ot many university presidents teach a class, but Dr. Nido Qubein always proves the exception to the rule and, in fact, teaches two classes. At the age of 17, he came to the U.S. with little money and limited

command of the English language. Since then, his achievements have earned him the Ellis Island Medalof Honor, induction into the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans and placement within the National Speaker’s Association Hall of Fame. Dr. Qubein is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant.

President’s Seminar on Life SkillsThe President’s Seminar on Life Skills is an opportunity for every first-year student to reap the benefits of Dr. Qubein’s lifetime of learning and continual achievement. highpoint.edu/presidentseminar

“ High Point University has strengthened the confidence that I have in myself and my dreams by pushing me outside of my comfort zone and challenging me to be a better student, leader, friend and young professional. I had the privilege of being accepted to my number one choice Physical Therapy school, and I wholeheartedly attribute that moment of success to the stellar faculty members, innovative facilities and unceasing inspiration that HPU has offered me during my time here.”

—Nicole Karlesky; Exercise Science major; from Charlotte, NC; Medical University of South Carolina

“ Because of HPU’s location and proximity to downtown High Point, I’ve been able to build my résumé based on High Point Furniture Market positions (one with High Point Market Authority and most recently the showroom, Codarus) and with two internships: Barbour Spangle Design in High Point and June DeLugas Interiors in Clemmons, NC. Receiving a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design was one of the most important factors

in choosing which college I attended.” —Michelle Scirica; Interior Design major; from Smithtown, NY; Rogers Design Group

Successful Young Alumni

“ High Point University’s Phillips School of Business Selling Club helped to introduce me to Aetna at the International Collegiate Sales Competition (ICSC) in Orlando, Fla. this past November. I utilized the career fair during my junior year to secure an internship that provided me with valuable job-related and personal tools which I still use today.”

—Marcus Cromwell; Business Administration major; from Edgewater, MD; Aetna

“ High Point really does live up to its mission statement — an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people. I was able to pursue my dream of a double major in Biology and Mathematics because of these three qualities. My professors constantly supported and challenged me in and outside the classroom. The facilities and classrooms I had access to encouraged me to do my best and refine my skills. The small undergraduate research program at HPU opened my eyes to a whole other world — one that I am now going into as I begin my future at a research intensive Ph.D. program at Vanderbilt University. Every dream, including mine, is feasible at HPU.”

—Andrea Perreault; Biology and Mathematics major; from Neshanic Station, NJ; Vanderbilt University

Ken Fobian was selected as the first place winner and recipient of $7,000 for his business plan, Resistance LLC, at HPU’s fifth annual Business Plan Competition. “I have that entrepreneurial passion and I have always wanted to start my own company,” says Fobian. “I am going to pursue the company upon graduating and it feels great that all of the hard work paid off. I am grateful for the help from everyone at HPU and the motivation from my friends and family. This is a huge help and a big step. I am very excited.” —Ken Fobian; Business major; from Oakland, NJ; Resistance, LLC

An Inspiring EnvironmentThe Center for Student Success The Center for Student Success houses the offices of Career & Internship Services, Undergraduate Research and Creative Works and First Year Success Coaches. The programs are focused to help students on their college journey and beyond as they possibly start a business, prepare for graduate school or begin their career path.

Human Biomechanics and Physiology LabHPU’s Human Biomechanics and Physiology Lab is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. With state-of-the-art equipment and a 13,150-square-foot facility, the lab is capturing national attention. The lab’s equipment includes a 24-camera motion analysis system, an environmental chamber that allows for temperature and altitude change, a DEXA scanner for bone density testing and an anti-gravity treadmill. This equipment allows for students to be involved in groundbreaking, high-impact research in the areas of injury prevention, rehabilitation and the effects of supplements on performance and recovery.

School of EducationThe 31,000-square-foot, LEED-Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) School of Education houses our psychology department and the NCATE-accredited (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) education school. The building is equipped with simulated classrooms where students practice creating the most effective teaching and learning environment. It also features clinical labs for conducting hands-on testing and experiments.

The Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce The School of Commerce holds the Center for Financial Research, which serves as a stock trading room and allows students to receive real-world, practical learning opportunities. The center includes teaching and research technology, including financial databases, investment software, professional accounting programs, a stock ticker, dual-screen monitors, SMART boards and world clocks. The building also contains a graphic design lab with 24 digital workstations — each equipped with a Wacom touch screen monitor and an iMac on a movable arm to allow for an adjustable workspace.

School of Art and DesignHPU’s School of Art and Design emphasizes the importance of hand skills combined with technological proficiency in profession-specific software. Students studying in the School of Art and Design have access to cutting-edge equipment including a technology lab equipped with a laser cutter, CNC router and 3D printer that gives students the ability to produce to-scale models of furnishings or products at a degree of detail tempered only by their imaginations. They also have access to several Computer-Assisted Design labs, including a 20+ station Mac lab with large screen Cintiq interactive pen displays, which introduce our students to programs like Sketch-Up, CAD, REVIT and the Adobe Suite.

The Nido R. Qubein School of CommunicationThe School of Communication features two high-definition TV studios, audio recording studios, a screening theater, editing labs, a student-operated radio station, a nationally cited survey and research center, an interactive media and game design facility, a robust Media Fellows program and various computer labs. The school’s Board of Advisors includes leaders in radio, television, newspaper and magazine companies across the nation, including 34-time Emmy award-winning producer and Fox’s World Cup Coordinator, David Neal, and Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak.

Collaborative ResearchS tudents in all academic disciplines are given

the opportunity to partner with professors and engage in research, scholarship and

creative endeavors as early as their freshman year in order to build a compelling résumé to help them stand out to future employers and graduate schools.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Works The Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program encourages and supports

collaborative partnerships between nurturing faculty mentors and enterprising students. Critical inquiry, brainstorming, debate and mutual discovery intertwine, leading over time to the production of finished works suitable for publication, exhibition, or presentation in either professional or public forums.

affairs and social science research using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Student work and ideas are at the core of the SRC’s approach to pursuing interdisciplinary research projects and communicating its findings to the public. The HPU Poll reports methodological details in accordance with the standards set out by the American Association for Public Opinion Research’s Transparency Initiative, and the SRC is a charter member of the initiative.

The history of the former William Penn High School, the City of High Point’s African-American high school before desegregation, was retold. Conducting hundreds of hours of research, HPU students in a service learning history course called “The History Detectives” developed a website documenting findings from The William Penn Project.

Sophomore Laura Santiago published an article in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, recognized as one of the top orthopedic journals in the world. The article is the product of research she conducted at HPU on the most accurate way to diagnose lower body stress fractures.
