It’s normal to feel overwhelmed about your new responsibilities as a parent. Bayfront Baby Place is here to help you from childbirth education to infant CPR and baby care basics. The more you learn, the more confident you’ll feel about taking care of your newborn.

NICUGiving birth to a child is a wonderful experience. However, giving birth to a child prematurely can be very stressful and worrisome. At Bayfront Health Port Charlotte, premature infants stay right by their mother. Our on-site neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) allows us to provide the best care for your newborn.

Bayfront Health operates a state-approved, level III, regional perinatal intensive care center, one of only 11 in all of florida. This is the highest level of technology and expertise available to newborns who need special care and is located in St. Petersburg. Level II NICU’s are available at both Port Charlotte and Spring Hill. Port Charlotte is affiliated with all Children’s Neonatology/Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Our NICU features:• State-of-the-art equipment to care for premature

or ill newborns• Individual rooms, or pods, with the latest in

technology to allow the infant to grow naturallywhile remaining bonded with their family

• A breastfeeding room to assist and counsel mothers• An on-site neonatologist with All Children’s

Specialists-Johns Hopkins Medicine

To find out more about our NICU, visit BayfrontBabies.com.

MILK DEPOTWe’re making it easier than ever for moms to donate their breast milk.A milk depot is a controlled collection point where women can donate their breast milk for premature babies. The donations are then transferred to Mothers’ Milk Bank of Florida, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, who collect, screen, process and pasteurize the donations to in turn provide breast milk to the most fragile infants who would otherwise have to drink formula. Now, moms can donate right here in Charlotte County!

Local moms interested in donating their breast milk can start the screening process by calling the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Florida at 407-248-5050 or visiting MilkBankOfFlorida.org. Once approved, you can bring your frozen milk to Bayfront Baby Place’s Milk Depot, which accepts donations Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Learn more by visiting BayfrontBabies.com.

The more you learn, the more confident you’ll feel

Medications, Substances and StimulantsPotential risks during pregnancy

Babies can be affected by medications, substances and stimulants mothers take during pregnancy, and some can affect your baby even AFTER birth.

Research shows that these substances can affect your baby during AND after birth:

CaffeineCaffeine is a stimulant that affects your baby justlike it affects you. If you drink a lot of caffeinatedbeverages, like coffee or soda, while pregnant, yourbaby may have the same reactions as when youstop drinking caffeine. When exposed to moderateto high levels of caffeine, babies can experiencetremors, increased heart rate, loose stools, intensefussiness, and crying that cannot be calmed. Expertsrecommend that pregnant women should not drinkmore than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day—theamount in one cup of coffee.

NicotineNicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco smoke.Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicalsthat can reach your baby when you smoke duringpregnancy. Nicotine and carbon monoxide reduceoxygen to your unborn baby, causing low birth weightand possible pre-term labor or death. Nicotineconcentrates in your unborn baby’s blood andamniotic fluid. It also concentrates in your breastmilk. After birth, your baby may exhibit symptoms ofwithdrawal that include tremors, intense fussinessand inconsolable crying.
