Product Design Construction Features

Composite Material

After years of study and review, KIM engineers have developed a blend of materials, including glass fibers, to produce a superior composite material perfect for an in-ground ballast box. As with all composite materials, exposure to UV radiation must be minimized. Consequently, a solid cast bronze cover seals the unit and protects the composite material from UV degradation.

PREMIUM QUALITY MATERIALS

Brass, Copper and Bronze

The design, manufacture and finishing of copper and bronze fixtures is a craft that dates back eight decades at Kim. Constructed of the ultimate materials for corrosion resistance, brass, copper and bronze fixtures are offered in a hand applied verde patina, or unfinished to allow natural aging.

Aluminum

Whether cast, spun or extruded, only the most durable low copper (<0.6% Cu) aluminum alloys are used in Kim landscape products. Extra heavy wall thickness is engineered into every component for increased strength, and each aluminum fixture receives an eight-stage powder coat paint finish.

PRODUCTION AND ASSEMBLY

Kim products are manufactured with the latest computer automated machinery. Rigid inspection is performed by quality control staff to assure conformance to engineering specifications. Final assembly is performed by dedicated individuals who support the Kim heritage of uncompromising quality.

PERFORMANCE

Kim landscape luminaires are engineered to use the latest HID lamp technology. This assures maximum performance with minimum energy consumption.Kim design philosophy emphasizes the creation of lighting effects and the harmony of fixture aesthetics with the surrounding landscape.

FINISHING

Eight-Stage Powder Coat (Aluminum Fixtures)

All Kim aluminum fixtures are finished with an eight-stage powder coat paint process. The key element of this finish is the Titanated Zirconium conversion coating, known as the best preparation for paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. This same pretreatment is used by the automotive industry.Components in direct contact with soil or water are provided additional corrosion protection by clear anodizing prior to Titanated Zirconium conversion coating.Following the pretreatment process, a Super TGIC powder coat is applied to all fixture surfaces. Super TGIC powder is specially formulated to be both mechanically durable and fade resistant.

Hand-Applied Verde (Brass, Copper, and Bronze Fixtures)

The formula and application procedure for Kim’s acid etched verde green patina was developed by the founder of Kim Lighting seven decades ago.The proprietary finish is hand applied to selected copper and bronze fixtures to simulate the natural patina that develops on these materials after years of exposure to sun and moisture. Hand application assures a uniform appearance.1

1A Note About Verde Patina Finishes

The Kim verde finish is an accelerated aging process duplicating the natural verde that forms on copper and bronze after extended exposure to outside air and humidity. Like natural verde, Kim verde is not permanent and will undergo considerable change depending on location and environment.Verde can be worn away by rain, sprinklers, or surrounding wind-blown foliage. New verde will eventually form depending on humidity levels and the presence of airborne salts.

Natural Weathering of Brass, Copper, and Bronze

When exposed to the normal humidity and particulate matter in outside air, fixtures composed of natural, unfinished brass, copper, or bronze will rapidly age to a rich bronze color, and may develop areas of verde patina. In general, patina forms best when the fixture is exposed to high humidity, frequent wetting and drying, or when airborne salts are present.

Die-cast throughout for precise durability and great looks.Die-casting produces the most accurate components and tightest fitment between gaskets and mating surfaces. Die-casting also produces fine production of great looking detail. The Scarab Series utilizes a modular design with a unified appearance between several different lamp options. In aluminum or brass, the Scarab Series is as durable as it is attractive.

J" Stainless Steel fasteners used throughout to provide easy lamp access through years of service. Black oxide finish.

Integrated die-cast hood creates a rigid lens ring for superior gasket integrity, while providing a rugged glare shield.

Molded Tempered glass lens withcontinuous silicone gasket provides superior sealing.

Die-cast lamp housing provides rigid base for gasketing and lens mount.

Silicone seal and four fasteners between the lamp housing and swivel body insure a leak-free assembly.

Nickel plated medium base screw shell and high quality electrical components provide reliable performance.

J" Stainless Steel knuckle screw provides a solid connection between the die-cast socket shell and swivel mount. Black oxide finish.

Fine locking teeth provide a wide range of vertical aiming with a positive lock that won’t slip or break away. Integral gasket seals knuckle.

Stainless Steel set screw positively locks the swivel to assure horizontal aiming is maintained.

Silicone O-ring gasket seals the base swivel to prevent moisture penetration into electrical junction box and socket housing.

Unique swivel mount allows fixture to be rotated horizontally without affecting the threaded mount to the electrical box cover or mounting option. This assures a weather tight seal and positive aiming that won’t slip or move after setting.

Scarab™ Exceptional Adaptability U.S. Patent D424,731

Accent Lighting for Landscape and Architecture presents many opportunities and challenges. It can produce visual impact, impart drama, and provide a sense of security. However, concealing the fixtures and eliminating glare can be difficult.

Products in several styles are often combined, creating a daytime eyesore of mixed luminaire shapes and detailing that is distracting and often requires different maintenance activities for each fixture type.

The Scarab Series combines integrated design and application flexibility to produce a landscape accent system that meets the broadest range of illumination needs. Based on more than 70 years of experience in landscape accent lighting, Kim’s Scarab Series presents a uniquely classic style, combined with a wide range of lamping options, to produce a single package solution.

The Scarab Series is a feature rich collection, rendered in both Brass and Aluminum. The unique swivel mount provides superior aiming without loosening over time. Die-cast construction produces accurate and finely detailed components with a quality “feel” unattainable with other fabrication methods. While Aluminum provides excellent value and rugged service, Brass offers the longest lasting product with the added bonus of natural weathering that blends into the landscape surround.

Capable of performing so many different lighting duties, the Scarab Series may well be the only luminaires needed. The frustration of mixing and matching products to attain desired results is eliminated, as the Scarab satisfies diverse accent requirements in a uniform styling package.

PATH LIGHTS

These fixtures produce a circular pattern of light that issymmetrical about the luminaire. A typical quadrant, or one-quarter of the light pattern, is shown for these fixtures to allow maximum size and readability.

The typical quadrant is shown in plan view with the fixture in the lower-right corner. Initial horizontal footcandle values appear on the right at specified distances from the luminaire.

COOL-LENS WELL LIGHT

ACCENT LIGHTS

Based on photometric tests on each fixture, the data is converted to a beam spread chart to show values as they might be applied to an actual task.

Beam spread: This value is as specified by the lamp manufacturer.

Beam pattern: The pattern shown is based on the fixture’s performance at 50% of the maximum value. This is generally regarded as the most useful beam width that will produce acceptable uniformity of illumination.

Initial Footcandles: These values are the illumination levels at the beam center (0°) at various distances from the fixture.

On the beam centerline, footcandle values are shown at various distances from the fixture. Since the beam edge (dashed line) is 50% of the centerline value, the footcandles at the edge would be 50% of the number shown in the center.

Beam Width:

This included angle, sym metrical about the centerline, is construc-ted by drawing a dashed line through the candlepower curve at 50% of the useful beam width that will produce acceptable uniformity of illumination.

Safety and Maintenance

1. Fixtures must be grounded in accordance with national, state, and/or local codes. Failure to do so may result in serious personal injury.

2. Extreme caution should be taken when fixtures are used in paved areas. High temperature lenses can burn feet, hands or objects inadvertently placed on top of fixtures. If fixtures must be used in paved areas, locate them away from normal pedestrian traffic, and use the lowest wattage lamp possible.

3. It is recommended that all conduit entries be sealed with RTV silicone to maintain a clean, dry splice compartment.

4. To maintain light efficiency and prevent fixture overheating, lenses must be kept clean and free of dirt, dust, leaves and trash.

KIM LIGHTING 55

Cool-Lens Well Light Lens Temperature Guidelines

Kim Lens Temperature Guidelines:After considering the Cautions stated above, select the appropriate Lamp/Lens/Fixture Position for the application, based on the Temperature Chart at right. Specifiers must consider any local codes that may apply to this type of fixture application, and owners should consider factors such as maintenance. For example, if the primary lens is allowed to accumulate dirt or any other film that restricts light transmission, heat will build and the lens temperature will rise above stated levels. In general, Kim Lighting suggests the following guidelines for Lens Temperature:1. 55°C Maximum. Use for applications that meet all conditions stated in the “CAUTION” above and meet the Lens Temperature Guidelines above.2. 43°C Maximum. Use for applications where there is any degree of uncertainty about meeting the conditions stated in the “CAUTION” above or the guidelines above.3. Do Not Use. If you have any apprehensions about using a fixture of this type in a pedestrian area, Kim Lighting recommends that you consider using one of the many above-grade products in the Kim line.

NOTE: Use same lens temperatures for same wattage HPS or MV lamps. Eg. 100W MH = 100W HPS = 100W MV.

CAUTION:Two important factors should be considered when locating below-grade luminaires in pedestrian areas where the potential exists that human skin might come in contact with the glass lenses: 1) Potential frequency of contact. 2) Potential duration of contact. There are no universal guidelines for the application of below-grade luminaires in pedestrian areas. Numerous studies exist on “recommended maximum temperatures for touchable surfaces”, and healthy adult human skin is known to burn if it reaches a temperature of 43°C (109°F). The key word is “reaches”, because duration of contact is a key factor. For example, if you touch a surface that is 200°C, the burn will be instant before reflex actions cause you to pull away. On the other hand, if you touch a surface that is 43°C, it may take hours for a burn to occur. Kim Lighting has taken the position that we must set the application standards for this product based on our extensive

experience in outdoor lighting, and actual Kim lab tests. Therefore, we strongly suggest the following guidelines:

1. Always locate fixtures out of the normal pedestrian path to minimize contact. Example: In-line with trees or columns, or very close to the building or column, where pedestrian traffic is not normal.

2. Extreme caution should be used for projects where Children, the Elderly, or the Disabled may come in contact with these fixtures. Significantly lower temperature limits must be considered for this group.

3. Follow the Lens Temperature Guidelines provided by Kim. Select and specify the correct Lamp/Lens/Fixture Position to achieve the appropriate lens temperature for the application. See below.
