Home & Family

By Deanna TurnerKansas State University Research and

Extension

Spring and summer are exciting times of the year. You plant flower seeds and wait for them to come up. You plant tomato plants and watch in anticipation for tomatoes to develop. Another fun aspect is watching birds in your backyard. Fill the bird feeder with sunflower seeds and the hum-mingbird and oriole feeders with sugar water. Watch for all the birds to arrive. Orioles especially like grape jelly put on a dish outside. These pleasures are one way to manage stress in your life.

No matter your age, we all experi-ence stress which can affect us physi-cally. Everyone experiences stress a little differently. While you cannot rid yourself of stress, you can learn to manage it.

The first step in stress manage-ment is to identify the stressors in your life. Are there any stressors you can change by avoiding, reducing exposure to, or eliminating com-pletely? No single method works for everyone or in every situation; there-

fore, it is important to experiment with different stress-reduction strate-gies to lessen your feelings of stress. Focus on what makes you feel calm and in control.

Two common strategies for man-aging stress include changing the sit-uation and changing your response to the situation. If there is a situation you can identify that causes stress, avoid it. For example, if the crowds and chaos of attending an event makes you feel anxious to the point that you do not like to go, stay home. In unavoidable situations, such as a family reunion with a cantankerous relative, you may have to change your reaction. Accept it for what it is, focus on what is really important, adapt to the environment and move on.

Changing the situation is one way to manage stress. Evaluate your phys-ical environment. You may need to paint the color on the walls a different color if it affects your mood. Take a look at the people in your life. Is there a person or a group of people who really cause you stress? If so, you may need to distance yourself or resign from that organization. Review your

calendar. Learn to say “no.” Look at your commitments. Are you over-committing yourself? If so, lessen your commitments if it is hurting your health.

Changing your reaction is anoth-er way to manage stress. Laugh, don’t cry. Some things you just can’t change. These are the things you need to learn to accept instead of letting them bother you. Compro-mise is another strategy. The need to be “right” often interferes with good communication and can cause stress when you are so focused on what the other person is doing. If you ask someone to change, you need to be willing to change yourself. Letting it go is another strategy. Ask yourself, “Does it really matter? Will it matter in five years?” Sometimes you just have to pick your battles.

Set aside time every day to relax. Take a break from all your responsibili-ties and recharge your batteries. Con-nect with other people. Spend time with positive people who enhance your life. Do something you enjoy every day. Keep your sense of humor—including laughing at yourself.

This beautiful home has the look of a country house, with pillars surrounding the front entrance. However, it has one truly unique feature. It is a home that includes an in-law suite on the rear of the home, providing a private entrance.

The entrance to the Tri-Harder (409-26) opens into a large open room that has the dining room on the right in the front, the living room straight back and the kitchen/nook on the rear right. This entire area is vaulted. The room has large windows that provide sunlight to bathe the area. A patio door opens off the living room onto a concrete stoop with a patio beyond.

The kitchen runs along the outside wall on the right with a large walk-in pantry in one corner. There is an island in the middle of the kitchen with an eating bar facing the living room.

The second bedroom is to the left of the front door with a wall closet on one end and large window facing the front of the home. There is a half-bath across the hall that is attached to the master suite bath, both shar-ing a tub between. The master suite has two large windows for light and a long wall closet. The half-bath areas each contain a single sink.

Beyond the bedrooms is the garage. Access to the single car garage is through a door off the living room. To the rear of the

living room is the utility room with the washer and dryer. A door opens in the rear of the util-ity that goes into the in-law suite bathroom. This bath also has a single sink and a tub.

The main suite of the in-law suite is open with a kitchen that runs down the inside wall. It has all the same features of the larger kitchen, only in a smaller version. There is a large closet beside the entry door into the in-law suite that will act as a wall closet for clothes and for guest’s coats.

The living area of the main part of the Tri-Harder is 1,467 square feet while the in-law suite has 423 square of living area. This home has plenty of room for everyone to have quiet, private space and still be near enough in an emergency.

Read Matthew 11:25-30 —Matthew 11:28 (CEB)Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and car-

rying heavy loads, and I will give you a rest.”

As I was picking blueberries one July morning, I watched the heavily laden branches of fruit spring up little by little as the plump, juicy berries were removed. “Ahhh!” The bush seemed to say when its branches no longer hung down to the ground, putting stress on the woody stems. Seeing how the shrubs bowed beneath their substantial loads of berries made me think of Jesus’ promise in today’s verse.

Obviously blueberry bushes don’t suffer from the same type of burdens that humans do. But like blueberry bushes, we can become weak and non-productive as we are weighed down by burdens. When we try to cope with problems all by ourselves, our health and lives are affected by worry, fear, anger, sadness and other destructive emotions. The burdens that weigh us down might be unmanageable work loads, financial worries, marital problems, family issues, illness, alcohol, drugs or even problems within our church family. Like the blueberry bush, we need help in shedding our load. When we are weary, we can trust in Jesus, who promises to give us rest.

Prayer—Heavenly Father, thank you for relieving us of our bur-dens. In Christ’s holy name we pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day—Jesus will give me rest when I give my burdens to him.

The July Fourth holiday will not be a celebration for the 8,600 or so Americans likely to end up in hospital emergency rooms from injuries by fireworks.

“National Fire Protection Association statistics in 2010 (lat-est year available) showed 57 per-cent of those injuries were to the arms and legs and 37 percent were to the head. The injury risk was highest for children ages 5 to 14, with more than twice the risk as for the general population,” said Bob Schultheis, natural resource engineering specialist, University of Missouri Extension.

In addition, the NFPA esti-mated fireworks caused 15,500 reported fires, including 1,100 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires

and 14,100 outside and other fires. These fires resulted in an estimat-ed eight reported civilian deaths, 60 civilian injuries and $36 million in direct property damage in 2010.

A Consumer Products Safety Commission study in 2011 found that nearly half of all fireworks injuries occurred to hands and fingers, and that the top three fireworks for causing injuries were sparklers (17%), reloadable shells (14%), and firecrackers (13%).

“Celebrating Independence Day can be fun for the family, but fireworks are not a toy. Injuries can range from burned fingers and lac-erations to serious disability or loss of vision,” said Schultheis.

‘Consumer fireworks,’ former-ly known as Class C fireworks, are legal in Missouri. Legal age of purchase is 14, unless accom-

panied by a parent or guardian. This class includes bottle rockets, sky rockets, Roman candles, cone and cylindrical fountains, fire-crackers, certain sparklers and revolving wheels. Bottle rockets are the most dangerous for eye injuries; sparklers are the most dangerous for burns.

“Public displays are safest, but if you are having a home fire-works display, please follow these common-sense safety tips,” said Schultheis.

Read and follow all manu-facturer label directions and warning instructions.Always light fireworks outdoors in a clear area on a flat sur-face at least 25 feet away from onlookers, buildings, vehicles and combustible materials.Always supervise older chil-

dren when they are lighting fireworks. Never allow chil-dren under age 10 to play with fireworks, including sparklers. (Sparklers can reach a tem-perature of 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.)Light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting the devices. Never put fireworks in breakable contain-ers like tin cans, clay pots or bottles that may shatter, and never hold fireworks in your hands when lighting them.Do not try to re-light or han-dle malfunctioning fireworks. Keep a bucket of water or a gar-den hose handy for emergen-cies and to douse any fireworks that do not ignite.Do not allow any running or horseplay while fireworks

are being used. Never point or throw fireworks at another person.Keep unused fireworks away from the area where fireworks are being lit, Always store fire-works in a dry, cool place and avoid rough handling that might damage the fuse or handles.Always demonstrate respon-sible behaviors around fire-works, because children may imitate your actions.MU Guide GH6026, “Pro-

tecting Children from Uninten-tional Injuries,” offers safety tips for fireworks. It is available from your county University of Mis-souri Extension Center or online at http://extension.missouri.edu/explore/hesguide/humanrel/gh6026.htm.

Have you been noticing your trees are losing leaves this sum-mer? Well, there are three situa-tions that may be causing your trees to loss their leaves. These situations are caused by low amounts of water and extreme temperatures. None of these situations should kill the trees immediately, but multiple years of the same conditions will have an effect on the overall health of the trees.

The first situation is the tree is producing yellow leaves through-out the whole tree canopy. If the falling leaves are well distributed throughout the tree and result in a general thinning of the leaves, this is not a serious problem. Trees will often set more leaves in the spring than they can sup-port during the summer. Heat and drought stress will cause the tree to lose leaves, due to the avail-able amount of soil moisture. The leaves that drop are most often yellow with no discernible disease spots. However, at times, they can drop green leaves that appear per-fectly healthy. As long as the leaf

drop results in a gradual thinning of the leaves, the tree should be fine; just water the tree during dry periods.

The second situation is all the leaves on a tree are turn-ing yellow and in some cases, virtually all of the leaves could drop off. Certain trees, such as hackberry, can drop all of the leaves and enter summer dor-mancy. We are a bit early for this to occur, but may happen later in the summer if we continue to have hot and dry weather. Trees in summer dormant should have flexible twigs and healthy buds. Usually, the effect on the health

of the tree is minor and the tree leafs out normally next spring. As long as the tree has enough stored energy reserves to make it through to the next spring, it will survive. The twigs and buds of the tree tell the story. If the buds die and the twigs become brittle, that part of the tree is dead.

The last situation is all of the leaves on a tree turn brown and die, but remain attached to the tree. This can happen seemingly overnight. In such cases, the tree couldn’t keep up with moisture demands and died quickly. This year, the cause may be due to the early heat and drought condi-

tions. Like the second situation, the twigs and buds are the most important clues as to the health of the tree. As long as the buds are alive and the twigs are flexible, do not remove the tree, it still has life. If you have limited access to water and you need to choose what to water, water the trees first. They take the longest to grow, are the most difficult to grow, and are the most expensive to replace. Trees Losing Leaves Early This Summer

A Master Gardener nurtures little minds and mouths at Sacred Heart Villa, a preschool in St. Louis.

University of Missouri Master Gardener Margaret Grant teaches preschool students to grow what they eat and eat what they grow. The program is in its second year.

The school sits in the heart of The Hill, a predominantly Italian neighborhood on high ground south of Forest Park. Grant and MU Extension educational program coordinator Holly Records designed the berm gardens in the schoolyard.

“It was such fun helping the teachers and students come up with

themes for several of the gardens,” says Records. There is a Hill garden, dinosaur garden and butterfly gar-den among the named areas.

The school follows the Reggio Emilia approach, a student-driven educational philosophy that began in post-World War II Italy. The approach focuses on encouraging the child’s natural curiosity and potential in less structured settings. This carries over to the gardens.

“The first time I visited Villa, the students and I just dug around in the soil to see what we could find,” Records said. “Besides worms, grubs and a centipede, we found several very special rocks that were quickly deposited in the treasure pile.”

Early this spring, students plant-ed peas in foam cups. They moved the cups from the classroom to a small greenhouse in the schoolyard. They then transplanted the pea vines to one of more than 20 small berms built by parents and volunteers.

Students learn more than just gardening skills. They research the types plants that will do well in St. Louis’ climate. They also choose which herbs to use in their school lunches. Lettuce, peas, tomatoes, figs, grapes, herbs and pollinators are among the diverse offerings.

Each week, students measure and record the growth of their plants, an activity that develops math skills. They hone science skills by learning plant parts. Stu-dents learn to treat their plants like babies in need of nurturing with sun, water and care, says Grant.

She uses gardening as a gateway to teach students to eat healthy and try new foods. “I teach them how to make vegetables taste good,” Grant says. “I want to get them excited about food.”

Records sees the excitement. “Every time I visit Villa with Mar-garet, a child runs up to her and give her a big hug. ‘Are we gardening or cooking today, Miss Margaret?’”

Grant, a professional chef with a master’s degree in environmental sustainability from Webster Univer-sity, also prepares food for children as part of the classroom routine. The St. Louis Chef de Cuisine Asso-ciation funds the cooking-in-the-classroom program.

Recently, she cooked “smashy peas,” one of her grandson’s favor-ites. She cooked peas and added cream and fresh mint. Most of the children are eager to try new foods. A few are reluctant to experiment, committing only to one pea, but that is how healthy eating begins.

Grant connects the gardening and cooking experiences to the stu-dents’ heritage. While serving peas, she asked, “Does your mommy put peas in your tortellini?” She has also served squash-stuffed ravioli and homemade mozzarella. She talks about the food’s color, aroma, tex-ture and taste.

The cooking sessions and gar-

dens give children, parents, teachers and volunteers a sense of school and community pride. Good gardens and good food grow here.

The themed gardens reflect the Italian neighborhood of tidy shotgun-style homes, bakeries and restaurants. Neighborhood resi-dents, including MU Extension Master Gardeners, often volunteer to mentor children about the fig trees that grow in the school gar-den. Italian immigrants brought the trees to The Hill from Italy after World War II.

Neighbors offer advice on herbs and tomatoes for sauces. A restau-rant owner donated garlic bulbs for planting. Grapevines, commonly seen growing in the backyards of Hill homes, provide opportunities for older residents to teach younger ones and share memories.

Students, teachers and adminis-trators hope to offer a small farmers market for local residents and res-taurants. Students attending summer camps maintain the gardens during their peak growing time. They also enjoy snacks and lunches made with fruits and vegetables at peak flavor.

Sacred Heart Villa students and teachers share their experiences via Skype with preschool students at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Impe-rial, Missouri. They have a “friendly competition” to see which garden is blessed with the most produce, says Sister Jude Ruggeri, who grew up in the neighborhood.

“It’s wonderful in lots of ways,” she says. “It teaches the children to take time to view the flowers and plants and enjoy.”

Records says the St. Louis Mas-ter Gardener program, including the Villa program, shows urban residents how to grow their own food even with limited space. The classes also bring together a diverse group of people interested in healthy eating. This year’s class of St. Louis Master Gardeners includes three physicians, a concert violinist, a tattoo artist, an oncologist, a stand-up comedian and the owner of a small hardware store.

Tips for gardening with children

Of all the things found grow-ing in a garden, kids are by far the most important, says University of Missouri Extension horticul-turist David Trinklein, who offers these tips:

Let youngsters feel a sense of ownership of their part of the garden space. Label it with their name.Kids love digging in the dirt. Let youngsters take part in soil preparation.Nothing builds confidence like success. Choose garden plants that are started from seeds and fairly easy to grow. Radishes, carrots and lettuce are good choices.Incorporate some “easy” flow-ers such as zinnia and marigold into the garden plan so kids can pick bouquets to take to their families.Kids love to water. Make it a part of their garden chores. Keep an eye out to make sure it is done properly.Consider planting theme gar-dens such as salsa or salad gar-dens. This will give children a sense of where their food comes from.Make the best of time spent with youngsters in the garden by visiting about other things as well. In addition to talking about birds, insects and weeds, talk with children about their friends, school experiences, hopes and dreams.Don’t let a lack of space dis-courage you. Container gar-dens on a deck or patio can be a learning experience for children also. Grandparents, and parents who share custo-dy, can still garden with little ones through photos on social media. Plant vegetables or flowers at the same time and share notes by telephone or Skype on how your garden is progressing.

Friday, June 15We have had a little bit of every-

thing going on around here late-ly—moving cattle, hauling cattle, planting cotton, custom farming…you name it! We were finally able to kick off our harvest season. We also have the privilege of hosting a great group of guys from the Okla-homa Baptist Homes for Children.

Our first harvest stop was west of Durham, Oklahoma, in Hemphill County, Texas. This is wheat that we grow and we felt very fortunate to have any wheat to harvest, as many of our friends and neighbors suffered from sig-nificant drought and hail damage. We knew we were not looking at a bumper crop by any means, but have been pretty pleased with the outcome. Yields have been in the mid-20s, 61.5 pound test weight and 13.4 percent protein. It seemed just as soon as we were up and run-

ning, we were done!Earlier on June 9, we were glad

to welcome the Oklahoma Bap-tist Homes for Children. The guys were eager to get in the tractor and combines—and we just loved that. During their visit, John Deere Har-vest Support stopped by to take a look at the guidance system on one of our machines. The timing could not have been more perfect! One of the boys was particularly interested in computer technology, and for

him to get to see the technician plug his laptop into the combine just made my heart happy! He also took the time to visit with the boys about the role John Deere Harvest Support plays on the harvest trail.

The guys had a great opportu-nity to see first-hand the vital role that John Deere Harvester Works plays in harvest season.

I would like to thank all of the guys on our crew—Jason, Jon, Jim, Danny and Cody—for taking the

time to show the boys the ropes. Thanks also to Jim, Don and Mike for bring-ing the boys out to our neck of the woods. We truly enjoyed our time with them.

I would encourage you to check out the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children website www.obhc.org. They care for over 200

residents at their facilities. The opportunities they provide to these boys are incredible and they could always use your help!

Monday, June 18Not that long ago, the wheat

crop was several weeks behind schedule. With strong winds and hot temperatures, nature has kicked in gear in a big way, and crops have made up ground in terms of maturity.

As the kids and I traveled across U.S. Highways 50 and 160 in Kan-sas on June 15, combines of all colors, makes and models could be seen in their natural habitat doing what they do best.

We have been cutting just a few miles inside the Colorado border in the south east corner of the state. We don’t have any official stats at the time of this posting, but it looks like yields so far are in the 30-plus bushel per acre range. Our farmer is pleased with the results.

With precipitation usually under 20 inches per year (accord-ing to NOAA), it can be tough to raise a good crop out here. One way our farmer fights this issue

is to incorporate a fallow sea-son into their

cropping rotation. For our readers who need a brief tutorial, this is the practice of allowing a piece of ground to “rest” for a season. This allows moisture to build up in the soil profile to be used for the next planned crop. It is very important to control weeds in this practice for they can zap the precious moisture from the “bank” and defeat the purpose of the fallow period.

We moved through Texas in record time because it was our first year without any sort of rain delay, and, as we have said before, wheat acres were down due to weather conditions. Our next stop

was Custer County, Oklahoma. Around the Clinton area, things are very dry. Our farmer told us that they are struggling to get their cotton out of the ground due to the drought. It has been a tough few years in that area. The last several have had too much rain and now they’re fighting drought. They also had an April freeze. I was told the field looked nice, but when a per-son went out to check, there wasn’t grain in the head.

As a result, we only had about two days of cutting there, but are thankful because every cutting day counts. The average yield across the

acres we harvested were about 30 bushels an acre. Test weights were 58 to 60 pounds. Mark reported that they had seen yields anywhere from 15 to near 30 bushels an acre.

This location is also droughty and would normally yield closer to 50 bushels an acre.

Monday, June 18Who mows their yard at 11 p.m.?

Me. Thank goodness for headlights on the mower! Actually, it was sort of like cutting wheat at night—a good change from the norm.

I’m certain the neighbors looked out their window once or twice to see what the heck was going on and why in the world is she mow-

ing now? The days before leaving home for the next several months is so stressful. It gets to the point where you’ve just got to be done with the little things you thought needed to be done and leave. Once we get on the road, the stress of leaving is done.

Jim’s busy the whole while pre-paring equipment to get loaded and going through all that he needs to do. It’s always so easy to think what you have to do is more important than the other but it takes both of us to make it work. And that’s it...just the two of us. He has no help getting the equipment ready and most of what I do, I do alone. We both appreciate any help that comes around once in awhile.

We made the first trip to Lyons on Thursday. Once we arrived, we unloaded the service pickup and parked the trucks where they would sit until our return. Then we made our way to Lyons to find a place to park the Cottage on Wheels once we arrived with it and headed north once again.

The wheat has changed a lot over the week that we had been down the first time to visit with our farmer. From southern Nebraska to Lyons, Kansas, it was mostly golden. It looks to me like the entire state of Kansas will be in wheat harvest mode all at the same time. I hear some are even moving into Colorado. It’s no wonder, this 100-degree heat plus the strong

south wind is certainly helping it all ripen quickly.

Jamie and the kids came over yesterday afternoon. Just to hang out. I absolutely love those little guys and it never gets any easier to tell them goodbye. They really don’t understand, yet, that when they told us goodbye yesterday, it probably means months will pass before we get to see them again

The Beast is loaded and waiting for us to return this morning. As soon as all these last minute items get taken care of, we’ll hit the road, join the rest of the gang who have already started the 2018 harvest and go into harvest time mode.

Harvest season’s final prep is finished for Z Crew

Monday, June 18We have been lucky enough

to have wheat to cut and harvest weather lately. We’ve also had south winds 20 to 35 mph for several consecutive days which has allowed us to start earlier in the mornings and cut later into the evenings too.

The wheat has been yielding 45 to 55 bushels per acre with 61-pound test weights. The wind singing Dixie everyday has helped us along. I figure the wind will blow until it rains. We have yet to

get rained out this harvest but there is rain in the forecast. We have come close (within 5 miles) a few times but so far the rain has stayed away from us. Last year it rained everywhere we went. I did cut one field that yielded over 60 bushels per acre. However, it was on sum-mer fallow ground and that makes a big difference.

We had a few combines fin-ish up recently on wheat over in the Pratt, Kansas, area. The wheat

report I got was that it just wasn’t very good there this year due to drought conditions. The wheat was super short and the yields were 5 to 30 bushels per acre and in some fields the weeds had taken over and made a disaster of the crop and made it misery for the cutters. The wheat was just short and full of weeds and was tough cutting.

We now have combines cutting north of Dodge City, Kansas, and the reports are so far so good. The

wheat looks decent and yields have been 40 to 50 bushels per acre. Jared called me and told me the elevator had reported to him that the wheat he was sending in looked very good and is the cleanest wheat they have seen. Coincidentally, we had just gotten the same report from a different elevator about five minutes earlier. We do appreciate the clean grain compliments.
