Bitumen and the EnvironmentBituminous waterproofing systems protect the building from the severe effects of exposure to the elements, conserving the economic value of the property and increasing its serviceable life. One of the principal environmental benefits associated with bitumen is that it is a non-ecologically toxic product that presents no danger to human, plant and aquatic environments.

With exceptional longevity, durability and unique mechanical characteristics, bitumen production waste can be recycled and returned to the manufacturing process to produce new membranes. This reduces the consumption of raw materials and our dependence on landfill.

Bituminous membranes constitute a sustainable method of achieving significant carbon storage and generate no greenhouse gases. Bitumen is not classified as a hazardous or carcinogenic material with objective cradle to grave life cycle analysis concluding that bituminous systems

BRE Green Guide to SpecificationThe BRE Green Guide to Specification is part of BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), an accredited environmental rating scheme for buildings and their elemental construction.

The ratings are based on Life Cycle assessments using BRE’s Environmental Profiles Methodology 2008 and enable designers to compare and select appropriate materials as they compile their specifications. Under this assessment method the complete specification (supporting structure, thermal insulation and waterproofing elements) is evaluated under environmental criteria such as impact of manufacture, recycling potential, implementation within the building, maintenance and end of life disposal.

A typical FORCE LINE bituminous membrane roofing system will achieve a BRE Green Guide rating of A+ (BRE Green Guide to Specification 2008). Green Guide ratings will vary according to individual specification and although Axter can give advice on the elemental value of a construction, a BRE assessor should be employed to ascertain project specific BRE Green Guide ratings.

QualityAxter has been manufacturing SBS polymer modified reinforced bituminous membranes for over 30 years and specialises in protecting buildings and the environment from the severe effects of the weather. Axter’s manufacturing sites are amongst the most technologically advanced in Europe and are independently assessed by AFAQ and quality assured to ISO 9001:2008.

InstallationFORCE LINE has been designed for application via heat welding torch-on techniques without the need for bitumen boilers. This gives improved installation times, saving money without compromising the bond strength, performance and durability of the waterproofing. In today’s demanding construction environment it is also necessary to provide a varied system range adaptable to any design and construction brief. FORCE LINE can incorporate self-adhesive / heat activated vapour control layers and underlayer membranes to reduce the risk of fire and further promote safety conscious installation methods.

FORCE LINE systems must be installed by accredited roofing professionals, preferably Axter Alliance (AA) installers, trained to at least NVQ level 2 with all supervisors having achieved at least NVQ level 3 or equivalent. This safeguards installation quality and the completion of a successful project.

DesignAXTER is an established global waterproofing system designer and manufacturer and as part of the design team will ensure all local regulations are complied with and industry good practice is accomplished.

FORCE LINE roofing systems must be designed and installed in accordance with BS 8217:2005 Reinforced bitumen membranes for roofing – Code of practice and BS 8747:2007 Reinforced bitumen membranes (RBMs) for roofing – Guide to selection and specification.

FireFORCE LINE bituminous membranes conforming to Table 5 of The Building Regulations 2010, Approved Document B Fire Safety are deemed to be of designation AA (National class) or Broof(t4) (European class).

BS 8747:2007 Reinforced bitumen membranes (RBMs) for roofing – Guide to selection and specification Clause 4.6.10 External Fire Performance states “The current toughest regulatory requirement under the UK Building Regulations is for an AC rating, when tested to BS 476-3:2004. In general, this is achieved by self finished mineral or metal foil faced membranes.” FORCE LINE therefore would achieve at least an AC rating.
