It has been a challenging year

First time that European Championships same year as OG

First time that European Athletes and Head Coaches had to plan the season with two peak moments. Helsinki & London

First time European Championships coincides with many major events


A dense and heavy calendar!2. Reflection of 2012


Why we decided to have European Championships every 2 years?

Decision of big majority of European MFs at Ljubliana Congress

Need to have more European competitions under National vests

Need to increase viewers of European Athletics

Need to create new European athletes heroes and not to wait 4 years for it in order to fight the increasing influence of American and African athletes

Need to increase finantially in order to support all European athletics activities

European Championships in the Olympic Year 2012

- Reflection from a European Point of View -




Point of Departure:

In the course of the debate about the introduction of the 2012 European Championships, concerns were expressed by the high performance leaders (Head Coaches, Performance Directors, etc) of the European federations.

Their concerns were primarily about successful training preparation towards the Olympics.

Taking into consideration the course of the 2012 season up to the European Championships in Helsinki, we see that the federations took different approaches.



Point of Departure:

There were federations that deemed the European Championships as an important and binding step for their top athletes on the way to the Olympic Games.

Some federations let their potential Olympic medallists decide by themselves whether they wanted to participate in the European Championships or not.

Russia and Slovenia decided not to take part with the potential medallists.

As to the scheduling of the national championships we saw different options.

150 seasonal bests = 15,7 %

70,9 % of the participants did not accomplish the minimum target, their seasonal best.

In business they would call such a ratio a catastrophe!

On average only 29.1% of European athletes „delivered“ in London.

Why did the European women deliver better than the men?

Why are the Americans and Jamaicans delivering better than the Europeans?

Is it the fault of the ECH?

What implications does this have for our performance management and coaching systems?

1. Why did some of your top athletes not compete in Helsinki ECH2012?

Main reasons: - Injured athletes and risk of injury for top athletes - Athletes and coaches own decision to participate - ECH not mandatory for OGs qualification - Too close to NCH or Trials - Different system in OGs and ECH concerning Q rounds (eg. SP) - Traditional and successful training conceptions (RUS) - Climate problem and late start of season

CONCLUSIONS Group B


• Nearly all top athletes took part, with the exception of those injured.

• Some of the top athletes competing in different disciplines than their «normal» events. i.e. Combined events athletes.

• Coach perception is also an important factor



2. Why did the americans and the jamaicans deliver better in London than the Europeans?

• School system

• Volume of athletes

• Different start to the season

• Event based success (sprints vs technical events)

• The trial system removes the doubts about selection and can help with the mental preparation for the top events.

• System of performance management



3. Considering the data given about WJCH, do you consider that World/European Junior Championships should be questioned?

• Keep the junior championships, important to be attractive vs other sports for the young.

• Dont need the youth championships.

• Need a careful balance

• All of them competed with top athletes with the exception of injuries and top junior focused on world junior championships.

• Mentality in athletes and coaches: European athletes focus more on training than competing

• North american and caribean athletes start competing earlier and compete continously which prepare them better for the Olympic games

• Mistakes at technical events is more likely than in non technical events

• Some European athletes compete with injuries



3. Considering de data given about WJCH, do you consider that World/European Junior Championships should be questioned?

• The whole group is in favor of keeping the juniors championships as it is a step of development and not a final objective.
