Basic definitions to know

Black Points – Main, tail and legs black or darker than the rest of the horse

Brand – A mark of identification. A private registered mark burned on cheek, shoulder or hip

Cross- A dark stripe across the shoulders

Walleyed- Iris is lighter color

Five Basic Horse Coat Colors – BAY

Bay- Hard to describe, easy to distinguish, Always have Black points, Has many different variations

Five Basic Horse Coat Colors Black

A black horse has nearly invariably black eyes, hooves and skin. A horse with a black body and a light muzzle or flank is not considered a true black.

Basically a red horse, main, tail and legs are usually the same color as the body. If main and tail are lighter the horse in then termed a flaxen chestnut

Snow white hair, pink skink and brown eyes, these horses are born and die the same color

Variations to coat colors

Dun (buckskin) – dominate hair is some shade of yellow, but have a large variations to their colors, most will have a dorsal stripe (Dark stipe down the back) zebra stripes on the legs and withers and all have black points

Variations to Coat Colors Grey

May be born a solid dark color or have white hairs mixed in, they become more white with age may have red or black variations in color or ay be dappled.

PAINT/PINTO Can be anyone of the coat colors with patches of white Tobiano horses have white crossing over the back

Overo horses do not have white crossing over the back

Golden color varying from bright copper to light yellow with a white main and tail “Newly minted Gold Coin”

Can be any of the base colors mixed in with white- Born and die the same color. Roan coloration in not uniform and the horse may have patches of lighter coloring
