Student Instruction Sheet

This activity involves examining three media used in High Renaissance painting. You are to

complete flowcharts to show the processes used for each painting medium and compare the

effects of the media with reference to three paintings. You will then draw conclusions about the impact of media and processes on art.

You will have two hours of class time and complete the assessment activity as homework over

three weeks.

This assessment is to be handed in on Monday, 6 April 2009 at the beginning of

lunch in room E1 or the Art Department office. Failure to do so will result in a Not Achieved being awarded.

There are three tasks in this assessment. You must complete all three tasks.

Task 1: Describing Media and Processes

Level 3Art History

Page 2: High Renaissance 3.3

For each of the three media and paintings given below, construct a flowchart to

describe each medium and the main steps used in each of the painting processes.

Use an A3 sheet for your flowcharts. Your description of the processes will show both a written

description and the use of diagrams to show the processes. Your A3 sheet should also include the

colour image from the ones detailed below.

Fresco: Michelangelo. The Last Judgment. 1534-1541.

Tempera: Alessandro Botticelli. Venus and Mars. 1483.

Oil: Raphael. Marriage of the Virgin. 1504.

Task Two: Comparing the Effects of Media and Processes

Part 1

Use the following table to compare the effects of the media and processes in the three paintings. All points must be covered.

Effects achieved through the medium of fresco painting in Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment, 1534-1541.

Effects achieved through the medium of tempera painting in Alessandro Botticelli’s Venus and Mars, 1483

Effects achieved through the medium of oil painting in Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin, 1504.

Part 2

Using your completed chart, explain the importance of the choice of media and process for each artist.

This will be done in a summary paragraph for each artist. In your paragraphs you need to consider and discuss

how each process resulted in different overall effects on the final product.

Task Three: Drawing Conclusions

Imagine that you are an artist working in the High Renaissance who has been commissioned by a private patron to

paint an image for their private library/chapel. In approximately 500 words you must discuss the media you

wish to use to create the art work. In your discussion must evaluate the impact of media and processes on the

style and content of the art work you would like to create for the patron. Use specific evidence from the art

works you examined in Tasks 1 and 2 to support your evaluation.

Resources

A good place to start looking into each art work may be the internet. There are many sites that discuss in detail the processes required for the creation of art works during the High Renaissance. Here are some recommended sites you may wish to look at for a starting point.

Please note that there are also books in the department such as Vasari’s Lives of the Artists, The Art of the Renaissance by Peter and Linda Murray, and History of Italian Renaissance Art published by Thames and Hudson. Again, these are a starting point but also visit the school and city library for assistance on resources.
