Dark (Lights Out) Manufacturing

• FANUC Robotics operates a lights-out factory employing robots to make other robots.

• Japanese camera giant Canon recently announced that it is phasing out human workers at several camera factories

• And in the Netherlands, Philips produces electric razors in a facility with 128 robots and nine human quality assurance workers.

Prospero the Farm Bot

Prospero, the name for the initial prototype, is a small, six-legged bot that, when joined with hundreds of other identical bots, will

form a swarm of farming robots that can quickly and accurately plant acres of land. Prospero requires no GPS or complex vision software — it sees only what is directly beneath it. If it detects a patch of soil with no seed, it plants one at a precise depth, sprays it with a preprogrammed amount of fertilizer and nutrients, covers the seed and marks the spot with a shot of fluid, which lets other robots know that this small area is already planted. When the swarm is at full force, all the robots will be planting simultaneously.

The Rise of the 1099 Worker

• The Gig Economy, Freelancer or teaming up with others (54 million Americans now freelance) leading to entrepreneurial status.

• More nanojobs in technical fields (engineering, security, hardware design) supported by nanodegrees. Work is short-term, less than two years.

Implications (for your curriculum)

• Self funded retirement (401K)

• Self funded health care

• Sick days?

• Other benefits of “good jobs”

How do you prepare your students?

Page 8: High Quality CTE: Career Pathway Connection Agenda · High Quality CTE Partners, Programs & Pedagogy Career Pathways as a System A Bit of Context ... software —it sees only what

To Prepare the Next Generation . . .

• There is an increase need for specific technical skills

• Credentials have increased in importance (Degrees, diplomas, certifications). These signal readiness to potential employers.

• Social skills have become increasingly important in the workplace: employability (readiness), behavioral & interpersonal (communication, negotiation, listening, problem solving) and “grit” – persistence!

All of this speaks the need for a

new vision of education and for

workforce development

Three Essential Features of Career Pathways System

Page 18: High Quality CTE: Career Pathway Connection Agenda · High Quality CTE Partners, Programs & Pedagogy Career Pathways as a System A Bit of Context ... software —it sees only what

Your Role

18

• Begin with the end in mind

– Labor market opportunities

– Credentials that signal to employers

• Be clear about

– What academic skills need to be addressed

– Consider how you will integrate the behavioral, pre-dispositional behaviors in high demand by employers

• Design new or redesign your curriculum/program to meet these new expectations – 5 Year Rule

• Begin with Reality!

Begin with a System Audit

What is working well?

What is not working well?

What is missing?

Start at the beginning: Analyze the SystemProgram Quality Audit

• Alignment with regional projected labor market needs

• Alignment with current offerings at the community and technical colleges.

• (Sector) Advisory committee role in linking secondary and postsecondary CTE

• Facilities alignment with industry standards.

• Faculty access to and participation in robust professional development.

• Student perceptions of course rigor, faculty and preparation.

• Students success in career readiness AND college readiness• College Acceptance

• Employer Acceptance

• Student Post-HS success • Family sustaining

wage
