Updated Return to School Guidelines

Late this week, schools were provided with updated advice about various aspects of operation. Although some of the current restrictions in place within schools will soon be relaxed, at North Kellyville Public School we will maintain our status quo until the end of term. This means that for the next three weeks, advice contained within this previous communication from 25 May remains current. In Term 3 we will be able to slowly re-introduce some extra curricular activity groups, Sports in Schools Australia and other ‘incursions’. We have been highly successful in our implementation of safety protocols since students returned to school full time on 25 May. Students still wash their hands regularly with soap and water and the Department of Education’s enhanced cleaning program is being maintained. Thank you to our students’ parents and carers who have adapted well to new drop off and pick up routines. We have been advised that the current drop off and pick up procedures will continue into Term 3 and that parents and visitors will still have restricted access to the site. How to use Kiss & Drop

Are you perplexed as to how kiss and drop works? In recent newsletters I have tried to communicate the simple steps used to ensure students can be safely picked up from Hezlett Road of an afternoon. While there has been an overall improvement of motorist behaviour, this week I have sought to take my messaging to a new level and produce something of an instructional video. Amateurish as it might be, this video will hopefully help explain some of the nuances of using kiss and drop successfully.

Student Reports – Semester 1

Student reports will be issued on the final day of term, Friday 3 July. I have received some enquiries as to why teachers cannot allocate grades to students on the standard 5-point scale for this reporting period. Put simply, after initial start-of-year settling activities, teachers had about 5 weeks with students before students were asked not to attend school by the Premier. Students were supported at home to varying degrees while learning remotely and programs were modified in accordance with Departmental advice. Upon resuming school on 25 May, it has been our relentless focus to TEACH students vigorously rather than to assess them vigorously. Reports will contain brief commentary about areas of achievement and areas for growth. Semester 2 reports will revert to the usual style where grades are awarded for students.

‘Data Talks’

An internal practice that the school has developed over time is that of ‘data talks’ whereby classroom teachers meet with the Learning and Support Team to review the progress of students and discuss ways to more deeply engage learners of all kinds across the curriculum. This week all teachers participated in these talks. As school principal, I was heartened, enlightened, and inspired to hear how well our teaching staff know the students in their care and their evolving plans to adequately challenge students. I want to publicly acknowledge our teachers for their breadth of knowledge and professionalism in engaging with this process.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

• year of schooling

• category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional

• level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

• formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

• consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

• develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal. If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact Mrs Ingleton who is the school’s Learning and Support Teacher.

Public Libraries

Following the easing of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic Castle Hill Library and Vinegar Hill Memorial Library at Rouse Hill are now open offering reduced services. Strict procedures are still in place to limit any potential spread of COVID-19. The Libraries are open solely for customers to borrow and return items. At this stage only children with their parent or carer may enter the Library to borrow or return items. Details relating to services and opening hours are available on the Hills Council website. Parents Please Keep a Distance

Parents and carers are reminded to keep a safe distance from one another at drop off and pick up times. We also kindly request that as soon as parents or carers have picked up students, that they leave the site immediately and do not linger having conversations. Teachers are unable to conduct interviews, however brief, on site in accordance with guidance from the NSW Department of Education.

Lost Property

Thousands upon thousands of dollars of lost property sits waiting collection at the school. Did you know that:

• Items which are NAMED have a 90%+ chance of being returned to the rightful owner.

• Items which are NOT NAMED have a 0% chance of being returned to their rightful owner.

Please ensure that your child’s possessions are labelled clearly with your child’s name and that you check labels regularly to ensure that the name is still visible. No less than weekly, named items are being returned to students. Items which are not named will be used as emergency clothing in our sick bay or donated to a P&C clothing pool which we hope to form in the near future. No Birthday Cakes

Students who celebrate birthdays and would like to bring treats for classmates are asked not to bring cakes. In cases where cakes are brought to school, they will not be distributed to children. This is again a common sense approach to minimising risk of infection. An individually wrapped and commercially produced alternative, such as fun sized confectionary bars are permissible. New Details? Let us Know!

Thank you to the many families who have returned amended contact information from notices which were sent home recently. It is critically important that the information we hold on our databases about family contact details is accurate. If not already done, parents are kindly asked to review the information, amend any errors that might appear, and return the sheet to school as soon as possible. Sheets can be returned over the counter by students or by email to [email protected]. Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association Meeting

The P&C’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 17 June at 7:30pm in the school hall. This meeting will adhere to all distancing and non-contact requirements. The key purposes of the Annual General Meeting are to elect a new executive committee, reflect on success and challenging of the previous year, and consider the Association’s financial position. I warmly welcome any parents / carers who are considering attending the P&C forum for the first time, and especially encourage those who might be contemplating nominating for president, vice president, secretary, treasurer or general member of the executive to do so. A strong and active P&C often makes the difference between a good school and a great school. For more information about the roles of P&C executive members, see our website here.

Attendance Meter

Attendance at school in New South Wales is mandatory, though when sick, students should stay at home. We have identified student attendance as an area of concern and seek the support of parents and carers to arrest negative data, encourage positive attendance and attitudes to school. Non-attendance leads to compromised learning outcomes for students. Each fortnight I will publish our attendance rates, and hope to see them steadily improve. We will be following Department of Education policy in following up non-attendance without good reason which includes referring cases of concern to the Home School Liaison Program. This fortnight’s attendance statistics are trending: UPWARDS! Well done North Kellyville community!

Uniform Reminder

One of the great things about North Kellyville PS is our uniform. It is a real highlight that stands out amongst the wider community. This is a friendly reminder that students must remember to always wear the correct uniform. This includes hats and jackets. We ask parents & carers to support us in ensuring students are in correct uniform each day. Our lost property has grown to quite a significant collection. Whilst parents & carers are not currently permitted on site to sift through it, it is crucial that student uniforms are clearly labelled. Teachers are regularly going through it and returning any item that is clearly labelled. Luke Hogan Deputy Principal

2/1P Spelling Superstars

This week 2/1P students have been working hard on their spelling words. We have learnt our words through many activities such as cutting out and sorting, reciting to a partner and writing onto our spelling wall. We are really becoming… Spelling Superstars!!

Issue 4 ordering CLOSES TODAY – Friday 12th June. Student orders should be received sometime next week. Thanks to the families who have made purchases – every purchase supports our library! A reminder that all orders must be placed using Scholastic’s LOOP system – this can be done online or via the app. NO cash orders can be accepted. Thank you for your cooperation. Premier’s Reading Challenge

Our first batch of READING HEROES have emerged! Congratulations to the following students on their recent completion of the Challenge: K-2 Challenge 3-4 Challenge 5-6 Challenge Ismaeel A. Aryan B. Harnoor A. Abbie A. Sean H. Dhruv B. Dhwiti J. Darian K. Summer P. Emmet A. Munif R. Jibraeel A. Will R. Angad S. Abhineet S.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has adapted its rules for 2020 to ensure no student is disadvantaged and can still complete the Challenge this year. Students are able to include more personal choice books to their record and include books read collaboratively. Please go to the website for more information. It is now critical for ALL K-2 parents to keep track of their child’s reading records. I can no longer guarantee that I can add enough books to their reading records, due to the fact that we have lost such a significant period of time where we could be sharing and reading books in the library and in classrooms. I have included a video tutorial that guides you through the process of adding books to your child’s reading record. Borrowing

Due to the strict hygiene controls that the Department of Education has in place for school libraries, our students are currently unable to browse or borrow books from our library at the moment. Please keep returning any books that are still at home though. Hopefully we will be able to get back into regular library operations very soon.

North Kellyville Public School Library

Hezlett Road, North Kellyville NSW 2155 | P: 88011911 | E: [email protected]

North Kellyville Public School students in K-2 complete the Challenge through sharing books

with the teacher librarian, their Blue Hub teachers and home room teacher. Their reading

records are administered at school by the PRC coordinator, Ms Whelan, the teacher librarian.

Years 3-6 students are encouraged to participate in the Challenge but must complete their

reading records independently. Assistance is available if needed - students should consult

their home class teacher or the teacher librarian, Ms Whelan. It is recommended that students

access the PRC website via their student portal.

The following information for parents/caregivers comes directly from the Premier’s Reading Challenge website. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is managed and administered by the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit.

Tips for parents/caregivers:

9 Familiarise yourself with the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you

can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to a Student Reading Record

(SRR).

9 Visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge Support website. It allows you to search for information about the

PRC and how to use the PRC website and also how to contact the PRC team.

9 Set reminders for Challenge opening and closing dates in your and your child’s calendar.

9 Find out your child’s logon details. For public schools, students’ logon will be the same one they use to

access computers and the internet at school.

9 Assist your child to borrow books from the school or local library. Listen to your child read and talk about

the story/ characters/ information. Read to or with your child if she/he is participating in the K-2 Challenge.

9 Help your child to add books to her/his Student Reading Record regularly.

9 Follow the Arts Unit on Facebook and the NSW PRC on Instagram to keep up to date about information

about the Challenge throughout the year. We regularly run contests and Author events your child may be

interested in taking part in.

9 Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if:

o Your child has any difficulty using her/his logon details to access the PRC website.

o You are concerned that your child’s name is spelt incorrectly in the PRC website.

Important notes:

If you need to check your child’s Challenge history, please contact your child’s PRC coordinator.

Your child’s online Student Reading Record must have the required number of books recorded to complete the

Challenge by the student closing date. School PRC coordinators have an extra two weeks to validate the SRR.

Only students with a validated SRR are eligible for a certificate.

In the final weeks of the Challenge, log on regularly to the website to check the status of your child’s

SRR. Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if you are concerned your child’s SRR has not been validated.

National Tree Day

Dear Parents, National Schools Tree Day is on July 31st.

It started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Each year over 3,000 preschools, kindergartens, primary and high schools across Australia participate in Schools Tree Day to plant seedlings and restore thousands of hectares of unique Australian landscape. Over 25 million trees have been planted by more than 4 million people, and this number continues to grow with the help of dedicated volunteers around the country. Unfortunately, this is not possible at present.

So as we spend more time indoors and many of us have been thinking about how we can

use this time and keep our children entertained, the Tree Day team from the Planet Ark

organisation have been thinking the same.

They have organised activity sheets in the toolkit for young students

A competition for the under 18’s

And ideas on how to connect with nature from your own backyard or balcony.

If you have any ideas you would like to share please get in touch at [email protected] so they can share with the community.

If you are interested please share your photos with @nationaltreeday on

Facebook and Instagram.

Are you growing something in your garden? On your balcony? Show them your house plants!

Whatever it is they want to see how you connect with nature.

Use the hashtag #connectwithnature and they will reshare with the Tree Day community. If your child would like to enter, please encourage your child and follow the links.
