2017 TUBA-EUPHONIUM WORKSHOP

Welcome to the 34th Annual United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, the largest of its kind in the world. We are proud to host this event here at Brucker Hall on Fort Myer—home of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”

Since the inception of this workshop in 1983, there have been many notable and brilliant performances. As you

peruse this year’s schedule, you’ll see another world-class lineup featuring Demondrae Thurman, Charles Villarubia,

David Childs, Kevin Sanders, and Tim Buzbee.

Once again we have organized a Mock Service Band Audition which will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Our 3rd annual Tuba-Euphonium Workshop Composition Contest includes eight great entries and winning compositions will be showcased in a recital on Friday at 12:00 p.m. This year also marks the return of the Armed Forces Tuba Euphonium Ensemble (AFTEE) and a solo competition that will alternate yearly between tuba and euphonium. This year’s winner will also be featured on the Friday noon recital.

Thanks to the JBM-HH Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation office for facilitating our exhibit hall. Please visit our 14 vendors in the Fort Myer Community Center on Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Also, please spread the word with those who are unable to attend the Workshop that ALL events will be live web-streamed at usarmyband.com, and then archived on YouTube. I hope you will enjoy your visit to Brucker Hall and leave with fond memories of great performances, new insights, and lasting friendships.

Concerto per Flicorno Basso. . . . . . . . . . . . . Amilcare Ponchielli

The euphonium solo competition was created so that college-age and adult players may have another opportunity to hone their skills as soloists and compete with their peers. The format was emulated after other popular euphonium competitions such as the ITEC competitions and the Leonard Falcone Competition.

All participants submitted entries online as part of a recorded first round from which finalists were invited to compete in this live round at the workshop. All finalists have prepared and will perform Ponchielli’s Concerto per Flicorno Basso.

This live round will be open to the public and adjudicated by professional musicians from a variety of the premier military bands. The competitive spirit and virtuosity of the finalists should make for an exciting opening to the 2017 Tuba-Euphonium Workshop!
