Scholarship Mania The Cedar Rapids/Riverside Alumni is something of a phenomenon for a small town like Cedar. At a time when other small town organizations are barely surviving, our alumni has a robust scholarshipfund that awards as much as $10,000 a year in scholarships. Not your ordinary small town. I am so proud to be part of this group. The scholarship fund continues to grow because of youwonderful people who grew up in and went to school in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Last year’s alumni weekend was our biggest and best in a long time. It was a powerfulreminder of the value of old friendships, but perhaps even more important is our continued support of the scholarship program. Every donation counts - big amounts and small amounts count - it all adds up to prove our commitment to our young people as they leave school in Cedar and head out into the world to help create the future.

Thank you so much! Thank you for your donations in the past and for those yet to come!

The CRHS Riverside Alumni held its 59th annual banquet on August 4, 2018 at St Anthony’s parish center in Cedar with 170 guests in attendance. Frey’s Pub & Grub provided an open bar with refreshments for a social hour before the banquet. Msgr. Steffensmeier gave the invocationbefore the meal was served by the St.Anthony’s Altar Society. Tom Goering and Joan(Loeffler) Berney acted as masters of ceremonies for the program that followed. The honor year classes were recognized, as were those who traveled at least 500 miles. Finally the Elite grads, those who graduated 60 or more years ago, were

honored. At 95 years of age, Pauline Braun was the eldest alumnus at the banquet. She graduated from CRHS 77 years ago. Nine graduating seniors received $1,000 scholarships. Bernie Auten reported on thescholarship program, and Dee (Dobson) Schalkgave a status report on Riverside School. We observed a moment of silence for our deceased alumni, and recognized themilitary veterans in attendance. Bernie Auten won the sweater raffle, much to the dismay of arch rival DonPrimrose. Bernie also did a great job ofmemorializing the day with pictures. An open house at the school, held after the banquet was well attended.

2018 Street Dance The first ever alumni street dance was a smashing success. For some time, the alumni dance has been held at the park, and over the last few years, attendance had fallen to approximately 100 people. By contrast, more than 300 people joined the fun at the street dance. Frey’s Pub & Grub and Country Inn were both open and available to the crowd for refreshments and food. The evening festivities started at 5 pm on Main Street with karaoke and music by DJ Lenny Geiser. Later in theevening, our local 90 Proof bandprovided the music. If you missed this ground breaking event, no problem. The alumnicommittee is planning anotheramazing gathering for this year - you’ll want to be here to see what theexcitement is all about!

Scholarship Update The Cedar Rapids/Riverside High School Alumni began working in 2017 to establish a permanent endowmentfund in the amount of $250,000. A fund of this size will be able to provide scholarships to the young women and men of Riverside High School indefinitely. The effort was spearheaded by Bernie Auten. Committee members include Dan Gordon, Irene (Loeffler) Rutten, Cynthia (Ruma) Buettner & Khristine (Gilroy) Johnson. We are pleased to report that the work is well on its way to fulfillment! Currently the fund stands at $169,250. In addition, we have $10,750 in pledges to be received over the next few years. This is all possible because of the wonderful generosity of the Cedar Rapids/Riverside High School Alumni. If you’d like to be a part of this endeavor, see the bottom of the reservation form on page 15. You can honor a loved one with a memorial if you wish. Thank you so much for your donations - it all helps to grow the fund and continue to provide scholarships for our young graduates!

Pauline (McGuire) Braun It’s been 78 years since Pauline (McGuire) Braun graduated from Cedar Rapids HighSchool, and she has always been loyal to her alma mater. Since the alumni associationwas formed in 1960, Pauline has attended the banquets whenever possible. Pauline was a cheerleader in high school, so you could say she’s been cheeringthe school on ever since by supporting the alumni. There were 29 students in the class of 1941.

This is the perfect time to join the committee! We have some great people on board-peoplewhoarefuntoworkwith,andarefullofgreatideas.It’sbeengratifyingtoseesomanynewideastakeshapeandresultinsheerawesomeness-likelastyear’sstreetdance,whichwasanunqualifiedsuccess. But like anything worth doing, we need a lot of help. The committee generally meets about 3 times a year in Cedar, and of course the really busy time is alumni weekend, the first Saturday in August. If coming to Cedar for meetings is a problem, don’tlet that stop you. There are some people in the group who are unable to attend themeetings, but who still make great contributions to the effort.
