Architects have always been asked to breathe new life into ancient architectures inherited from the past or into historical – often monumental – artifacts that no longer respond to the customs and needs of the contemporary society.

Nevertheless, the ancient architectures tell our story, there-fore deserve to be restored with interventions that bring along a hint of modernity and show the trace of the design activity. The “Architecture for Heritage” course has been created on these premises. Its aim is training designers who will be able to un-derstand and enhance the memory of historical architectures and take inspiration from them to carry out new interventions that both meet the new needs and are enriched by the link to the past. In a close dialogue between the ancient and the modern, between existing architectures and new interventions, it is possible to comprehend what has been and what is now, redesigning – through architecture – a historical line bound to be continued by future generations.

The students will learn about the most advanced survey strategies and redesign of historical architectures; therefore, they will be able to protect the ancient wonders without giving up on a contemporary approach to the project. They will acquire skills and experience in a field of design that is always present and offers continuous and valuable job opportunities.

The students will analyze the technical and compositional strategies to adopt in contexts that host outstanding existing architectures through the intervention on archaeological and industrial sites and focusing mainly on the accommodation and cultural use of historical buildings. The course will be made up of 106 hours of lessons, a 32-hour workshop and multiple lectures by well-renowned professional architects. At the end of the lessons, the students will be granted an internship.

The course will focus on raising awareness in the students and improving their interpretation of the historical value of the architectural heritage. Through an overview on the meanings and technolo-gical features of different historical eras - passed on through the analysis on interventions on prestigious architectural artifacts - the students will learn how to detect and enhance the main traits of history of each architecture. Through a reflection on different archi-tectural approaches regarding the re-interpretation of existing architectural heritage, the students will learn about the numerous techniques for documents analysis (from archives to historical texts) in order to better comprehend the renovation process and the search for historical events hidden among the elements of historical architectures.

Production buildings represent a good portion of the abandoned historical heritage. Industrial archi-tectures – functional to a specific economic structure or production chain – are more subject to obsolescen-ce, although they carry an inestimable historical and prestigious value. Several “industrial archaeologies” represented an opportunity to create some of the most noble and notable examples of repurposing of abandoned historical artifacts. The current practices include the adoption of an integrated strategy from the adaptive re-use to the storytelling and they must deal with the macro themes of environmental sustai-nability and heritage promotion. Thanks to suitable cultural references and a typological analysis of the historical features of different production plants, the students will have the tools to properly tackle some of the most recurring topics of intervention and re-purposing.

Historical architectures, more than others, present very complex representation and survey challenges to designers. Thanks to this course, the students will gain familiarity with the most advanced survey and digital modeling techniques for prestigious architectural ar-tifacts. Besides a necessary overview and introduction on the basic knowledge needed to use such techno-logy, the course will give the students the opportunity to practically carry out a survey though laser scanner 3D on a drone, process the detected data and create accurate and efficient 3D models.

The course will focus on how to integrate histo-rical architectures with contemporary interventions, through a conscious and appropriate use of materials and technologies. The course will offer an aesthe-tical, technical and performative description of different solutions and materials, including through visits to some sector’s leading companies (systems, lighting, surfacing, cladding, etc.). The course will also explore the methods for selection of materials and technologies according to performance, bud-get, specific architectural artifacts and designer’s sensitivity. Therefore, the course will show different materials applications relevant to the intervention on historical architectures. The course will also include the planning of the design texture to use for the workshop topic.

The course will focus on the principles of necessity and elaboration of the architectural idea, displaying several strategies for the production of an original concept which is able, to generate a powerful aesthetic impact in the observer. The teaching ses-sions will deepen - through the methodologies of contemporary art - the emotional analysis of places, the human modes of action, landscape interactions and the evolutionary principles of cities. They will offer the students some reading and interpretation strategies of the contaminated and indefinite universe of daily life, aiming at strengthening or promoting the unique creative tension of each student in a way that allows to identify innovative expressive methods with which they may tell original and fascinating architectural stories.

The course will focus on different strategies for su-stainability - both passive and active - to carry out in the specific cases of intervention on existing meaningful hi-storical architectures. The challenge of the optimization, both performative and energetic, becomes very com-plex when applied to historical architectures which require particular precaution and specific technolo-gies that allow to reach high standards of performance whilst preserving the integrity and morphological fea-tures of the artifacts. Therefore, not only will the course analyse the most appropriate technological solutions present on the market, but will also focus on how to enhance the features inherent to the architectural heritage in order to respond naturally to the modern requests of environmental sustainability.

Art has always been a tool to re-activate and give life back to the historical heritage. Installations, exhi-bitions and site specific interventions are the means thanks to which the repurposing – be it temporary or permanent – is achieved. As a matter of fact, art is not only an attractive content of spaces that no longer respond to their original function – process of musealization –, but it is also a useful language to give a new meaning to the architectures, tran-sforming ruins in works of art and the abandonment condition in a priviledged background for refined art events. Through some case studies of repurposing of historical architectures, the students will learn new methods and opportunities for a non-functional recovery of abandoned architectural artifacts.

The renovation of architectural heritage not only has to do with preserving historical or protected artifacts, but is an opportunity to express the best contemporary architecture and carry out the renovation of whole parts of a city. The greatest masters of all times have faced this amazing challenge: the analysis of their action will teach the students how to excellently make the best use of their design ability. Therefore, the course will give the students a series of cultural references that may help them develop their creativity. Through the analysis of some realized architectures (carried out thanks to the concerning designers), the students will be given an overview on the main and most famous ar-chitectures which sprung from a refined dialogue with history.

GIANANDREA GAZZOLA

Gianandrea Gazzola is an artist whose activity, since his education, has a strong interdisciplinary fo-otprint. He is engaged in fields like scenography, music and design, but he finds his main means of expression in the visual arts and in-stallation sectors. His work focuses on the relationship between different aspects of perception, in particular sound and shape, then extending the interest to the relationship between natural phenomena as water, wind and clouds. The works “lo stilo” and “infinitum”, which have been realized in Arte Sella from 2013 to 2018, are attributable to this area. ‘Time’ in its historical concreteness is another key element of his crea-tive career. In 2018 he realized two installations on the topic of water in the sixteenth-century Botanical Garden of Padua. Other installations were realized in collaboration with “Spazi Consonanti” in “Certosa di Padula” and at the “Baths of Titus” of Castel Sant’Angelo. His research and design activities in collaboration with “Spazi Consonanti” include some interventions within historic monuments as the Coliseum, minor centers as the ancient cistern of Seggiano sull’Amiata and the ruins of Pompeii.

ANDREA ZAMBONIZamboni Associati Architettura

He studies Architecture at the Academy of Mendrisio and at the University of Ferrara, where he graduates with a thesis with Peter Zumthor and Vittorio Savi. He is a lecturer in Architectural Design at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna. He authored numerous essays and publication and has curated various exhibitions on contemporary and 20th century architecture. Since 2013, he is a member of the Studies Center of Domus magazine (directed by Nicola Di Battista) and has contributed to founding “Domus Africa”, which he now directs. He is a member of the scientific board of the Master in “Design of excellence for historical cities” of the University Federico II of Naples and has co-founded Zam-boni Associati Architettura.

Intervening on the existing historical heritage often requires a paying attention to the redistribution and reconfiguration of the interiors. With this course, the students will learn the main methodologies for interior design, intended both as a transformation compatible to the historical pre-existence (valori-sation and protection of the existence) and as a the choice of suitable furniture and complementaries for the charachter of the building but also for the needs of the client. Through the analysis of prestigious interior projects, the students will tackle the topics of design (composition/distribution) and of complemen-tary furnishing (in terms of materials, production, standardization and costs). At the end of the course, the students will gain a series of notions that they can use to work on any interior design project from the concept to calculation.

The workshop will offer the students the opportu-nity to bring together all the theoretical notions learnt during the course, in order to offer strategic solutions concerning a real design case. The course will be carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Bolognola and Agenzia del Demanio. The students will be given the opportunity to work on the area of Bolognola, a little village located in the seismic basin of the 2016 earthquake, with the opportunity to find in the wounds the elements to turn the little hamlet into a major international example of post-calamity repurposing and re-activation, joining historical heri-tage to contemporary architecture. Bolognola, one of the main ski destinations in the center of Italy with an astonishing natural landscape, is the perfect back-ground where to develop designs that link memory and contemporary times. In order to be able to get to know the site better, the students will be spending three days of visits and lessons in Bolognola.
