• In order to solve all kind of numerical problems, “MechanicalCalculators” were created.

Pascaline (1642). Created by Pascal to help his fatherit was focused solving commercial arithmetic problems. Itcould add and subtract directly and multiply and divide byrepetition.

Stepped Reckoner (1694.) By Gottfried Leibniz. Basedon the Leibniz Wheel.

1860 - 1929 was an statician

• He developed a mechan-ical tabulator based onpunched cards.

• A punch card represents aperson.

• Each punch was a charac-teristic for this person.

• He used machines to tab-ulate and sort the punchcards.

The census of 1890 was finished months ahead and far underbudget.

Having the hardware, we need specific software which can be usedin HPC computers.

• The first codes running on supercomputers were simple toparallelize. Crays where vectorial computers.

• HPC architectures changes in the 90’s Vectorial Processors→ Serial Processors New parallel programming paradigms.

• Many codes where adapted to be run in this HPC hardwarewith this new programming paradigms. Their performance wasnot very good due to the old code parts.

• Others, where created from scratch including more efficientalgorithms optimized to be run on thousand of processors.

It is crucial to collaborate between scientist, computer scien ceengineers and mathematicians to analyze the old codes and

adapt them to this new technologies.
