Hi Guys 

  

We just returned from another adventure.  

  

Andrew Katay, the man behind the famous Katay Racing business, communicated with me via the whispering wire.  Andrew mentioned that it was time for him and his Gauteng peeps to come and visit us at Kwa Nokeng again. 

  

We had a few spots open and I invited my good friend John Bredenkamp along. This conversation, also along the whispering wire, went something like this:  

  

“John, please come ride the Patti Pans with us”. 

  

“Im in” John replied. 

  

“But John, you live in Somerset West. How are you going to get your bikes and kit all the way to Botswana?” 

  

“Pffft… you’re an amateur Clinton” 

  

Two days later this truck stopped outside my Pretoria house. 

  

“Ding Dong, delivery from Mr Bredenkamp!” 

  

 

  

Out popped a brand new KTM 690 that was going to be John’s weapon of choice and a Husqvarna.  

  

Those people by the mountain can organise stuff  

 

  

I caught up with the Katay crew at Kwa Nokeng lodge where we stayed over.  

  

This is my home, but it’s only the second time this year that I have stayed over. I need a reality check of note.  

  

  

The traditional dancers of Lerala blessed our journey as always.  

  

  

We were off early the next day and disaster struck early with one of my trailer tyres going porridge. 

  

While we stood there replacing the spare, the opposite tyre decide to go to the pearly gates as well. I have heard of spouses going close after each other, but not tyres. 

  

  

Bertus ‘’MacGuyver’’ our Medic, and general fixer of all things except broken hearts, managed to fix the other tyre’s valve with duct tape and solution until we got to Palapye 

  

The Outdoor Medical ambulance had a blowout on the way to Kwa Nokeng the day before. As we stopped at the tyre place in Palapye I could hear one of the VW’s tyres calling it a day as well. 

  

  

Less than an hour into our adventure and we had to replace 4 tyres. 

 

I learnt a valuable lesson, you must replace your tyre valves once a year as they perish. This is what caused the blowout on both my tyres. 

 

One of our guests at the back also had problems.  

  

They were just driving along admiring the Botswana scenery when one of their bikes saw an awesome section along the road and decided it wanted to jump off and check it out.  

  

  

  

We decided this year to spread some goodwill to the less fortunate people in the village of Mmatsumo. 

  

Mmatsumo is a small village on the outskirts of the Makgadikgadi Pans. 

  

When I told the Katay group about this, they kindly offered to bring some warm clothes and blankets along for the less fortunate Batswana. Kwa Nokeng also threw in a few blankets. 

  

We received a warm welcome by Kgosi Phetsogang and his people. 

  

The Kgosi explained to our guests what it meant to be a Kgosi of a village and what his roles and responsibilities were. 

  

My fellow Batswana invited a few of our guests to dance with them as well. 

  

  

I thought I would jump in and show the Kgosi my moves.  

  

The Kgosi saw that my moves were not cool at all and immediately announced that the dancing was now over.  

  

I just shuffled to the side and quietly sulked.

We donated the blankets and clothes and the Kgosi kindly offered to keep an eye on our vehicles and trailers while we were away. 

  

  

I quickly walked with the Kgosi and showed him all the bikes. He showed a lot of interest in the KATAY Polaris RZR 1000cc side‐by‐side ATV’s.  

  

We explained about the suspension, acceleration, safety features etc.   

  

The Kgosi just shook his head and said “Dilo tsa makgoa” which loosely translates to “The stuff of white people” I thought this was very funny  

  

Now I will have to take you to the end of our adventure when we do our prize giving.  

  

Our “running out of talent” award this year went to Veron, below. When we arrived at Mmatsumo, Veron was nowhere to be found. I phoned him and asked him where he was. “I’m having brunch at Chicken Licken in Palapye bru” came the reply. 

  

  

I told him that we will leave a GPS at the little General Dealer shop in Mmatsumo loaded with waypoints to our bivouac for him.  

  

We dropped the GPS off at the little shop and told them that someone will come by in a day or so to collect it.  

  

I had a few South African guests with me and they all said that we will never see that GPS again. I told them not to worry. 

  

  

  

We had burnt daylight and had to make good time to our bivouac where Shumie, aka Shrimpie, was waiting for us. 

  

  

We made good time until the Tswagong Vet gate when one of our back‐up vehicles had a flat tyre. This marked our 5th blowout in 24 hours.

We arrived at the bivouac  just as the Botswana sun said goodnight. 

  

This was Heather and Brigitte Katay’s first visit to the Patti Pans and they seemed very happy to be here.

It was great to sit around the Botswana DSTV once again with the milky way shining down on us. 

  

 

  

The next morning we had a quick breakfast and we were off visiting Chapman’s and Greens Boabab’s.  

  

  

Dave, my traveling companion and Kwa Nokeng Oil mascot, also joined us for the adventure.

After some amazing riding and lunch in Gweta, it was time to head back to the bivouac and Shrimpie’s oxtail

We were sitting around the fire as the sun was setting when Friedel, one of our guests on a KTM1190 adventure bike, casually walks up to me, opens a cold drink, takes a long sip, sighs, stares at the sunset and calmly says: 

  

“Clinton can I quickly use the Hilux and trailer please” 

  

“No worries, what’s up?” 

  

“Er umm ehhh Eddie, Jan & I were riding in the small pan at the back of the camp” 

  

“Yeeees?” 

  

“Well… Eddie’s collarbone isn’t working anymore.” 

  

“WHAT?!” 

  

“I think he may have fallen of his bike.”

The dude is tuff: he stayed with us the entire adventure and rode in a side‐by‐side for the rest of the trip. Bertus fed him some of the good stuff on a daily basis

Oh and by the way, when we got to camp, Veron miraculously appeared!  He drove via Nata and never collected the GPS we left for him at the General Dealer in Mmatsumo. 

  

Then next morning we were off to Elephant sands. The pictures say it all! 

  

  

  

I always do this with our guests. I will look for a real remote spot on the pans, and spread them out.  

  

You can assume with some certainty that where each of these riders are standing, no other human beings have stood before. I worked it out. 

  

The Makgadikgadi Pans measures 12 000 sq/km’s.  

  

If you stood on a square meter, the chance that someone else has stood in that exact spot before you is 1 in 12000 000 000.00 

  

  

  

  

  

Looking at the elephants here reminded me of a story my Dad once told me. We were on holiday in the Chobe in 1978 and I was about six years old. 

  

I saw this big elephant and pointed to the elephants penis that almost touched the ground’, and asked my Dad what that was. 

  

My Dad said it was nothing. I saw my Mom gesturing to him to tell me what it was. 

  

“Ok, let me tell you what happened my boy.”  

  

“A hunter tried to shoot the elephant but the elephant managed to chase him down and swallowed him whole.” 

  

“The thing you see there is the hunter’s arm sticking out, and he is looking for rocks to throw the elephant with,” my Dad said with a straight face. 

  

A week later I was back at boarding school and told my friends not to never ever mess with Botswana elephants.

The next morning we were up at 05h00, had breakfast and hit the CT5 cutline towards the Hunter’s road and back to Nata. 

  

It was going to be a long and very hard day. 

  

I warned the riders to be vigilant as we were now riding in Big 5 country

This is the “Old Hunter’s Road”. Livingstone himself trekked along this route when he discovered the Victoria Falls.

Jamey ran out of talent when he hit an elephant hole and damaged the suspension of the RZR. 

  

It took them an hour or so to get it repaired again. Amazing the punishment these cars can take. 

  

  

  

We decided to have lunch and refuel while the guys were doing repairs. 

  

  

  

Maarten, our Kwa Nokeng Oil Maun manager, drove all the way down with our fuel.

The group split up and we arrived back at the bivouac at various times, the latest was Renier and co who arrived well after 20h00.

The next morning, it was hard getting the guys out of bed, packed and ready to head back to Kwa Nokeng.

We made our way back to Mmatsumo, where friendly people waited for us.

We all loaded our bikes and made our way back to Kwa Nokeng. I remembered the GPS and we quickly pulled into the old shop. Pierre popped in and the lady behind the counter told him that the person never came to fetch the GPS and she handed the unit over to Pierre. I am so proud to be a citizen of 

Botswana, Pula Pula! 

  

I received a call from Andrew on the road telling me that one of their trailers was not working so well. 

  

They did some repairs and found a guy that could do some welding in Lethlakane. Andrew arrived at Kwa Nokeng at 01h30 the next morning. 

  

  

We did our prize‐giving thing the next morning. We have four awards: 

  

- Running out of Talent Award (Veron)

- Broken Sprocket Award (Renier)

- Just Like on the Farm Award (Eddie)

- Most Improved Rider Award (Salim)

  

  

Now we have taken loads and loads of people to the pans on bikes, a lot of which owned their own dealerships.

 Every once in a while you come across someone that deserves a break. Pierre van der Boll lives on the edge of the Makgadikgadi pans. He always joins us on our adventures and lends a hand wherever he can without asking for anything in return. Pierre’s passion is dirt bikes and he always talks about riding again. I have this 2003 Ktm 525exc in my garage and it does not get much attention these days. While driving back from the pans on Monday with Pierre and one of our guests, John Bredenkamp, I mentioned to Pierre that that he is welcome to take the KTM. Before he could reply John added that Pierre could have his adventure kit consisting of an Arai helmet, enduro jacket, boots etc. How's that coming from someone that has never met Pierre before?!
