Planning for Post High School Begins Now
• Students begin to expand or limit their future based on choices they make entering high school.
• Students should take advantage of opportunities offered in high school that will give them important life experience.
• Students need to have a general idea about what they might want to do after high school graduation.
• Students need to know that some decisions they make limit their choices for the future.
South Dakota Graduation Requirements
• For the Class of 2011, 2012, 2013 are under the previous SD Graduation Pathways of Standard, Advance and Distinguished.
• The Graduating class of 2014 and those starting HS thereafter will be under the graduation requirements passed by the SD Board of Education on Nov. 2, 2009.

Personal Learning Plan• The SD high school graduation requirements, state that
all high school students should have a personal learning plan with a minimum of 22 credits.
• Students create a personal learning plan using SDMylife.com
• Students will revisit and update personal learning plans annually. The learning plan is a guide and can be changed and modified at any time.
Language Arts Requirements:• Four unites of Language Arts- must include:
• Writing 1.5 units
• Literature 1.5 units (which must also include .5 units of American Lit)
• Speech or Debate - .5 unit
• Language Arts elective .5 unit
Math Requirements:
• Three units of Math – must include:
• Algebra I 1 unit
• Algebra II 1 unit*
• Geometry 1 unit*
* With school and parent/guardian approval, a student maybe be excused from this course in favor of a more appropriate course. A student may be excused from Algebra II or Geometry, but not both. If excused 3 units of math is still required.
Science Requirements:
• Three units of Lab Science – must include:
• Biology - 1 unit
• Any Physical Science - 1 unit
• Chemistry or Physics -1 unit*
* With school and parent/guardian approval, a student maybe be excused from this course in favor of a more appropriate course. A student may be excused from Algebra II or Geometry, but not both. If excused 3 units of math is still required.
Social Studies Requirements:
• Three units of Social Studies – must include:
• US History - 1 unit
• US Government - .5 unit
• World History - .5unit
• Geography - .5 unit
Do I Want to Take Advanced Classes?
• The right planning and scheduling allows student to take more classes in HS
• What are the advantages of AP classes?
• What are the advantages of dual credit classes?
• Students don’t want to go to college without having math for one or two years.

Do I Want to Get Involved?• Involvement in HS is important. Getting involved helps
you gain skills that colleges and employers look for.
• The more you can get involved in the more you expand your options.
• You can be involved in school sponsored organizations, athletics or activities outside of school.
• Sometimes a part-time job also benefit students in gaining important experiences.
• Community service is also a great way to get involved.
