    Eco-Friendly Furniture: an Introduction (2013-10-15 11:52) - HFR

Since the 1990s where mutterings of global warming and climate change had become increasingly talkedabout, people have been looking for any way in which they can help the environment. From energy savinglight bulbsto compost heaps at the bottom of the garden, there is almost an endless amount ofways to carefor the planet through everyday objects and processes, so why should furniture be any different?

    Origins of Eco-friendly Furniture

The first real signs of recycling materials for craftsmanship came from the early part of the 20 th Centurywhere the famous artist Pablo Picasso (below) began to create collages from old newspapers and other usedmaterials. This theme of recycled materials has grown significantly up to 2013 with whole wardrobes anddressers being crafted from used materials as well as being significantly better for the environment.

Ranging from reclaimed wood such as timber and pineto bamboo and metal, there are plentyofeco-friendlyresourcesto make a widerange ofproducts. An example would be the[3]Amerlin Recycled Boatwood CoffeeTable with Shelf (pictured below) which is constructed from 100 % reclaimed materials. The frame is puttogether with reclaimed steel that has been slightly brushed whilst the main body is recycled hardwood, mainly from old fishing boats.

    [4]

When looking at eco-friendly or green furniture it is important to make sure the wood is actually re-cycled and if not it is best to look for products crafted from bamboo as this is not a threatened wood andthereis an abundance of iton planet earth. It is alsoimportant tolook atwheretheitem has been producedand where the materials are from. The most environmentally friendly products are those whose materialshave been sourcedlocally, however some of the most charming pieces ofeco-friendly furniture are unique dueto the exotic wood that is used, making them better for the environment than a general brand new piece ofoak furniture.

One more tip I will leave you with is to always try and keep old furniture, especially if it can be dis-assembled easily and each material separated. This is because it looks like eco-friendly furniture has earnedits right to stay topical and popular in the foreseeable future due to its character, durability and needless tosay, its environmentally friendly aspect.

New England Furniture: How it got its name (2013-10-16 14:57) - HFR

A quick Google search of the term New England suggests it is only known as a North-Eastern region ofthe USA, in particular the highly popular American Football Team, the New England Patriots. Howeveraddingthe word Furniture to that searchterm unlocks a door to a new interpretation ofNew England, onethat is designed to capture the charm and characteristics of this historic region.

    Origins of New England Furniture

New England furniture is thought to have got its two major characteristics from the climate of the NewEngland region. As this vast area spans over 500 miles, it is unsurprising to hear that it experiences a widerange of climates. The North experiences humid conditions along with long winters consisting of heavy snowand freezing temperatures. Alternatively the South has the same humidity but with shorter winters andlonger summers, often resulting in summer thunderstorms.

This meant that homes had to be designed and crafted to be able to cope with this distinct battle ofthe elements as snow and thunderstorms occurred up and down the coast as well as inland New EnglandThey had to be sturdy, robust and built to last, especially in these harsh conditions. The same can be said

forNew England Furniture, with one of its mannerismsisto be strong andlonglasting, whichis why it isalways made of solid wood, particularly timber as it is often very durable.

Another distinct characteristic of New England Furniture is that it is almost always white in colour orwhite painted. Again, there are signs to show that this is linked to the heavy snowfall throughout the NewEngland region, particularly in the North. It is also suggested that the colour white resembles the NewEngland coastline where striking whitelighthouses often stand alone against a backdrop ofwhite spray beingthrown around by the Atlantic Ocean. Mypersonal favouritetheory isthatmanyof the churches and chapelsthroughout New England are painted a crisp white, portraying the purity and cleanliness that New England

    Furniture also exudes.

I hope this article has given you a quick insight into what is meant by the term New England Furni-

ture and whereit originatesfrom. The key ingredient totake away fromthis is that New England Furnitureis characterised by its pure, white appearance and its sturdiness and ability to last. Personally I think NewEngland furniture has more charm than any other furniture Ive seen, so I cannot recommend it enough.

5 Courier Nightmare Stories that put most to shame (2013-10-22 09:39) - HFR

Im sure weve allexperiencedissues with home deliveriesfrom aletter being afew dayslate ora parcelbeingleft outside for all to see, I know I certainly have. However, most peoples experiences would be consideredas excellent service in comparison to some tales. Here are five courier nightmare stories that Im sure havehaunted the customers every time theyve ordered something since.

    Courier Nightmares:

    1.)

We will dive straight in at the deep end with probably one of the most extreme cases I have ever read aboutconcerning a courier issue. During the run-up to Christmas one year, a driver for a very well known courierfirm faked his own kidnapping in order to steal 205 parcels! Not only did he steal over 13,000 worth ofproducts, he also wasted almost 100 hours of police time but was subsequently jailed for a mere 32 weeks. Not only this but the delivery firm could only identify around 100 of the parcels and could not even find outwhere the others had originally come from!

Another horror story, this time on the other side of the globe in Australia, showing you that issues canoccur wherever you order your items. Setting the scene, the customer was having an expensive piece o

electrical equipment delivered and had received an email and call to say it had been dispatched, althoughtheirwebsite wasntworkingtotracktheitem. They received a call to say itwould be deliveredthe nextdayand unfortunately the customer was out at the time they came so expected it to be delivered again, eventhough they had left clear instructions to leave it with someone in the sales office of their apartment.

The next day came and the customer had left really specific instructions to make sure it was deliveredsuccessfully. However they spent from 9.30am to 1.00pm being called by the courier firm and the driver andhaving to call back multiple times as the firm or driver were not picking up. The driver eventually answeredand spokein an aggressiveloud mannerabouthow he willdeliverwhenit is convenient forhim, giving a

time of 3.30pm and stating he will not leave it with anyone else, despite the customer saying it was ok.

At 3.50pm, 20 minutes after the driver said he would be there, he turned up and gave them their item alongwith someone elses parcel, asking the customer to deliver it to another apartment within the building! Thisis baffling on its own, let alone after the driver himself said he would not leave their parcel with anyone elsefor security reasons always best to know your neighbours!

One customer came home to find the standard letter of we attempted to deliver your item but you werentin and that the parcel had been left in a safe place (the customers recycling bin at the end of their backlaneway) Usually this would have been fine if the customers bin had been in their garden but the reason itwas at the end of the lane was because it was a collection day! When the customer went to get the parcel, they expected the worst and sure enough the bin was empty, recycling and the parcel gone. Fortunately thecustomer was given a full refund, which is the least the courier/supplier could have done.

It shows a delivery driver for arenowned courier firm strolling upto a gated propertyand launching a boxedTV monitor over the wall withsome force, then casually walking back to his van and away to his next delivery. What makes this actionworse isthat the customer was actually home and was awaiting delivery but the driver didnt even bother toring the bell on the gate and instead delivered the item with his own highly unorthodox method!

Light Shadow Trick - Interior Bright Ideas (2013-11-01 11:05) - HFR

Do you have a constant shadow appearing on your lampshade and want to get rid of it? We have had thesameissuerecentlybut found a simple solutionto get rid of thelightshadow withinyour lampshadefromthe famous interior designer; Rebecca Robeson from California.

Light Shadow TrickWithinthevideo below, Rebecca teaches us a valuabletrickif you have alamp with a clear light bulb asthisis what casts the shadow, not the lampshade.

She shows you what happens when you put a clear light bulb in a lamp, as you can see the linethat she points out in the video.

[1] Rebecca points out the shadow within the lampshade

This line is not what you think it is as you might think it is the seam in the lamp shade but asshe shows you in the video, it is not.

The seam can be moved around the lampshade but the line just stays there because its a shadow.A shadow that is created as a result of that light bulb.

[2] Showing the stationary Light Shadow next to the moveableseam

Now watch as Rebecca takes the clear light bulb out and replaces it with a white frosted bulb. Al-though it doesnt even have to be a frosted bulb it could just be a white bulb.

[3] Rebecca showing the difference between a clear andfrosted/white bulb

Rebecca shows you the difference with this new bulb and what the lamp looks like as the bulbtakes the shadowing out of the lamp shade and makes the shadow look completely diffused.

This is a very clever and simple method to rid your lamps of a light shadow. Although Rebeccauses a hallway lamp as her example in this instance, there is no reason to suggest why this trick wouldntwork on other lampshades if a shadow was occurring. For example, you may wish to use a frosted bulb onyour [5]bedside table lamp or even from your ceiling lampshades.

The best part about this tip is that frosted light bulbs are of a similar price to clear bulbs, so it

How to Shabby Chic Furniture (2013-11-02 15:42) - HFR

We recentlystumbled upon an interesting and helpful video of howto shabby chic furniture by a wonderfuvlogger called Rocky. She gives areally insightful and easy tofollow guide on how to give a piece of furniturethe ever popular shabby chic look. Rocky uses a small table in her actual video, but this technique can betransferred to almost any piece of wooden furniture.

[1] The second-hand table before the work was done to it.

Before we look at the video and process, Rocky has kindly taken the time to introduce herself and hervideo:

Hi, Im Rocky, fashion andlifestylevlogger on youtube:) My channel featureslots ofdifferentvideos from hauls, to lookbooks, DIYs to tags and silly games.Crafty DIY is great fun and can change a bland piece of furniture into a unique feature in yourroom. InthisvideoI showyou howto paintand customise alittletableto giveit that fashionableshabby chic look. Enjoy! x

    How to Shabby Chic Furniture

Firstly, here is a list of items that Rocky suggests you will need:

    A Piece of Furniture

    Sanding Block

    Coarse & Fine Sandpaper

Paint (she used a wall and ceiling paint from Wilkinson in the colour Twine)

    Paint Brush

    Small Screwdriver (optional)

    Furniture Wax & Cloth

    Fablon (Sticky-back plastic)

    Paper

    Ruler

The first thing you are going to need is obviously some furniture and Rocky is using a little table thatshe gotsecond handfrom afurniture shop. Asyou can see fromthevideo, itslooking a bitbattered and hasgot some damage on the top as well.

Step 1 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Sanding

So, the first thing you are going to want to do is get a sanding block and some coarse sand paper. Wrap thesand paper around the block and start sanding. You can get sand paper and blocks like these at most DIYstores.

You can see the difference between sanded and not sanded in the image below:

[2] Non sanded (Left) and Sanded (Right)

Step 2 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Painting

Do this all over the table until all the varnish is sanded off. Then when its all sanded, give it a quick wipedown andyou can startpainting. Rockyused a house paint, the same kind ofpaintshe would use onthe wallsor the ceilings and its from Wilkinson in the colour twine. You want to paint this on using the appropriatebrush size depending on how big your furniture is. Let the first coat dry and then do another coat.

If your piece has detail in it like Rockys, you can do what she does by taking a small screw driver andscratching away the paint in the grooves. This makes the details stand out and makes the piece look even

more antique and distressed. Another thingyou can do to make it look older is to take somefine sand paperonthe same blockyou used earlier and justbuffoffsome of the painton the corners andthe edges, wherethepaint would naturally come off through use. Once youve finished with that, brush off any dust that mighthave fallen.

[3] Painting the legs and frame whilst detailing the grooves

Step 3 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Waxing

Then the next thing you do to add a bit of character and protect the furniture is to apply furniture waxTake an old cloth or a piece of fabric, wipe it through the wax then wipe it on to the surface.

Step 4 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Adding a Fablon Top

The next thing Rocky does is to cover the top of the table because its got some damage. This would notbe applicable to all pieces but we think it is a wonderful idea regardless of whether it was damaged or notTo do this, Rocky uses fablon also known as sticky back plastic. She measures out the size of the top of thetable and cuts out a template in paper to check that it fits.

When youve done that roll out your fablon and use something to hold down the corners, Rocky hasused SpiceJars. Then put your templateinthe corner, draw aroundit and cut it out. Rocky simplyexplains

the way fablon works is that it has a film on the back and when you pull that off it is sticky underneath.

When applying it to the top of the table you want to peel and fold a strip of the film backwards, lineitup and slowlypull thefilmfrom underneath, whilst pressing downthefablon asyou go. Whenyouvepulled out all thefilm, rubit down making sureyou get out any air bubbles and making sureit goes into thecorners and the edges.

[4] Pulling back the Fablon whilst smoothing it down

Thats it! Rocky also suggests that you could always add a piece of glass to the top if you wanted to.

Step 5 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Enjoy!

    [5] Finished piece in place

We really hope you have enjoyed this video and walk through and that it has got your creative juicesflowing. Shabby Chic furniture has becomeincreasinglypopular sincethe1980s andits nothardto see why.The aged look adds so much charm and character to any room, especially when you know youve achieved

the look yourself. So why not give it a go and get inventive, wed love to see any attempts so please feel freeto post theminthe commentsection below or via our [6]Twitteraccountalong with anyothercomments orquestions you may have for us or for Rocky.

Now the plasma television, oversized sectional sofa and comfy chairs filled the space appropriately. Touchesof brilliant color tied the room together with artwork, pillows, books and accessories.

    How to distress furniture?

The technique usually involves applying coarse sandpaper or steel wool to the item to partially remove thetop layer of paint.

If there is no coating on the surface then one may be applied, allowed to dry and subsequently sanded. To create a really unusual look, several layers of different coloured paint may be used. Distressed furniturecan either be new finished pieces that are then deliberately aged, or furniture that is built using salvaged orreclaimed materials that are already partially worn (Such as the item above).

Tips on How to use distressed furniture

One of the most delightful aspects of distressed furniture is that it has an easy, relaxed and rustic style thatsuits most homes. Whether using it to create a sumptuous and romantic bedroom or to add character to abustling kitchen, it is an incredibly versatile look.

Although many of us are turning to e-readers as a convenient way to carry large numbers of books with uswhile travelling, there is nothing to beat the sheer old-fashioned pleasure of curling up in a cosy armchairwith a real page-turner.

While the idea of devoting an entire space to books might seem a little indulgent, it can be a fabulousway to make the most of any spare rooms you may have. Home libraries are becoming increasingly popularnot only as intellectual status symbols but as a place to relax and retreat from the hustle and bustle ofmodern life.

    Designing your home library

The beautyofbooks is that they can be accommodated in any room, regardless ofshape or size. The easiestway to begin creating a homelibrary isto installa selection ofbookshelves. If your room is an unusualshapethen you may decide to invest in bespoke furniture to maximum efficient use of the space.

When determining how many shelves you will need, an approximate figure can be calculated by allow-ing around onefootofshelving per 10books. Obviously this will vary if your volumes are particularlynarrowor especially over-sized.

Ensure that shelving is deep enough to accommodate larger books. Many bookcases also allow you toadjust the height of the shelves. Store bigger books low down to avoid possible injury when reaching to

retrieve them and remember that it is better to stack very tall books on their sides to avoid damaging theirspines.

The above bookcase is a perfect example of a piece that would immediately enhance any home libraryand is available [4]here.

    Organising your books

Specialist companies can provide you with ready-made libraries of books if you do not have the time or

inclination to source your own. This can be especially useful if you want to build up a collection of booksabout a specialist subject.

There are many different ways to sort and display your volumes. If you have a lot of non-fiction books youcould use a formal classification system such as the Dewey decimal. Alternatively you may choose to groupless rigidly according to approximate subject area. Alphabetical systems are popular, as is sorting by genreof fiction, such as historical, romantic orsciencefiction. From an aesthetic pointof view, grouping bysizeand colour can look very striking.

    Finishing touches

You can furnishyour homelibrary in a traditional style, complete with walnut or cherry wood shelving. Adda comfortable leather sofa or pair ofarmchairs along with a small table for drinks and a readinglight. If youhave the option, a real log fire is also a fabulous touch. Soft lighting will add to the atmosphere but makesure there is sufficient illumination by the shelving to allow you to read the titles. For a more modern lookchoose shelves in beech, metal or even glass to keep the room as bright and airy as possible.
