours. The balloons were found as far away as Stonehenge and even Southampton! At Farrington Gurney each house group chose a country to represent. Mexico, France, Greece and USA were chosen. Each

House found out about their country and presented some information, made fl ags and created dances for the opening ceremony in the Memorial Hall. All the children learnt the National Anthem and sang it to start the ceremony. Later in the term the Junior classes from Farrington Gurney will be visiting St. Mary’s and the Infants from St. Mary’s will be going to Farrington for a fun fi lled Olympic learning day.

Kilmersdon Village School held their ‘Lets Get Cooking’ clubs, which involved parents, teachers & pupils cooking several easy to cook dishes together.Pupils were taught about using different utensils, chopping ingredients, weighing & measuring & hygiene whilst cooking their chosen dishes. The food cooked ranged from baked apple & cinnamon pancakes to blueberry muffi ns, delicious sandwich fi llings & smoothies, using fresh ingredients. Grace Watts in Year 3 said, “It was brilliant fun cooking with mum & my friends in school”.

You could have heard a pin drop when Lily Adman sang her fi rst notes to over 800 people at Bath Abbey in December. The applause at the end was incredible. The moment can only be described as magical when a group of singers and musicians from Year 6 walked to the front of the Abbey and performed ‘O Holy Night’. There was added praise from members of the County Music Service who said that it was a very memorable performance for them. The whole of Year 6 were a credit to the School and to the Community.

Magazines mascot competition and the team at HEY! Magazine arranged for Stuart to go along to the school as a surprise for Christian and present him with his prize in the school assembly. The

year 6 children welcomed Stuart into their classroom and asked him questions. Stuart enjoyed his visit to the school and encouraged the children to make the most of their sporting achievements and strive to achieve their dreams.

Children at Peasedown St John School took a step back in time as they started the new term with Friday being a whole school History Day. Every class in the school had researched a different period of history from Ancient Egyptians to the Victorian age. On Friday teachers and children were in costume so that walking around the school felt like travelling though time. Teachers prepared creative and engaging lessons throughout the day with lots of ‘hands on’ activities and the day ended with a whole school assembly that celebrated their achievements so that children went home with a real buzz for history. Jenni Dent the school’s History Leader commented she was, “delighted with the response of children and teachers. We all know children learn best when they are having fun and that’s just what we have had today!” For further information please contact Julia Battersby or David Tilling, Headteachers, Peasedown St John School. Telephone 01761 432311.

Pupils at St Johns Primary School, Midsomer Norton, got into the festive spirit by watching Miracle On 34th Street, dressed in their pj’s, dressing gowns and slippers. They also each bought in their favourite teddy for the ‘festive slumber party’. Everyone including the teachers and teaching assistants enjoyed a mug of hot chocolate and a marshmallow whilst watching the fi lms, surrounded by Christmas trees and fairy lights.

A new fundraising group has launched in Timsbury to help an 8 year old local boy get a powered wheelchair.Alexander is an 8 year old boy who lives in Farmborough, and goes to St Mary’s Primary School in Timsbury. Alexander was born with pseudoachondroplasia, which is a painful form of dwarfi sm that affects the bones and joints. His condition is progressive, his joints are deteriorating and he has osteoarthritis which causes him a lot of pain.Alexander now needs a power wheelchair which will help him race around with his friends, like any other 8 year old boy. Unfortunately the NHS will not provide Alexander with a power chair. So Alexander’s family, friends, and parents and staff at St Mary’s Primary School have launched Alexander’s New Wheels, a fundraising campaign to raise the £8000 needed to buy the chair. An Auction of Promises and raffl e will be held on Saturday 17th March in Timsbury, and raffl e prizes and “promises” are needed. Local people are asked to think if they have something they can donate, or an hour of their time and talents they could give to this very worthy cause. Donations for the auction can be as simple as a pledge to do an hour’s weeding, to wash someone’s car, a lunch at a local café, or as imaginative and creative as donors like. All pledges will then be auctioned off on the night which promises to be a fun event for the whole community.

To donate a promise or a raffl e prize, please contact us by telephone on 01761 471896. Or write to us at Alexander’s New Wheels, c/o Sarah Lord, 4 Homefi eld, Timsbury, Bath BA2 0LU or to fi nd out more about Alexander’s New Wheels you can go to our website at www.alexandersnewwheels.co.uk

St. John’s Primary School, Midsomer Norton, have been visiting local places of historical interest. Amazingly, these trips have not been planned by the teachers but the children themselves! Year 6 pupils contacted MSN railway station and the town hall to ask if they could use these places to role play the experiences of evacuees who came to Midsomer Norton over 70 years ago. The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Centre was amazing and the pupils got to see a genuine Anderson Shelter and an incredible mini-museum housed in an old pill box. In the town hall, the Sarah Ann Trust gave them the spacious top hall where pupils recreated the experience of evacuees being chosen by their new families. They have also been visited by local people who were themselves evacuated to Midsomer Norton all those years ago.

Keyring Or Bag Dangle

You will need: paper plate; pens or paints; red glitter/glitter glue; glue; yellow and brown paper; googly eye1. Fold the paper plate in half 2. Colour the plate in brown or orange except for the robin’s redbreast which will need to be red! 3. Add some glue and glitter or some glitter glue to the robin’s redbreast 4. Cut a beak and feet shapes from yellow paper and attach with glue to the inside of the plate 5. Cut a wing shape and glue onto the robin’s body 6. Glue on a googly eye. This would make a great mantelpiece or window sill decoration, or a special Christmas card

Glittery Valentine’s Card

You will need: a card blank, some squeezy glue, some glitter• Using the squeezy glue, draw a special design onto the card blank. (You could do a heart shape or a fl ower!)• Carefully shake the glitter over the card, making sure that all the glue is covered in the glitter.• Gently, shake off the excess glitter onto a piece of paper or a tray. This should leave your design all sparkly and glittery.• The excess glitter can then be carefully poured back into the glitter container to use another day.• Leave the card for a while so that all the glittery glue dries.

Tissue Paper Flowers

You will need: sheets of tissue paper, scissors, pipe cleaner, sticky tape• Cut strips of tissue paper into different widths • Fold the strips back and forward into a concertina• Cut a petal shape out of the folds of paper BUT leave a strip across the bottom of the paper so you are left with strips of petals not individual petals• Repeat this several times with the different width strips• Take a pipe cleaner and begin wrapping the strips of petals around the pipe cleaner ‘stem’. Put the smallest petals on fi rst and then the bigger petals afterwards.• To help secure the petals, you can wrap the pipe cleaner around the petals. Or you can use sticky tape around the petals and pipe cleaner.HINT – try using different colours of paper or different shaped petals to create different fl owers.

Lollipop Lovebug

You will need: a lollipop, some coloured foam or card, a pipe cleaner, some googly eyes, glue and sticky tape• Fold a piece of foam or card in half and cut a heart shape out, leaving a wide base at the fold of the foam so you can open it out and have some heart-shaped wings. • Repeat this with a different colour foam or card but make the heart-shaped wings a smaller size.• Glue the smaller wings onto the large wings• Take the lollipop and place it in the middle of the wings. Use sticky tape to keep the lollipop in place.• Add some blobs of glue onto the lollipop and stick on 2 googly eyes.• Cut a pipe cleaner in half and then make 2 antenna shapes. Use sticky tape to attach these to the back of the lollipop or wings.HINT – the lollipop lovebug can then be stuck onto a card or simply given as a gift!

PARTIES PROJECT: Exploring the hidden life of insects in our woods.GOAL: To understand that insects live in all the different layers of the wood, and to learn where and how to fi nd them

MATERIALS:

I have never known a child to see a fallen tree without wanting to climb up on it and use it as a balance beam, a tightrope or a pirate’s plank. This is a pleasure that can’t be rushed. When we were out in the woods, I sat with a friend as our boys clambered along the trunk of a big, dead tree. When at last they were ready to move on, we rolled aside one piece of the tree that had broken off. The kids loved watching insects and other creatures scramble for cover, and they loved playing Sherlock Holmes with a magnifying glass, speculating about which creatures had made the different holes they found in the wood. WHAT’S BELOW?When you roll over a rotting log, you are likely to see an assortment of slow-moving pill bugs, sow bugs, slugs, snails and earthworms; and faster-moving daddy longlegs, millipedes, centipedes, crickets and click beetles. If you are lucky, you might spot bright-colored newts and salamanders as well. Your log also may host tiny seedlings, mosses and lichens, mushrooms and other fungi. The kids should be able to tell from the amount of plant and animal life whether the tree died only recently or a long time ago. Generally, the more life the log supports, the longer it has been in decay. Point out that the log encompasses the entire cycle of life: The dead tree provides food and a home for creatures and plants that, in turn, help it to decompose into soil from which new trees will grow. When you are done with your investigation, be sure to roll the log back where you found it. After all, as the kids said, how would you like it if some giant came along, tipped your house over on its side and left it like that? WHAT’S IN BETWEEN?There is one more way to roust forest insects from their hiding places--this time from among the leaves and debris that make up the litter layer on the forest’s fl oor. During your excursion, loosely fi ll a resealable bag with leaf litter, leaving the bag slightly open for air. At home, your kids can set up a device known as a berlese funnel to coax the insects from the litter. Place an open coffee fi lter in the bottom of a widemouthed jar and set a plastic funnel into the top. Pack the funnel with the leaf litter and place a high-intensity lamp directly over the funnel, with the bulb close to the leaves. As the lamp heats up, the insects will evacuate their hiding spots, dropping down through the funnel and into the cooler climate below. The fi lter paper in the bottom of the jar will help you to see the tiny creatures. When you are done, let the insects go outdoors.

Being active as a family can involve a huge range of fun experiences that make you feel good, improve your health and can be a great way to relax and enjoy new challenges.Trying new activities can be fun for all the family and research shows that children whose parents are active are more than fi ve times as likely to be active than those whose parents are not. So, with February half term just around the corner now is the perfect time to organise an outing for your whole family where you can spend some exciting quality time together. Why not consider doing something new and unusual; indoor climbing, karting, laser combat or rock climbing. All of these activities are bound to get your pulse racing

and you may even discover a new family hobby that you sign up to do on a regular basis. If your family prefers to stick to more familiar activities then you could consider planning a walk around your local area, a forest trail or something more adventurous in the countryside. You could alternatively plan a bike ride, arrange to go horse riding or go swimming at your local leisure centre. All of these are great ways of getting active and a lot of fun to do together.Make sure everyone in the family is encouraged to think of fun things to do to get you all up and moving. Getting your children involved is a great way to set them on the road to being active right through to adult hood.

When choosing a day nursery for your child, don’t rush into anything. There are some excellent nurseries out there but you should do some research as it is important to consider the needs of both you (the parents) and the child. A good starting point, when choosing a nursery, is to contact your local Children’s Information Service for a list of nurseries in your area or to ask local parents for recommendations. It is important to book a visit to the nurseries that you are considering. You will be able to see what the layout looks like, how happy the children and staff look, see if your child is comfortable in the environment and you can ask them questions. Here are some keys things that you may wish to check:

Choosing the right Nursery for your child• Nurseries usually run from 8:00am until 6:00pm all year round except for public holidays. Ask if they run later into the evening if required.• Does the nursery provide all of the meals or do you have to provide the food. If the nursery does provide them, what meals are they and where are they cooked?• What activities will your child be involved in during the day? You may wish to obtain a copy of their timetable. It would also be benefi cial to fi nd out about the staff’s meth-ods in orchestrating these activities.• Does the nursery have an outside space, as fresh air is important, and what are the facilities like?• What sort of settling in period is there?• What does the nursery do about security and people entering and leaving the building?• If you have a baby you need to enquire as to whether the nursery has a baby room and if so, what facilities are avail-able; nappies, formula, cots and sleeping arrangements, prams and outside activities.• Ask to see a copy of their latest OFSTED report.

Finding the right nursery can be a tense time, but when you do it is very rewarding. The key is the staff; they make the difference between a good nursery and a poor one.
