Congratulations Hunter! Hunter of Year 5 is our first student to be selected in a Ridges PSSA zone team. He was successful yesterday in being chosen for the Ridges basketball team. Hunter will join team mates from around the zone in competing at the Sydney West carnival later this term.

Video Depository The school’s website now features links to various videos that have been produced as part of the school’s opening. This page will be updated regularly, particularly as our student film-crew is formed and they start making videos. Please visit the video page now to see:

• Animated fly through • School tour • First day of school • Smoking ceremony & welcome to country • Woolworths tour

Scripture & Ethics Volunteers Needed The school is still searching for volunteers to teach Hindu scripture. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer teacher for Hindu scripture, please contact me via email ([email protected]). Additionally, we are seeking volunteer parents to coordinate and teach Special Education in Ethics (SEE). We cannot commence Ethics classes until volunteers have been identified and trained. Morning Bell Song Choice Congratulations to 4/3B and Miss Brighton for being selected to choose next week’s song. We can’t wait to find out what they will choose!

School Culture, Diversity & Inclusivity I am immensely proud to be the principal of North Kellyville Public School – a school characterised by a strong understanding and application of the principles of inclusion, respect and diversity. A handful of parents have asked me about media articles during the week featuring a very rare and isolated instance in a local public school where these principles were not demonstrated. There is little more that can be said other than to echo the sentiments of our Education Minister who gave assurance that all students, in all schools should be safe and happy whilst at school. I respectfully ask parents to contact me directly if they have any questions or concerns about this matter. Principal Visitors As you might imagine, there is significant interest in North Kellyville Public School and our innovative learning environments from principal colleagues of mine. This week principals from two schools visited and made the following written observations following their visits: “Your students looked so settled in class and the school had a really positive, welcoming feel.” “The enthusiasm is catching!” Woolworths Fresh Food Discovery Tour Some of our Year 2 students enjoyed taking part in a Woolworths Fresh Food Discovery tour on Monday afternoon. The session was designed to educate students about healthy eating and food preparation and supports the school’s Crunch ‘n’ Sip program. Unfortunately we could not take all students in Year 2 due to strict limits. Watch the video on our website to see the special guest tour host! * PARENT WARNING – MOMO * For parents whose children access social media, video games, YouTube and the like, please read these alarming stories below. This information in ‘FYI only’. Students do not access the Internet at school unless supervised by staff members.

Assembly Awards & Ongoing Invitation Thursday will be our whole school assembly day. Assemblies will commence at 2:00pm and parents are more than welcome to attend. Yesterday’s assembly was a trial-run, enabling students to learn routines. We handed out our first set of DREAM BIG awards too. Congratulations to the following students:

School Contributions – School Bytes On Friday next week we will send home (via email), school payment contribution notices. We will be using a third party called ‘SchoolBytes’ which makes receiving notices and making payments significantly easier for parents and the school. The NSW Department of Education approved third party provider ‘SchoolBytes’, enables us to send invoices direct to parent email inboxes in bulk and easily correspond with reminders when payments become due or overdue. As SchoolBytes is a third party provider, parents have the opportunity to opt out of their information being provided. Information provided to SchoolBytes will be the minimum information required to operate the system including names of parents, students and email addresses. SchoolBytes does not process transactions directly; it acts as an invoicing service only and is integrated with the secure Westpac online portal. Please email [email protected] if you would like to opt out of using SchoolBytes. Parking Conditions on Hezlett Road Please park legally at all times, not blocking intersections or in No Stopping areas as Hills Council Compliance Officers and the Police provide enforcement around schools. Fines and demerit points apply. We are pleased to see ‘parallel parking only’ signs erected opposite the school. This has improved pedestrian safety significantly.

Parent Surveys – School Plan & Core Values In the next month the school leadership team will write a strategic School Plan for 2019-2020. As part of our consultation processes, all parents/carers are invited to complete this brief survey which will guide the drafting process.

Important Uniform Survey – Closes Monday! Parents are asked to complete this important survey about school uniform. We will use it to guide future decisions about our uniform. Get to Know us! In the next few editions of Hezlett Happenings we will include some staff biographies. I hope that this helps you connect with our team. This week, get to know Mr Janes and Miss Hook! Ridges Zone Swimming Carnival On Wednesday, 10 students held the historic honour of representing North Kellyville Public School at a zone carnival for the very first time. All of our competitors showed fantastic spirit and pride while debuting our orange swimming caps. Although our students were unsuccessful in moving on to the next level of competition all swimmers swam very well and some even won their heats! A special thank you must go to Lee Marshall who kindly volunteered her time to help manage our swimming team at the carnival and all the parents who were able to come and support our swimmers and provide transport to and from the venue. Swimming Records Based on the results of our school swimming carnival back in week 2, we now have students to can proudly say they hold a school record in certain events. These records allow us to remember the achievements of students throughout the years while giving other students goals to strive for. Andy Southwell & Caitlin Thomas Sports Coordinators 1 March 2019

Download School Stream Now! Please download School Stream from the Google Play or App Store to start receiving push notification reminders from the school and to enjoy the benefits and ease of app-based technology. Via this app, parents can:

• Complete absence notifications • Complete permission notes (currently

information is provided about our Moving Bodies gymnastics program)

• View information pertinent to their child’s grade or class

The app has some degree of configurability, so if you have suggestions on how we can improve its usage or impact, please let us know. Parent Volunteers North Kellyville Public School will be a place where all parents are valued and where their time and efforts in volunteering are welcomed and acknowledged. Please understand that various working with children checks must occur before we can permit parents to volunteer within the school and so I ask parents to wait until the first month of school has passed before we initiate volunteer procedures. This will allow time for students and classes to settle. I will advise in future newsletters of the procedures to become an accredited parent volunteer.

GET TO KNOW US

Get to Know Kieran Janes!

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself… I got engaged at the beginning of the year to my girlfriend of 8 years. I love football and water-polo. During school I played for NSW in futsal. I go for Chelsea football club because they are the best club in the known universe. I love being active and spend as much time at the beach as I can. I also love travelling and have been to all continents besides Antarctica and I have a dog called Frankie. Question 2: Why did you become a teacher? I originally didn’t want to be a teacher however, knew I wanted to work with children. I completed half a degree in occupational therapy before realising that I wanted to become a teacher. I love coming to school and learning about the lives of the student I teach whilst trying to positively contribute to their lives. Question 3: What is your favourite subject/concept to teach and why? I really like to teach English and PDHPE. I think it is important that students are

active and engaged in their learning. PDHPE is great because it allows students to express themselves and have fun in doing so, it also allows me to get outside and play! English is great also because it allows for creative expression and I love stories. Question 4: If you could have a super power what would it be and why? I have thought about this many times and I would definitely teleport. Teleporting would be great because it would allow me to sleep in for longer before school starts and I would also be able to travel anywhere in the world!! Question 5: Share one interesting fact about you? When I was studying I worked at the movies. When working at the movies I saw 48 movies in one year! I didn’t have to pay for tickets so I went with my brother and fiancé every week (sometimes twice a week). My favourite movie is Batman Begins.

4/3J Get Creative! Before development of North Kellyville Public School started, 232 Eastern Longneck Turtles were found across 2 ponds. These turtles have since been relocated and our art is a tribute to the turtles that once lived here.

Get to Know Colleen Hook!

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself… I am the class teacher of 2/1H. My favourite colour is purple and one of my favourite TV shows is Survivior. I enjoy watching the contestants Outwit, Outplay and Outlast. In my spare time I enjoy reading and shopping. You will probably see me at Castle Towers or Rouse Hill Town Centre on the weekends or in the holidays. My favourite holiday destination is Noosa. Oops! I almost forgot to mention my love of chocolate! Question 2: Why did you become a teacher? I have always enjoyed school and have a love of life-long learning which I hope to instill in all of my students. It is a wonderful privilege to be part of the learning journey of each student in my class and celebrate their accomplishments.

Question 3: What is your favourite subject/concept to teach and why? It is hard to pick a favourite subject because I like them all, but, I think Mathematics is my absolute favourite. I enjoy teaching all the different stands and getting to use lots of practical equipment to solve everyday problems. Question 4: If you could have a super power what would it be and why? I think teaching is my main superpower! If I could have another one it would be teleportation. No more parking issues! Question 5: Share one interesting fact about you? I am ambidextrous and can participate in some sports like softball, archery, bowling and cricket both left and right-handed.

2/1H Gets Physical! In 2/1H we have been enthusiastically participating in our Moving Bodies sessions in the hall. We are learning special techniques for taking off, jumping and landing correctly. The ribbons gave us a bit of trouble this week but everyone was having fun getting untangled. We are also mastering our log and egg rolls.
