Lime in Asphalt

Lime is used in hot-mix asphalt as an anti-stripping additive and as mineral filler. Numerous highway depar tments have found that incorporating hydrated lime into hot-mix asphalt adds years to the life of a highway, thus making the addition very cost effective.

The addition of hydrated lime can reduce stripping, rutting, cracking and aging. Hydrated lime substantially improves each of these properties when used alone, and also works well in conjunction with polymer additives, helping to create pavement systems that will per form to the highest expectations for many years.

Lime is also used to upgrade marginal aggregates. In addition to the chemical effects that reduce stripping potential and the aging impact resulting from oxidative hardening, the filler effect improves resistance to high-temperature rutting and adds fracture toughness at low temperatures.

Hydrated lime is used in a variety of industrial applications including

water treatment, as an anti-stripping agent in asphalt, and in soil stabilization. Graymont carefully monitors its production processes to provide products that meet exacting specifications. These include applicable ASTM, NSF-60 and AWWA B202 standards.

Many on-the-job factors can affect a worker’s ability to get the job done. Whether it is the health of the employee at stake or the health of the equipment used, downtime is extremely expensive. One factor in the spotlight right now is the effect of crystalline silica on health and safety.

Crystalline silica is a basic component of soil, sand, granite, and many other minerals. Quartz is the most common form of crystalline silica. All of these forms may become respirable size particles when workers chip, cut, drill,

or grind objects that contain crystalline silica. When this silica is ingested by a human or by a machine, bad things happen. Studies show that upwards of 600 workers die each year from silicosis developed from over exposure to silica at work. Not only is this dust detrimental for the workers, but the dust is also damaging to equipment.

Polar Mobility is one area company that is working diligently to assist companies save lives and capital. As a charter member of International Society of Environmental Enclosure

Engineers (ISEEE), Polar Mobility offers expertise in health and safety, particularly when it comes to meeting the requirements of local laws regarding silica/DPM/Asbestos exposure. Understanding the details of the permissible exposure limit (PEL) and meeting the 25, 50, or 100µg/m3 exposure limits can be challenging without a little guidance. The team at Polar Mobility not only understands, but in three easy steps, can help in meeting the regulatory requirements.

Polar Mobility introduces the simple three-step solution to superior cab filtration. Beginning with clean fresh air, the Sy-Klone RESPA-CF powered pre-cleaners are a cost-effective way to clean the air before it reaches the plenum. This fresh air system dramatically extends filter life and reduces the frequency of costly HVAC repairs by filtering with a MERV16 filter, which removes over 95% of all respirable dust (.3 to 1 micron), or HEPA Filter, which removes 99.95% of all respirable dust, before it gets into the HVAC system.

Step two, focuses on cleaning recirculated air within the cab with the Sy-Klone RESPA-CFX. This product offers customizable recirculation filtration to protect cab electronics, increase operator protection, and reduce harmful particulate buildup on the HVAC evaporator core.

To complete the cab filtration system, Polar Mobility offers an electronic pressure monitoring system. This easy-to-install customizable unit gives real-time information on cab pressure, audibly alarms the operator when pressure drops below required level, notifies the operator when to change the filters in the RESPA system, can be connected to remote telemetry systems, and satisfies the requirement for a cab pressure monitor when required by law. This is an essential part of the complete RESPA Cab Air Quality System.

Improve the cab environment for operators, reduce the dust exposure of HVAC and cab electronics, extend maintenance intervals, and lower operating costs, all in three simple steps. EMCO Waterworks

Looking for a safer way to bevel pipe? Reed’s Cordless Power Pipe Beveller quickly and easily deburrs and bevels plastic pipe of 2” diameter’s and up. EMCO Waterworks has recently introduced the REED Beveller to its product offerings.

This lightweight tool creates fast, smooth cuts in the field with ease, making it extremely useful on most PVC glued and bell and gasket joints. The Reed Cordless Power Beveller is easily adjustable for bevel length. The RBIT1 router

bit evenly cuts a 15° external bevel up to 5/8” long which works ef fectively on smaller diameter PVC pipes.

The RBIT2 router bit can be used to create 12° bevels up to 1” long. To eliminate damage to the gasket, pipe bevel is required when installing into a pipe bell. Bevels on cement joints allow for even distribution of solvent cement glue to maximize glue contact area.

For internal bevels on plastic conduit of 2” or more, electrical and utility contractors can now appreciate the ability to make pipe interiors snag-free. The CPBIDKIT is a complete kit for ID beveling. The CPBKIT can be conver ted to an internal beveller with the optional ID Beveller Shroud (CPBIDS).

The Cordless Power Beveller Kit (CPBKIT) consists of the beveller attachment powered by a 22,000 RPM, 18V cordless die grinder with a 4 Amp hour Lithium-Ion batter y. The grinder has more than sufficient RPMs to provide smooth cuts. The included RBIT1 and Rbit2 cutting tool is a 4-flute, carbide router bit which delivers consistent, safe cuts quickly on any site.

Features:

• Portable, cordless power tool deburrs and bevels plastic quickly

• Adjustable CPB beveller creates external bevel on 2” and larger diameter plastic pipe

• Long-lasting carbide router bit with four flutes and high RPMs for fast, smooth cuts

• Ideal for large diameter plastic pipe• Optional accessory beveller shroud

CPBIDS rapidly bevels 2” and larger internal diameters

• No fine dust partials • Extremely safe way to

bevel pipe

Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd., a prime contractor in Alberta, was the first contractor in Canada to test the Reed beveller. During this pilot project Volker Stevin and EMCO determined that the RBIT1 router bit was not long enough to properly bevel larger diameter PVC pipes. This feedback was provided to Reed’s engineering

team and a short time later they introduced the RBIT2 router bit. This newly designed bit is 1” long and can properly bevel up to and including 24” PVC pipes.

Assad Rafih of Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd. had this to say about the beveller, “I liked using the Reed Cordless Power Beveller. I think it’s an awesome tool that can safely and quickly bevel pipes on site. I think the kit needs to come with 2 batteries as we are using this in the trench and need to make sure the beveller is always ready to go. I really have nothing bad to say about it, we will be using the beveller on all sites and I am happy and excited to star t using it.”

The biggest benefit is how safe the tool really is compared to traditional methods. The router bit is protected by the shroud allowing the contractor to confidently bevel the pipe without worry. When cutting the pipe it creates medium to small PVC shavings, this eliminates the concern of contractors breathing in fine particles. The Reed Beveller is battery operated - eliminating any concern of gas fumes in the trench.

Contact your local EMCO Waterworks location for more information on the Reed Cordless Pipe Beveller.

The importance of managing lead content compliance and contaminant leaching in municipal water distribution systems is of paramount importance. NSF/ANSI 61 certification now requires fire hydrants to conform to contaminant leachate tests for lead and other contaminants. In addition to this, NSF/ANSI 372 further requires products being utilized in water distribution systems meet a weighted average lead content of no more than 0.25%.

Using hydrants that are certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372 ensures they will not contribute to excessive levels of lead or other contaminants in distribution systems.

All CLOW Canada Fire hydrants are made in Canada and are certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 61 and are compliant with NSF/ANSI 372.

NSF 61, NSF 372 and Lead ContentWhat are the requirements for NSF/ANSI Standard 61 and lead?

NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects was published in 1988 to establish minimum requirements for the control of potential adverse human health effects from products that contact drinking water. NSF/ANSI 61 contains

requirements that restrict both 1) the level of lead that can be contained in water contact materials of drinking water products, and 2) the level of lead that can extract out of the product and into drinking water.

Lead Content RequirementsRestriction on the Use of Lead-Containing Materials

Section 3.5 of NSF/ANSI 61 precludes the use of lead as an intentional additive in wetted materials and components of products, with the exception of brass and bronze meeting the definition of “lead free” within the specific provision of the U.S. Safe

Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Through 2013, this was applied under NSF/ANSI 61 as brass or bronze containing no more than 8 percent lead. Products are also required to comply with all chemical extraction requirements of NSF/ANSI 61, including lead.

In 2011, U.S. federal legislation passed that revised the definition of “lead free” within the SDWA. In brief, the definition now requires that the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures meet a weighted average lead content of no more than 0.25 percent. The changes in the SDWA were due to take effect January 4, 2014. As Section 3.5 of NSF/ANSI 61 requires that products comply with the lead-free requirements of the SDWA, all NSF/ANSI 61 products falling into the scope of the legislation are also required to comply with the new 0.25 percent maximum lead content requirement. The date of this required compliance under NSF/ANSI 61 was the same as the effective date in the SDWA, January 4, 2014.

NSF 372 and NSF 61 Annex G

NSF/ANSI 61 was revised in December 2008 to establish requirements for use when a 0.25 percent lead content requirement needs to be met in addition to current chemical extraction requirements of the standard. The requirements were placed in Annex G - ‘Weighted Average Lead Content Evaluation Procedure to a 0.25 percent Lead Requirement’. A request was

made to add these requirements to the standard to allow manufacturers the option of being certified to a lead content standard, such as the California Health and Safety Code (Section 116875), commonly known as AB1953. That law, which went into effect January 1, 2010, applies to any pipe, pipe or plumbing fitting, or fixture intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption through drinking or cooking. Similar laws have since been enacted in Vermont, Maryland and Louisiana, and took effect nationally through the revised U.S. SDWA in 2014.

In 2010, the lead content evaluation procedures of Annex G were moved to NSF/ANSI 372: Drinking Water System Components - Lead Content, and Annex G were updated to simply reference it. Movement of the procedures from Annex G to NSF/ANSI 372 allowed for their application on products beyond the scope of NSF/ANSI 61 like drinking water treatment units and food service equipment. It also allowed for citing compliance separate from NSF/ANSI 61 for those jurisdictions wishing to do so.

At the same time Annex G procedures were moved to NSF/ANSI 372, the annex was balloted to be retired three years later. The end of that three-year period was October 2013. Although Annex G was retired from NSF/ANSI 61, NSF continues to support the “-G” cer tification marks as long as they are of value. This

is anticipated to be for a number of years as they provide a simple mechanism of denoting compliance with both the chemical extraction requirements of NSF/ANSI 61 and the new “lead-free” requirements of U.S. state and federal laws.

Currently, all products certified by NSF as compliant with Annex G are also compliant with NSF/ANSI 372. No additional testing is required beyond the normal routine monitoring of certified products. The listings of products currently certified by NSF to Annex G will continue to bear the [G] certification footnote:

[Current footnote]

[G] Product complies with NSF/ANSI 61 Annex G, NSF/ANSI 372 and conforms with lead content requirements for “lead-free” plumbing as defined by California, Vermont, Maryland, and Louisiana state laws and the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act which took effect in January 2014.

[Future footnote]

[G] Product complies with NSF/ANSI 372 and conforms with lead content requirements for “Lead-free” plumbing as defined by California, Vermont, Maryland, and Louisiana state laws and the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act in effect as of January 4, 2014.

The SmartCover is a self-contained, wireless level monitoring system with immediate alarming and historical data logging capabilities.

One of the primary uses of the SmartCover system is the prevention and advanced notification of Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) and Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO). This is achieved by continual monitoring of the water level within a collection system. When the water level rises above the customer predetermined threshold due to a constriction downstream or capacity issues, an alarm is sent

directly to emergency response personnel.

This enables the customer to receive advance notice of an issue arising in the collection system so that corrective action can be taken before an overflow occurs. Alarm acknowledgement, alarm level thresholds and system status can be changed and viewed remotely via the SmartCover System’s secure web site. This award-winning monitoring system is a completely self-contained, turn-key solution developed specifically for the water and wastewater industry in close collaboration with industry leaders.

The Smar tCover system was built to solve industr y problems at high value and low burden. Providing completely reliable two way wireless communications, the system provides real-time continuous remote sensing, user-definable alarm settings, an easy-to-use web based inter face, and long and shor t term data collection and analysis. Built to operate at sites that are environmentally dif ficult, have no power or communications, the Smar tCover provides “instant infrastructure” - it can operate vir tually anywhere in the world, installs in minutes and is on-line and ready for you immediately.

Unique features of SmartCover include:• Satellite communications with

extremely high reliability• Data communication from anywhere

on earth• Easily attaches to any manhole or

SmartFLOE Flow measurement is a valuable management metric for any open channel water conveyance system. However, conventional flow measurement methods can be expensive and complex, posing challenges with regard to reliability, data collection and ease of maintenance.

The SmartFLOE Flow Estimation System addresses these problems by providing a low-cost, low maintenance, high reliability method for remote flow measurement and communication. Using the core SmartCover technology for non-contact remote monitoring and global data communication, the advanced SmartFLOE algorithm provides ongoing real-time measurement of flow rate.

SmartTrendSmartTrend is a comprehensive software tool that enables users to anticipate overflow events at remote monitoring sites long before they occur.

SmartTrend automatically scans each site to analyze trends in the collection system. It determines conditions using advanced signal processing and pattern recognition and sends Advisories to users when a trend is discovered. Users have an advanced method available to identify future issues, including alarms for SSOs and CSOs, before they occur. It aids users and promotes advanced planning for maintenance and capital repairs.

Key benefits include:• Operational costs are lowered with regular business hours

response.• Risks are eliminated by avoiding after hours emergency

response.• Managers and supervisors acquire a new tool to increase overall

efficiency with fast and easy assessment of specific situations.

SmartRain RD SmartRain RD is a new tool that integrates rain data with level or flow data in the collection system. For users of the SmartCover level monitor or the SmartFLOE flow monitor, rain data is acquired and presented in the user interface on a single display.

This data integration capability provides an easy method to view and understand the relationship of level or flow changes as affected by rain. It is particularly useful for studying Inflow and Infiltration (I&I), where it merges these two essential data streams and seamlessly characterizes I&I sources within the collection system.

The mission of SmartRain RD is to:• Provide integrated rainfall and level/flow data in real-time• Create a Profile of the Sewershed• Identify I&I costly sources• Provide easy, rapid, low cost deployment

The Exzalt is a precision machine producing less material bounce and better road adhesion, vir tually eliminating over-application on roadside shoulders. The Hi-Way Xzalt delivers a power ful 70:30 ratio of dr y/liquid material via an innovative directional spinner that broadcasts mixed materials on one, two or three lanes to reduce time, fuel and miles. Xzalt meets the toughest demands for snow and ice management:

• Higher application speeds• Longer routes• Fewer spreaders

What’s the benefit of 70:30 application? Properly mixing liquid and granular material with a 70:30 ratio reduces salt usage while accelerating ice

melt – up to 70% less than normal. The optimum mixture (approximately 60 gallons (227 l) of liquid per one ton (907 kg) of salt) resembles the consistency of oatmeal, providing less material bounce, less influence from wind and improved adhesion to the road. In addition, the mixture accelerates the deicing process.

Additional features on the Xzalt include:

• Adjustable height enclosed chute fits various trucks

• Integrated liquid system• High-volume molded tanks with

integrated baffles• Easy ground-level rear fill• Integrated storage leg system for

quick, one-person installation and removal

• Painted carbon steel or unpainted 304 stainless steel

• 10 ft. (3.05 m), 12 ft. (3.66 m), or 14 ft. (4.27 m) lengths

• Galvanized screens• Inspection ladder• Work lamps• Beacon or strobe lights

Superior Precision ApplicationA forward-thinking direction spinner and control take Xzalt beyond ordinary – one touch lets operators adjust symmetrical or asymmetrical patterns on one, two, or three lanes. The spinner assembly swivels, and conveyor and spinner speed automatically adjust to apply the spread pattern precisely to the left, center or right of the spreader. Material blending starts when dry salt mixes with liquid upon exiting the spinner chute and ends before exiting the spinner.

• Spinner, liquid pump and conveyor sensors eliminate application rate and controller setting guesswork

• Positive displacement direct-drive gear pump with sensor for precise application rates

• Adjust spinner system from the cab

Engineered Spreader ControlThe Xzalt features FORCE America SSC6100 spreader control, specifically engineered to work seamlessly with this precision applicator. Both new and existing 6100 controls are compatible with the Xzalt – a simple update provides the intelligence to operate it. Unique, easy-to-use features set this controller apart:
