BY the shore of Gitchie Gumee,By the shining Big-Sea-Water,At the doorway of his wigwam,In the pleasant Summer morning,

Hiawatha stood and waited.

All the air was full of freshness,All the earth was right and !oyous,

And efore him through the sunshine,

Westward toward the neighoring forest"assed in golden swarms the Ahmo,

"assed the ees, the honey-ma#ers,

Burning, singing in the sunshine.

Bright ao$e him shown the hea$ens,%e$el spread the la#e efore him&

'rom its osom leaped the sturgeon,

Apar#ling, flashing in the sunshine&(n its margin the great forest

Stood reflected in the water,
