Hi all,
WOW! What wonderful weather we are having, I hope you are all enjoying it and playing outside??It is nearly the end of the school year and I am sure that you are all looking forward to moving up to your new classes and meeting your new teachers. Good luck to all of the year 6 children who will be moving onto secondary school and we all hope you have a great time and learn lots!Once again we have some superb competitions in HEY! Over the last 12 months, a local company has been developing a brand new concept in publishing in a niche of its own.

Basil gets up to all sorts of mischief in the classroom and also at lunchtimes.His parents keep forgetting to give him his own lunchbox although they have received several letters from the school, so he is best friends with anyone who has tuna for lunch. On this day Tori left her tuna pasta unattended and as Basil is very against waste, particularly of a fi shy kind, he thoughtfully helped to fi nish off the tuna pasta left in Tori’s fl ask.He couldn’t escape blame for this dastardly deed as instead of lining up for afternoon school with his classmates he was too busy cleaning away the evidence left on his paws.

St Pauls’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet celebrated Health Week from 17th to 21st May. Each day during the week, the children were extremely lucky to have the opportunity to purchase a mid morning drink of fruit juice. We were indebted to Tesco and the Co-op for their donations of juice which supported the children’s contributions. A great majority of the children participated, enjoying the more traditional orange plus more exotic ranges.As reported in last month’s edition of St. Paul’s People, the charity for this term is LEPRA which supports people with leprosy. On the fi nal Friday of Health Week, they had a fantastic day completing a workout in support of LEPRA. Children had collected sponsors and were thrilled to receive a tee-shirt and complete their workout. As a Church School, they are committed to supporting those less fortunate than themselves and were delighted to support this most worthwhile charity. The children raised a stunning £1.049.70 which will support 50 people with Leprosy, well done everyone, a superb effort!
Health Week
This year we were blessed with good weather for our Sports’ Days, which miraculously, for the fi rst time in four years, happened on the days scheduled for them. In Lower School, this took place on 17th May and in Upper School on the 18th. The format of small group sports plus more traditional running races was voted a resounding success by children, parents and staff. This format allowed all the children to take part for the majority of the morning with the elite runners enjoying their moments of glory too. The winning house, over the two days, was Faraday. We are really grateful to Mr. Greg Byrne who organised the event and all the staff who helped on the days.

Football SkillsThe children of St Paul’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet were so lucky on Wednesday 19th May, to receive soccer skills coaching from trained coaches from Arsenal Football Club. Another incredible event for them to enjoy, education certainly wasn’t as exciting as this when I was at school! The children thought it was ‘awesome’!

As part of our work with the Town Heritage Initiative, we were delighted to welcome a local stone carver, Tom Clark, who worked with the Year 5 classes. They are producing a set of 4 pieces for display in our quiet garden to commemorate the school’s 40th Anniversary. The pieces will feature the school and locality. The children had an amazing time helping to carving items for inclusion. We are so grateful to Tom and to Mrs. Karin Kennedy and Barbra Wharton of THI for their organisation.

Everyone at Ditcheat School is delighted with the results of our recent Ofsted inspection. The team spent two days in school and were very pleased with everything they saw. Our report was published last week and we are offi cially a good school in all areas with some things graded as outstanding. The inspectors commented in particular on the caring and welcoming ethos of the school and on the children’s “good attitudes to learning evident throughout the school”. The positive nature of this report refl ects the enthusiasm of the children, the hard work and commitment of the staff and the wonderful support we have from parents.

Our Outdoor Learning Week provided the children with some excellent opportunities to develop problem solving and team work skills. The children loved the “hands on” practical activities. “It was a pleasure to go into the hall at one point during the week to see every child in the school absorbed in making a clay model of themselves” said Headteacher, Beth Hopkin. Later in the day these were placed around the village to represent the work of the artist Anthony Gormley. The week culminated with a morning of raft building followed by raft racing on the local stream: a great way to learn about design, fl oating and sinking and forces.

Arts Council England has awarded Artsmark Gold to St John’s CE VA Primary School in recognition of the school’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education. St John’s is part of the 1676 schools in England who received an Artsmark award this year.Carolyn Banfi eld, Head teacher of St John’s CE VA Primary School in Midsomer Norton said: “I’m delighted that the Arts Council has once again recognised St John’s dynamic arts education programme. Because of the outstanding opportunities we are able to provide for our children, they are enthused and motivated by the arts in all its diversity. Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed working with a range of professional artists, dancers and musicians and as a result have achieved great things.’

On Monday 14th June, the juniors of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School took part in a fantastic Sing Up Concert at Wells Cathedral. Over the course of 6 weeks, the children had been taught 8 songs by one of the Wells choristers and the Wells Cathedral organist, Oliver Walker. The culmination of these singing lessons was the concert in which Farrington, along with 3 other primary schools, sang their hearts out! Sarah Appleton (YR 5) and Megan Oram (YR 4) – seen in the picture in their navy school uniforms – showed great talent, singing a verse from the African song Soualle as a duet.

High Littleton Tag Rugby SuccessHigh Littleton year 5and 6 tag rugby team took part in the Midsomer Norton Tag Rugby Tournament.The winners and runners up would take part in the Primary Rugby partnership Day at Bath Rugby’s Recreation Ground. Beating Camerton, St Nicholas, Westfi eld and Paulton whilst drawing with Peasedown St John, Trinity and Midsomer Norton meant that High Littleton were within one try of claiming the top spot.Our galliant efforts saw us achiving runner up position.The squad were Matt J, Matt W, Ali, Chloe, Maddie, Charlie, Emily, Ryan and Edward.

Longvernal MosiacsYear 4 and 5 children from Longvernal Primary School displayed their creativity when they were vistied by artist Anita Andrews. The pupils designed 2 fantastic mosaics inspired by their links with Spain and Uganda and also the community of the school.Children cut the tiles and worked with Anita to ensure they were placed correctly and the picture came to life. On Thursday 10th June, the infants of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School and St Mary’s Writhlington Church of England School went to Weston-super-Mare for a joint day of fun on the beach and a visit to Seaquarium. Both schools, who share Executive Headteacher Sue Jones, have been focussing on “The Caribbean” as their topic this term and what better way to do this than with a trip to the seaside! It may not have been quite as hot and tropical as in the Caribbean, but the children were not in the least deterred!

The Tag Rugby team of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School qualifi ed for the South West fi nals of the Tag to Twickenham Competition. This makes them one of the top 250 teams in the country! They recently played at Taunton School against teams from as far a fi eld as Redruth, Cheltenham and Gloucester. As a small school, playing some Year 4 pupils in this Year 6 competition, they were delighted with their excellent performance.

Our Year 3 play was called’ Just Like Us, ‘ and it was about children in World War 2.Some of us played English evacuees and some were Jewish. The play was about people being different and being able to get along with each other. We sang some lovely World War 2 songs and our parents and grandparents joined in.Some children from each class helped to serve tea and cakes after the morning performance. Westfield Year Westfield Year Last term during our Eco Club meeting we decided to take part in the ‘In Bloom’ competition to improve our local environment. On Monday 10th May we paid a visit to the local garden centre in Chilcompton to buy a variety of plants. We followed the council’s theme of ‘fi re’ and chose plants in colours of red, yellow, blue and orange. We spent the whole morning planting over six pots. It was very hard work but after we fi nished it was worth it. We hope the judges will come and pay us a visit next month as we are very proud of our work.By Courtney Burns and Rebecca Cleaves

with teeth in the sand- use your fi nger or a stick. The sharks head can be made bigger to make the game easier, or smaller to make it harder.
2. Draw a line in the sand about fi ve big steps away from the shark. Everyone stands behind this line to play.
3. Take turns trying to throw a pebble or shell into the shark’s mouth. If you manage to do this, you get two points. If your pebble lands on the shark (but notin the mouth) you get one point. You don’t get any points if it lands anywhere else!
4. The fi rst person to reach ten points wins!

Materials • 2 cardboard tubes (toilet paper tubes, or wrapping paper tubes trimmed to about 5-1/2 inches) • 1 roll each of red, white, and blue duct tape • Clear 1-gallon, food-safe plastic pot• 2 (15-ounce) unopened cans of food, with labels removed (for weight) • Clean, empty metal can or plastic bucket (ours is a 12-ounce peanut can) • Parchment paper (optional) • 2 metal bottle caps
Instructions 1. Wrap the cardboard tubes with red and white duct tape. Affi x an arm to each side of the potl with a loop of tape.2. Wrap the bottom of the canned goods with red tape. (Tip: Write the contents on the top of each can so that you’ll know what’s in them.) Place loops of tape on their lids, then press the potl into place on top. 3. To make the robot’s head, wrap the empty can or bucket with blue duct tape. Cut eyes from white duct tape and a mouth from red. (Tip: The eyes and mouth are easier to make if you fi rst attach the duct tape to a piece of parchment paper. Cut out the shapes, then peel them off the parchment backing.) Attach the bottle caps to the white circles with loops of tape. Stack the head on top of the pot.

This take on a classic camp craft inspires your family members to create versions of themselves with natural treasures from your own garden.
Materials • Sticks and twigs • Hand pruners (a parent’s tool) • Hot-glue gun • Flat stone • Colored pencils • Small objects from nature, such as pinecones, pine needles, pieces of bark, acorns, and leaves • 8-inch piece of twine (optional)
Instructions 1. Trim the sticks with the pruners and hot-glue them together to form a body with arms, a torso, and legs.2. Draw a face on the stone with colored pencils, then glue it to the torso. 3. Glue on the other features, such as pinecone feet, an acorn cap, bark pants, or a pine needle skirt.

These totally tossable, squishable balls are lightweight and easy to grip, making them perfect for novice jugglers, beanbag games, or a good old game of catch.
Materials • 9 (11-inch) balloons (for 3 balls) • Funnel • 2 1/4 cups of dried lentils • Scissors
Instructions 1. Stretch the fi rst balloon by infl ating it halfway, holding it closed for about 30 seconds, and defl ating it.2. Place a funnel in the balloon’s neck and gradually pour in 3/4 cup of lentils, pushing them in as you go. The balloon should be fi rm but squeezable.3. Snip off the balloon’s thick rubber lip. Cut the neck off a second balloon and gently stretch the opening.4. Ease the second balloon over the fi lled balloon, tucking in the neck as you go.5. Cut the neck off the third balloon, stretch the opening, and ease it over the other two. Repeat this process to make a set of three balls, or however many you’d like.

Riverford teamed up with Hey! Magazine’s Tina Veater who hosted an ‘al fresco’ Cook and Chat lunch in her sunny garden in Radstock this month. Tina invited ten friends to her home and Riverford cook Jude Davies prepared the guests a mouthwatering range of dishes using seasonal organic vegetables and fruit. On the menu; potato and spinach frittata, orange and caraway dip with feta cheese, blood salad followed by vanilla Panna Cotta and spiced rhubarb. Liz McPherson of Riverford explains “We are inviting people to host these Cook and Chat lunches or suppers to encourage them and their friends to look again at organic vegetables as versatile, reasonably priced ingredients and a great basis for tasty, healthy home-cooking for the whole family. You invite friends to your home, we provide the cook and the ingredients.”
All of Jude’s recipes were quick to prepare, a bonus for the guests with school-aged children who agreed that the Frittata (rather like a Spanish omelette) would be a hit with younger members of the family. Simply by adding favourite ingredients like bacon, ham or cheese it makes a tasty, healthy tea-time dish for those rushing to prepare something after school.
In the spirit of Riverford guests were encouraged to chat to Jude about their own cooking experiences and gained inspiration for using vegetables in a creative way for the whole family. Everybody enjoyed the results when they sat down to lunch!

Create the catchers by cutting the bottom off a gallon-size milk jug (one for each player), taping the cut edges, and decorating with ribbon.2. Fill a bunch of water balloons to the size of a grapefruit.3. See how many times you can toss the balloons without breaking them or how far you can catch and throw them.
Splash and ScoreKids can test their aim and douse their opponent at the same time with this water balloon game of throwing and blocking skills. What You Need • 1 bucket and 1 plastic bat for every 2 players • 6 water balloons per player (for each game) Instructions 1. Fill the buckets to the brim and line them up. Divide into 2 teams (throwers and receivers). The throwers line up several yards away from the buckets and try to toss water balloons into the buckets. 2. Each successful toss is worth 1 point. Each member of the receiving team sits (or kneels) behind a bucket and holds a plastic bat ready to defend his or her bucket by blocking the incoming water balloons. Be sure the buckets are far enough apart that batters won’t hit each other. 3. Each thrower tosses 2 balloons, the score is tallied, and then the receivers get a chance to be the throwers and earn points. The teams continue to alternate throwing and blocking. The team with the highest score at the end of 3 rounds wins.

With cup in hand, each player jumps into the turning rope and completes 3 skips in a row. The player with the most water in her cup after her turn wins. (6 or more players)Divide players into 2 teams and give each team a cup of water. One team turns the rope. The other sends a player into the turning rope with the cup, singing, “Water in the cup, splashing all about. Jump in, (teammate’s name), and help me out.” This teammate jumps in and takes the cup from the fi rst player, who then jumps out. After each player has jumped once, the other team has a turn. Think carefully. Who is your harshest critic? Your overinvolved mother? That competitive friend? Perhaps an annoying in-law? Chances are the person who gives you the hardest time is YOU.After all, who’s the one spending time and energy in front of the mirror worrying about your new haircut? Who is it beating themselves up when a project isn’t going right at work or after an argument with a friend or family member? Most of us put far too much of our energy in to negative thoughts, often affecting the way we live our lives or leading to mental or physical health problems.Issues with our bodies and personalities can continue for years, if not a lifetime. When did you first start thinking that you weren’t a confident speaker, your thighs were too fat or your chest was too sunken? Millions of people suffer with serious disorders such as depression, social anxiety or body dysmorphia, extreme mental conditions that cause debilitating fears and anxieties, which stop the sufferer from functioning normally in their day-to-day life. These are people who fear answering a ringing phone, are terrified of social rejection, who look in the mirror and see something hideous, who can’t face getting out of bed in the morning. But these conditions can be treated with drugs and counselling, every day anxieties and worries can’t.It’s all too easy to say to a worried friend having a hard time “it’s not that bad,” or “I don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re fantastic!” But few of us give ourselves the same courtesy. Speak to a close friend who you know will be honest with you and ask them about your worries. Chances are they’ve never noticed that your stomach bulges in tight tops or that you blush whenever you speak to a member of the opposite sex. Ask them what their worries are and even if you have noticed that their hair is a bit bushy or that they talk before they think you’ve probably wished you had their lovely curls or that you find their foot-in-mouth problem quite endearing.So next time you find yourself criticising the way you look or something you have (or haven’t) done put yourself in your best friend’s shoes. What would they say to you? If you can start looking at yourself from the outside, seeing what others can see, you’re well on the way to pushing those nagging doubts and self criticisms away for good. Write down everything you dislike about yourself, read it back or – even better – ask someone to read it out to you. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Stop the cycle of negative thinking and you may have just saved your own sanity or even your life.

Instructions 1. After they’ve gathered a small bucketful, have your young artists wash the rocks, then paint them with outdoor acrylic paint.2. When the paint is dry, kids can stack, sort, and design to their hearts’ content. Our testers made pyramids, circles in the grass, paths, and more. A bonus: your kids can continue to add to the collection as more rocks turn up.

Materials • 15 to 20 small items such as a paper clip, a seashell, a shiny bead, or a googly eye • Clear plastic jar with the label removed (we used a peanut butter jar) • Pen, paper, and scissors • Mixed birdseed (we used about 1
cup) • Clear packing tape
Instructions 1. Let your child gather a handful of tiny
‘treasures’ from around the house.2. Trace the lid of the jar onto paper and cut
out the circle. On it, list all of the items your child’s collected so players will
know what to look for. (Or, print the list from your computer.)3. Pour about an inch of birdseed into the jar, then drop in 3 or 4 of the small items. Add some more birdseed, then more treasures, and so on until you’re within an inch of the top. Leave that final space empty so the contents will have room to move around when shaken.
Screw on the lid.4. Tape the list of items to the lid and
seal the jar shut with more tape. Give it a good shake, and see what you can find.

Rhubarb and strawberry crumble
1. Pre-heat the oven 180C/350F/Gas 4.2. To make the roux, in a medium saucepan melt the butter and add the fl our, mix for one minute and add the mustard and chopped leek.3. Gradually add the milk to form a thick sauce.4. Add in the egg yolks and stir and season with salt and freshly ground pepper.5. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until stiff.6. Fold the egg whites into the roux mixture.7. Place the mixture in a medium-sized ovenproof saucepan. Sprinkle with the smoked fi sh, cheese and parsley.8. Place into the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes and cook until golden brown.9. Serve hot.

Penne with broad beans, bacon, mint and cream

Ingredients
500g shelled broad beans350g penne100g pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, cut into fi ne batons1 tbsp butter or olive oil1 garlic clove, crushed200ml double creama small bunch of mint, roughly chopped2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesansea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until tender. Drain and set aside.Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water until al dente. Meanwhile, fry the bacon in the butter or oil until just beginning to brown, then add the garlic and stir for a minute without letting it colour. Stir in the cream, mint and broad beans and simmer for a few minutes. Then add the Parmesan and season to taste.When the pasta is done, drain well, toss with the sauce and serve immediately.

Ingredients
2-4 rhubarb stalks, cut into slices 2cm thick1 punnet strawberries, hulls removed, large ones cut in half165g plain fl our50g soft light brown sugar150g rolled oats125g unsalted butter
Place the rhubarb in a deep pie dish. Toss the strawberries with a tablespoon of the fl our and add to the rhubarb. Sprinkle half the sugar on top. Put the oats, butter and remaining sugar and fl our in a food processor and pulse until the mixture starts to come together. Spread the crumble over the fruit and bake in an oven preheated to 180C for 35-40 minutes, until the rhubarb is tender and the crumble is browned. Serve with clotted cream.

When children have mastered behaving during the meal itself, a family can venture out to the more family friendly restaurants that have table service. One good way to tell a family friendly restaurant from others is that they will provide high chairs and booster seats, and they have a children’s menu. You should be at the restaurant a little before the child’s regular dinnertime so that they will not be starving before the food arrives. Regardless of how a restaurant may seem, if the service is slow by adult standards, you will be miserable, so opt out of those places.
You will want to pack a bag of quiet toys, colouring books and crayons, but these distractions may wear out. One hint for packing toys for a truly critical experience for the child is to pack new or unfamiliar toys. They will be more entertained by something they have never seen, if you have chosen well. It is good to always have a few of these types of toys hidden away for this purpose. Packing snacks has dubious value. If the child eats before their real dinner comes, they will still need to wait while everyone else eats.
Sometimes if the waiting gets too hard it is helpful for an adult to take the child to the lobby or outdoors for a few minutes for a change of scene. You will need to use this method judiciously because you do not want to be disturbing other diners by walking past their tables frequently. You also do not want to give your child the impression that wandering around the restaurant is acceptable behaviour, because it is not.
Be certain to remember all your good table manners in the restaurant. Just because someone else is doing the cleaning up is no excuse to play with the food or leave a mess. Be polite to your server, and leave a generous tip if they have tried to accommodate the extra demands of your family.

GIVE IT A TRYThis simple activity shows how easy it is to grow and care for your own mini-garden. Once you’ve experimented with one type of sprout, try another and observe the differences. Label each new jar and you’ll soon have a cupboard full of fresh herbs and spices.

Line the inside of the jar or glass with several layers of paper towels. Spray the towels with a light mist of water. Place the seeds between the towels and the glass, halfway down. Spray the towels with water several times a day to keep them moist.
Observe the growth of the seeds. Measure the lengths of the roots. Draw pictures of the seedling plants each week. Keep a record in a science log or plain notebook. Then begin a second sprout jar and place it in a dark area. Compare and observe the growth of the new seedlings to the growth of the ones in the first jar.

The sound machine game is a fun activity for a group. For this game, it’s just as much fun to watch the light reflect on the wall as it is to speak into the sound machine. Take turns being the observer as well as the sound maker.

Remove both ends of the can (an adult should do this). Be sure that there are no sharp edges left on the can. Stretch the balloon by blowing it up several times (an adult should do this). Cut a large section from the balloon. Stretch the balloon section over one end of the can, using the elastic band to hold it in place. Glue the small piece of mirror onto the balloon, slightly off-centre.
Use a sunny room that has a shaded wall next to the window. Hold the can so that the sunlight is reflected from the mirror onto the wall. Speak into the open end of the can. Watch the reflection on the wall move. Experiment with sound by speaking in a lower-pitched voice and then a higher-pitched one. Or try singing into the sound machine. Notice how the light moves. As your voice changes, how does the reflection on the wall change?

Make sure an adult is supervising at all times.Cut off the top of the milk carton. Place sand inside to weight it down. Punch a small hole in the exact centre of one side of the milk carton near the top. Punch a hole at the exact centre of the cardboard strip. Then punch a hole at each end of the strip the same distance from the centre. Attach the cardboard strip to the carton with the tack. Punch two holes through the top of each cup. Attach the cups to the strip of cardboard with string. Make sure the cups hang evenly.
Experiment to find two different objects that have the same weight according to the balance. Put buttons in one cup and marbles in another. Keep adding, one at a time, until the cups balance.

The leg bones of a bat are so

The beluga whale is also known as the sea canary because of the chirps, squeaks and clicking noises that it makes. These sounds can be heard from
boats. Another name is white whale. Its white
colour helps it blend in with the icy surroundings.
Belugas are often covered in scars. These are
usually caused by polar bears, which attack the
whales if they become trapped in pack ice.

The gila monster is the biggest lizard in the USA. It can be pink, yellow or orange but always with black bands. The bright colours warn predators off. It is properly active only for three months in spring. It hibernates in winter and spends the rest of the time underground. To avoid the hot desert sun it does most of its business in the morning and late afternoon.

The red fox is one of the most adaptable animals. It can live almost anywhere in the northern hemisphere and can eat almost anything.
It is the UK’s most common predator and the most
common dog in the world. The fox loves living in
towns and cities. It’s thought that half of an urban
fox’s diet is made up of our leftovers. Because it’s
so successful in real life, in stories the fox is often
sly and cunning. If you want to see one, the best
time is at dusk or during the night.
RED FOX
The jellyfi sh has no heart, blood, brain or gills, and it’s see-through. In fact 95% of a jellyfi sh is water. It moves about by using special muscles which draw water into the bell and then shoot it out again – a bit like a jet ski. Most jellies trap food using their tentacles. The lion’s mane jellyfi sh has tentacles which can reach 30m. Jellyfi sh stings are caused by cells called nematocystes which shoot out like miniature harpoons into their prey.

threatened, the Cape porcupine raises

MOON BEAR The Asiatic black bear is also called the moon bear because of the cream-coloured crescent moon
shape on its chest. Even though it is quite bulky, it spends up to half its time in trees, either eating or sleeping. It has a very good sense of smell. It’s thought a bear can smell honey 5km away. A varied diet means it can snack on fruit, vegetables, nuts, insects, small mammals and birds.
