November is Election Month

Okay, it seems like the campaigns have been going on forever. You’ve seen the TV ads, the signs in the

yards and heard all of the campaign promises. Is there no end to it? There is still one more election to

be held. The Cornhusker Corvette Club Board of Directors work hard for our club. They need your

support.

Elections will be held at this month’s meeting. If you cannot make it, contact the sectary for a ballot to

vote in advance, or use the ballot on the next page. Also, remember that all of the board members can

use help. There are lots of ways to volunteer as much or as little as you want. This is your club.

2016 Suburban Corvettes Club of Minnesota Fall

Color Run - La Crosse, Wisconsin

By Carolyn Edmunson

Another Fall Color Run is in the

books. This year, CCC had a very

strong representation with 16 cars

in attendance plus a visiting friend

from Wahoo. Once again, the

weather cooperated and was

beautiful for the run. Members

from Nebraska arrived throughout

the day, Friday. We gathered

together for the Friday night

hospitality event: taco bar, free

drinks, and “live music”. What’s

not fun about all of that?!

Members and attendees got a

chance to exercise their “dancing feet”. We even saw a very unique dance of one group using the

“chairs” in various poses. It was an activity to watch – not participate in if you didn’t know what you

were doing.

Saturday morning found everyone moving early –

some to get a spot at the front of the line others

just gathering to hopefully drive the run together.

That meant everyone was out and ready for fun

before 8am. It was a bit cold to start the day –

down in the low 40’s – but the sun was out and it

warmed up nicely. We started in Rowe Park, in

Onalaska, WI which is fairly close to the hotels.

Ten o’clock was the official starting time. The run

covered about 160 miles from start to finish –

over “hills and valleys” with many colorful areas.

It was a beautiful ride that was enjoyed by all.

The trees were not the only color that was out that day. With 222 corvettes, you can imagine how

much color was present in the cars. Red or some shade of red was the most popular color with 81 cars.

Blue came in second with 33 cars; Black – 29 cars, Gray – 20 cars, Yellow – 24 cars, White – 18 cars,

Silver – 12 cars, Orange – 3 cars, and Green – 2 cars.

Last year the C5 class had the largest number of cars but this year the largest class was C6 with 91 cars.

C5 had 66 cars, C7 had 44 cars, C4 had 12 cars, C3 had 5 cars, C2 had 3 cars, and C1 had one car. There

were 10 states represented in the run with Florida having 2 drivers.

Saturday night was the banquet with good food, conversation, and for many, catching up with drivers

from other areas that had been met at other corvette events. There was a “singing DJ” along with the

silent auction and raffle to benefit their charity, Spina Bifida. The weekend ended with the Sunday

morning Brunch and buffet.

Reflecting on the event, it was indeed a fun event to attend

and was even more fun because there were so many

attending from CCC. It is the perfect way to travel the

byways and see some of the country around us at a colorful

time of year. You can’t beat sharing in the combination of

pretty scenery, good food, great company, and great

weather. Isn’t that what the social part of our club is all

about? I think so. I hope others will be able to take

advantage of this opportunity in the future.

Dream Racing

By Perry Dawes

Ever have a dream about driving an exotic car on a racetrack?

I had often wondered if it would be much different from my

Corvette, and on October 27th I got to have a very special

experience driving a Lamborghini Superleggera on a racetrack

at the Las Vegas Speedway.

So how did that happen? The husband of my wife’s best friend

received a gift certificate to Dream Racing and contacted me

and asked if I would like to go with him to drive an exotic car

at the Dream Racing track. I looked up their website and was

totally impressed as you could choose a Ferrari, Porsche,

McLaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Corvette, Mercedes,

Audi, or a Nissan. There were street-legal supercars of all these brands, plus fully-outfitted GT race cars

of Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche to choose from for your driving experience. I figured that if I were to

do this, I should select a car that I likely would not have the opportunity to drive on a race track

anywhere else, so I selected the Lamborghini Superleggera with its V-10 562 HP @ 8,000 RPM engine

that had a top speed of 202 MPH.

Upon arriving at the Dream Racing facilities inside the Las Vegas

Speedway, I was totally impressed with the professional

buildings and of course, all the beautiful race cars. Linda, her

friend Ingrid and her husband, Michael, and I were all warmly

welcomed in the Registration area, and of course, asked to sign a

“waiver” (sound familiar?) However, Dream Racing handled all

the insurance, so that was a big relief. We were taken to large

classroom where we watched and listened to our driving

instructor as he explained about the cars we had chosen to drive and talked and showed the correct

driving technique in each of the corners of the 1.2 mile racetrack.

Next we spent about 20 minutes on a 3-D Simulator that showed the

racetrack and we could practice “virtually driving” the car on the

track. The instructor stood beside you and gave you the commands

he would use while on the track so we could become familiar with his

instructions. This was very difficult for me, as you did not “feel” the

car, but after spinning out a couple of times, it began to get easier.

After the Simulator Session, we went down to the track where the

cars were parked under canopies, just waiting for someone to drive

them. After getting fitted for our helmets, Michael went to his

Page 7: HHUUSSKKEERR NNEEWWSS ’’NN VVIIEEWWSS · the insurance, so that was a big relief. We were taken to large classroom where we watched and listened to our driving instructor as he

Porsche 911 Turbo S and I climbed into the Lamborghini with my instructor (who was an Italian from

Rome) and we started around the track. Immediately I was impressed with the acceleration of the car (0

to 60 in 3.4 secs.) and after sliding through the first corner decided that I should take it a little slower

until I got used to the car and the track. With the help of my instructor (he had a microphone on his

helmet and there was a speaker in mine) we managed to gradually increase our speed and improve our

“line” so we were much faster with each lap. The car’s transmission had paddle shifters and that took a

few tries before it felt normal (the first attempt to shift from 2nd to 3rd, was not good as I turned on the

wipers!) Once I began to become familiar with the track and the car, it was truly exhilarating to

accelerate out of turn 9 and shift from 3rd to 4th to 5th gear roaring down the straightaway. I didn’t

know how fast we went before hitting the brakes, as I was too busy setting up for turn 1, but the

instructor told me later that we were about 145 MPH. Wow, you could really feel the g-forces,

especially in the turns, as the car just went where you turned the wheel, with not much worry about

spinning out. The 5 laps “at speed” were over way too quickly, and just when I was really beginning to

get comfortable with such a powerful and impressive car, it was time to head to the pits so my heart

rate could return to normal.

After we finished driving, we spent some time looking at

some of the other fabulous cars, and Linda even got to sit in

the McClaren (with the gull-wing doors) and then the Ferrari

458 GT race car (complete with roll cage) Dream Racing

provides you with a video of your ride (if you wish to buy it)

but I didn’t need to as I will remember that ride for a long

time. The entire staff of people at Dream Racing were very

professional and friendly and helped create a lasting

impression with their impressive selection of cars and

detailed instruction. They also cater to “corporate” events

where they can handle from 10 to 50 persons, often giving

discounts and special perks.

The end result was a really great driving experience in a

unique and expensive car, with careful attention to detail

from an experienced group of people that I would

recommend to anyone who wants to get their blood pumping

and adrenalin rushing.

Trick or Treat

It was a treat with no tricks as members of CCC met in costume at Quaker Steak and Lube for a meet and

greet. Some people decorated their cars in the parking lot and everyone enjoyed the delicious treats

inside as we supported one of our Council Bluffs contributors.

Veteran’s Parade

The chill of November was definitely not in the air as 31 cars and 49 people joined in the festivities of

the annual Veteran’s Parade through downtown Bellevue. The unseasonably warm temperatures made

for a perfect day to put the tops down and enjoy the Indian Summer weather.

After the parade, it was off to Summer Kitchen (perfect for a day like this) for an opportunity to do what

we do best…….eat!

Christmas Tree Decoration Competition

Let’s put a smile on someone less fortunate, and add a splash

of hope to their life. Last year’s tree decorations were very

creative and a whole lot of fun decorating. This year lets spice

things up a bit. In order for the recipient to enjoy these “out of

sight” decorated trees, please bring your creation to the Toy’s

for Tot’s program December 3rd at Cassio’s. No larger than 2

foot. There will be Class winners and People’s Choice winner.

Should be a hoot! More information regarding distribution

coming soon.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

On behalf of Mohm’s Place in Council Bluffs, I would like to say “Thank You” to those of you who have

collected toiletries on your travels and turned them in to me at club meetings. As many of you know,

personal hygiene items are difficult to come by for those in our community with little to no income. We

have food pantries and food stamps to help out but soap, shampoo and tooth paste are not readily

available. Your contributions allow these people some personal dignity.

Thanks again and I hope you will continue to support me in this effort.

Proud to be a part of this club.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by President

Jerry Koraleski to start the meeting followed by

a moment of silence for those who need healing

and for those who have lost loved since last

month’s meeting.

President Koraleski indicated that there are

2017 Corvette calendars for sale.

John and Brenda Salmans donated a $50 gas

card for the drawing which will be held later in

the meeting, so Jerry encouraged members to

purchase the tickets for the 50/50 as the

drawing for the gas card will come out of the

bucket that holds our charity tickets. Service

and for being a Contributor to the club!

There were raving revues of the Low-Speed

Auto Cross held at the Lincoln Airport and Jerry

called Ervin (Swervin Ervin) to the front to talk

about his accomplishment at the last race. Erv

reported that after 15 years of chasing a top,

out of state driver and mentor, Erv was finally

able to beat his time and Erv got the Fastest

Koraleski reported there were about 30 drivers

at the event and the participation was down

some because some of the regular drivers were

at the Fall Color Run. Teresa Eller was missed

because her Grandmother had passed away

unexpectedly and Teresa was in Alabama during

the event with her family. Our sympathies go

Jannette Gunderson, Secretary, received a

motion from Sandy

Swift and a second

from Kathy Gau to

approve last month’s

minutes as published

in the newsletter.

Marie Manz, Membership Director, introduced

two new members to

the club; Kim Murray

and William Issac.

Kim is sponsored by

Tim and Gina Ogle and

William is sponsored by

Pat and Sandy Swift. At this time there are 411

Cornhusker Corvette members.

President Koraleski then reported on the

Kearney Drags which were rained out. The

Kearney venue was gracious enough to

withdraw the charges for the event and Jerry

negotiated a price on the upper parking lot for

the Low Speed Auto Cross event. Attendance

was low. However, the good news is that there

may be a different program next year of adding

1/8 drags to the “circuit”.

Because Don Angeroth, Competition Director,

had some other obligations and couldn’t be

with the club tonight, Jerry Koraleski was giving

Don’s reports throughout the evening. Tim

Web, at the Mid America Center, has been

contacted and he welcomes the club to hold

Low Speed Auto Crossing at this venue next

year. The Board had been wondering if that

would be possible with all the building they are

doing at their site.

Shopping for little ones at Christmas time can

be such fun and plans for Toys For Tots are

wrapping up for December 3 at Cascio’s which

is one of our faithful contributors. The Marines

will be there to pick up the toys.

As you arrive, there will be a sheet for you to

record the dollar amount you spent on your

gift/gifts so our Treasurer may report the club’s

total donation to NCCC.

Time to put the Awards Banquet date on your

calendar. It will be January 14 at 6 o’clock at

Cascios. This year, there will NOT be an

invitation sent to each member. The responses

will be done through the computer. The BOD

looked at the expense of these invitations and

the return rate and decided to go digital this

year. More information will be coming.

Ray Kennedy announced that the “Vet’s Moving

Forward” donations are handled by the

Midlands Community Foundation. Ron

Hernandez, a CCC Member, spearheads the

“Vet’s Moving Forward” charity and Ron

reported that any donation given to this cause

will be matched by Midlands Community

Foundation dollar for dollar in the month of

December. Each donor will receive a receipt for

tax purposes. Once again, our Treasurer would

like you to notify him of your donation so he

can report the club members’ generosity to

NCCC.

Tom Horeis, Treasurer,

discussed the financial

reports of the club and we

are $7,000 ahead of

budget at this time.

Jon Manz, Governor, had no report.

Jerry Koraleski, sprinkled in an interesting

statistic from the Competition Director at this

time. Thirty Seven members have made the 200

Point club. Way to go! Points are accumulated

by attending and participation in events and

activities throughout the year. Those who have

200 points are acknowledged, therefore, you

may see members wearing shirts with “200

points” on their shirt sleeves.

Pat Swift, Public Relations Director, has been

successful in collecting from Contributors and

didn’t have any report but that K & K Trophies,

who the club used for our trophies, are closing

due to a death in the family.

Bob Edmundson,

Activity Committee

Member, reported that

there was a fantastic

turnout for the LaCross

Fall Color Run. There were 32 members in 16

cars that attended. More club members are

turning out for this trip every year!

The Hay Rack Ride, unfortunately, was

cancelled this year. Bob continued with future

activities which are on the calendar of CCC with

all the details.

Nancy Bronner announced the 50/50 pot was

$103 and Kathy Gau read the October

birthdays. Mike Manley’s name was drawn for

the birthday drawing which gave him the

opportunity to have first choice of prizes on the

table.

Bill Cashell, Newsletter Editor, was warmly

welcomed as he came to speak to our

members. He thanked Carolyn Edmundson, for

the great article about the

Club’s charitable heart.

Because our club does give

throughout the year, Bill

intends to let that be known

and written about in the

newsletter more frequently

next year.

Gene Gau volunteered to spearhead the

process of applying for the Duntov award. You

may hear someone call it the Duntov II because

our club has won this

prestigious award a few

years ago. There is a lot

of work involved, but

CCC is sitting in a good

Page 18: HHUUSSKKEERR NNEEWWSS ’’NN VVIIEEWWSS · the insurance, so that was a big relief. We were taken to large classroom where we watched and listened to our driving instructor as he

position for this award with everything the club

did in 2016.

Tim Ogle, Webmaster, absent, no report.

JB, Points Chairman, has us all wondering who

is in contention for getting the “Ralph Award”.

He tells us that at this time, it is undecided as to

whom it may be awarded. CCC is 6,100 ahead of

the #2 club and JB has not posted all of the

points yet.

JB mentioned that there are 76 members in the

“Vets with Vettes” club that is a group within

CCC.

Members have

been generous with

newspapers for the

“puppies” and he

will take one more

month of black and

white printed newspapers. As JB was taking his

seat, Jerry mentioned that he saw on TV that

the “Hearts United For Animals” in Auburn, NE

took in 45 dogs from the recent hurricane.

Another date to put on your calendar for next

year, is June 15, 16 & 17. Sid Harchelroad,

owner of Harchelroad Motors, another C7

Contributor for our club, contacted Jerry and

said that Mike Yager from Mid America Motor

Works is sponsoring a day at the track in

Hastings, NE. There will be a lot to do there on

those dates.

Jerry said that he and Gene Gau are going to the

next Governors’ meeting to wrap up the 2016

Convention.
