Challenges Provide Opportunities

Executive Director
I hope you have had a great
start to your new school year. Having been a classroom teach-er, a coach and an administrator for many years before coming to the AHSAA, I know the new school year is a time of excitement and optimism. Despite all the summer plan-ning, the beginning of school can be a challenging time – from unex-pected students and balancing class sizes to handling issues with tech-nology, transportation (buses) and/or the lunchroom. Soon though, things begin to fall into place and you are able to focus on the educational mission of your school. With every challenge we face during the school year comes op-portunity. I have learned through-out the years that to be a success-ful educator one must have pa-tience, flexibility and understand-ing. As we face the challenges of the new school and athletic year, there are many groups who deserve our appreciation. I want to thank each of you for the patience, flexibility and understanding you have demonstrated in working with the new C2C software. I also want to thank everyone at STI/INOW, C2C Schools and the Alabama State Department of Ed-ucation (ALSDE) for their pa-tience, flexibility and understand-ing as we implement our new aca-demic eligibility software program. Always remembering that the
C2C software only picks up infor-mation from INOW or uploads from private schools, it is impera-tive that administrators, coaches and local LEAs work together to facilitate the athletic eligibility of their student-athletes. As I’ve said, all these challenges provide us with opportunities. The new software program will provide all AHSAA member schools with a more communica-tive tool designed for coaches, ad-ministrators, parents, students, and other interested parties while maintaining the academic integrity of our bylaws. We also will appreciate your pa-tience, flexibility and understand-ing as we begin gathering infor-mation for a new classification pe-riod. This year, we will not an-nounce the new classifications and
alignments until after the January 2014 Central Board of Control meeting. This will allow us to study the data, analyze various classifica-tion scenarios and provide the Central Board with the best possi-ble information on which to base its classification decision for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years. AHSAA Compliance Officers will again check online eligibility rosters for all sports either com-pleted or in season. All online eligi-bility rosters must have been in compliance prior to that sport’s first regular season contest. Compliance Officers will also audit all coaches who have been issued coaches’ cards to make sure the coach meets the coaches’ certi-fication requirements found on page 53 of the 2013-14 Handbook. Please have each coach’s file avail-able for on-campus visits by Oct. 1, 2013. Lastly, I want to thank Dr. Eric Mackey, Executive Director of the School Superintendents of Ala-bama, and Dothan City Schools Superintendent Tim Wilder for their assistance in establishing the AHSAA’s first Superintendents Committee. This new committee will meet in September in an effort to provide better communication between the AHSAA and our state superintendents. In closing, I want each of you to know that you can always call on any member of the AHSAA staff if you need assistance. We are here to serve you and we strive to return all phone calls and emails daily.

Russell Extends Partnership
Volume 6, Number 7
The AHSAA and Russell Athlet-ic announced Aug. 15 a five-year extension to a long-term corporate agreement that extends one of the AHSAA’s longest running corpo-rate partnerships through the 2020-21 school year. “We are extremely happy about extending this important partnership,” AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said. “Russell has provided tremendous support for the AHSAA champi-onship events and our member schools. “We appreciate the investment this valued partner is continuing to make in the youth of our state and what this means for all our mem-ber schools. I also want to thank our marketing partner, the Alabama Sports Foundation, for its im-portant role in managing our cor-porate partner program.” With this arrangement, Russell will continue to serve as the official uni-form and cloth wear partner of the AHSAA. “Russell Athletic is excited to continue our partnership with the Alabama High School Athletic Association,“ said Senior Vice President Gary Barfield. “Our partnership has been very important to our past and will continue to be important in the future.” Company representative Danny Moore was pre-sent for the announcement. With its affiliation with the AHSAA, Russell is directly supporting the children, schools and communities of Alabama through the AHSAA’s Reve-nue Sharing Program. Over the last four years, $5 million in corporate sup-port has been returned to AHSAA member schools through this program.

Middle School/Junior Conference Set For Sept. 18
The Alabama High
School Athletic Association
(AHSAA) is hosting its an-
nual Middle School/Junior
High Mini-Conference Sept.
18 at the AHSAA State Of-
fice.
The AHSAA has placed a
high priority on the profes-

benefit you greatly.
An outstanding line-up of
speakers has been assembled
to discuss several current topics
of interest for middle school
and junior high school adminis-
trators and coaches.
The topics include eligibility
bylaws, school audits and a
C2C overview. The fiscal man-
agement and accountability of
athletic funds will be addressed.
Attendees will also receive an
AHSAA Medical Advisory up-
date regarding concussions and
other health related issues.
The C2C software session
should be of special interest,
considering the current imple-
mentation of this new software.
Registration for the confer-
ence is available online by go-
ing to the AHSAA website,

Raycom To Broadcast Super 6, Final 48 Through 2019
The AHSAA announced a long-term corpo-rate agreement with Raycom Media Aug. 15 at the annual Media Day at the AHSAA office. Executive Director Steve Savarese made the announcement. The agreement with Montgomery-based Ray-com Media, Inc., owned by the Retirement Sys-tems of Alabama, makes the company the AH-SAA’s live television partner beginning in 2014. Raycom will broadcast the AHSAA’s Tier 1 events -- Super Six state football championships and Final 48 state basketball championships -- over its extensive TV network plus the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Game and the Champions Challenge. With the contract running through June 30, 2019, Raycom will broadcast all semifinal and final games (boys and girls) at the Final 48 be-ginning with the 2014 state basketball tourna-ment. The agreement, developed by the AHSAA with assistance from the Alabama Sports Foun-dation (ASF), solidifies the AHSAA broadcast package that also includes the recently-announced digital live-streaming partnership with PlayOn! Sports and the NFHS TV Net-work. Raycom Media and the AHSAA recently completed a two-year contract that provided live television or web-streaming of more than 60 Tier 2 events each year. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Ray-com once again,” said Savarese. “This partner-ship is important to us and will take us into the next decade with one of the best broadcast packages anywhere. The Raycom Network in Alabama includes some of the state’s strongest television stations and covers basically the entire state. It will no doubt provide enormous expo-sure of AHSAA championship events for our member schools and help promote our message of education-based athletics.” Raycom vice president Pat LaPlatney said the
company is proud of its relationship with the AHSAA. “Raycom Media, an Alabama company, is very happy to be working hand-in-hand with the AHSAA to bring the Super 6 and Final 48 to our viewers across our great state,” LaPlatney said. “We salute the young men and women in Alabama’s high schools who work very hard every day to make themselves better students and athletes, and we are pleased to recognize our wonderful teachers, coaches and parents as well. We look forward to working with Coach Savarese and his team in building a great pack-age of events that will benefit our schools and citizens.” Alabama television stations in the Raycom Media Group include WSFA NBC TV-12 in Montgomery (www.wsfa.com), WBRC Fox TV-6 in Birmingham (www.myfoxal.com), WAFF NBC TV-48 in Huntsville (www.waff.com), and WDFX Fox TV-34 in Dothan (www.myfox34.net).

Overview of AHSAA Concussion Safety Guidelines
The following processes were established by
the AHSAA through research, Medical Advisory
Board recommendations and input from other key
sources (certified trainers, doctors, NFHS re-
search, etc.). These guidelines were instrumental
in enabling the Alabama Legislature to establish a
concussion law that must be used by all levels of
athletic competition in the state.
Concussion Education – It is an AHSAA
requirement that all coaches complete an
online concussion course provided by the
NFHS before a coach is allowed to partic-
ipate in practice or a game. More than
11,000 member-school coaches have tak-
en the course since 2009, ranking the AH-
SAA as one of nation’s top state associa-
tions in concussion education. The course
is required for all coaches in all sports. A
mandatory session at the AHSAA Sum-
mer Conference deals with medical issues
(including concussions).
Minimizing Risk (Protection) – It is im-
portant that equipment meets NFHS and
NOCSAE certification standards and that
helmets be properly fitted. Equally im-
portant is teaching the proper techniques
for blocking and tackling and having play-
ing rules that require those techniques be
used at all times. The AHSAA expecta-
tions include:
A. Requiring a pre-participation physi-
cal evaluation signed by a medical doctor
and a concussion history form signed by
the parent and student-athlete annually
B. Equipping players with properly fit-
ted and maintained helmets
C. Training players to tackle and block
properly
D. Enforcing existing rules against hel-
met-to-helmet contact
E. Collaborating with the NFHS to de-
velop rules to further reduce helmet-to-
helmet contact
F. Encouraging players to maintain peak
physical condition and strengthen neck
muscles
G. Working to reduce total brain trauma
through sensible, evidence-based limits on
full-contact practices
Identifying Signs and Symptoms of a Con-
cussion – Once a student-athlete shows
signs or symptoms of a concussion, he/she
is held out of the practice or contest for a
minimum of the remainder of that day and
cannot return to play or practice without
written approval of a medical doctor.
Conservative Treatment and Management
– A student-athlete may return to play
once a medical doctor has provided writ-
ten clearance. It is recommended that
safeguards also include being able to re-
turn to a full academic workload without
special accommodations and performing
at or near their pre-injury baseline on all
post-concussion tests.
Retirement – There is no pre-determined
number of how many concussions are too
many. The number that leads to increased
risk of other problems later in life is likely
to be different for each athlete. Consulta-
tion with medical professionals involved
in the student’s care is important in deter-
mining the future participation of those
who suffer recurring concussions.

Teams Shine in 2013 Champions Challenge Games
The Champions Challenge at
Cramton Bowl was a great way to kick off the 2013 high school football sea-son. I want to thank the schools that participated, their coaches, players, bands, administration and fans. We had very good crowds and excellent games loaded with outstanding play by all teams. I want to also thank the City of Montgomery, the hardworking folks at Cramton Bowl and the AHSAA staff for making the tripleheader a success. A special thank you also goes out to the AHSAA Radio Network for broadcasting the games and to PlayOn! Sports for webcasting the games live over the AHSAA and NFHS TV Networks. Benjamin Russell and Walker high schools played in the 5A game on Friday night. Saturday’s doubleheader included Straughn versus Walter Wellborn in the small-school game and Enterprise versus Bob Jones in the 6A game. I congratulate the head coach-es: Kevin Rose of Bob Jones, Da-vid Faulkner of Enterprise, Trent Taylor of Straughn, Jeff Smith of Walter Wellborn, Danny Horn of Benjamin Russell and John Hol-laday of Walker. Their example set the pace for their teams and fans. This was the eighth year of the Champions Challenge. A total of 33 schools have participated with
all eight districts represented. The Champions Challenge is just one of many events the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) is involved with. Another major game we will host in December is the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Game at Cramton Bowl. The coaching staff is busy already in the team selection process. The head coach this year is Woodrow Lowe of Central-Phenix City. We look forward in December to another outstanding ef-fort. Coaches Cards One last item, coaches cards now require a photo. Make sure all coaches in your school upload their photos in
their contact information online.

Know The Rules For Foreign Exchange Students
We want to wel-
come all of you back
to school. I hope eve-
ryone has a great year! I want to take this
space to provide
schools with a remind-
er concerning Foreign
Exchange Students.
Please send the forms
in early for approval.
A foreign exchange
student attending a
member school located
in the school zone where the host family re-
sides is eligible to receive a waiver of the
Transfer Rule for a period of one year provid-
ed this is the student’s first year as a foreign
exchange student. The student must be as-
signed by a program on the current Advisory
List of International Travel and Exchange Pro-
grams published by the Council on Standards
for International Educational Travel (CSIET). This waiver is granted under the stipulation
that the foreign exchange student meets all oth-
er eligibility requirements of the AHSAA and
has not received a high school diploma or its
equivalent. A Foreign Exchange Student Registration
must be completed and filed with the AHSAA
before eligibility can be determined on any for-
eign exchange student. After approval, the stu-
dent must be submitted to the State Office via
online reporting. If you have any questions, please contact the
AHSAA office and we will be glad to assist
you.

The AHSAA would
like to congratulate the football crews that worked the 2013 Champions Chal-lenge Aug. 23-24. They did a great job with the games. The regu-lar season got underway this past weekend for football and volley-ball. All officials are re-minded they must com-plete the registration pro-cess which includes the testing process before accepting an assignment. Temperatures will be hot, thus requiring the need for heat timeouts during football con-tests. They will occur once every period at the midway point in the quarter. Also, an additional minute will be added to the time between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods. These timeouts are re-quired for the first three weeks of the season. Af-ter that time, they will be assessed as needed. We expect good sportsmanship during contests at all times. We also expect the officials and game management personnel to be professional at all times. If a player or coach does get ejected, we remind the officials the report must be submitted online within a 12-hour period. The AHSAA looks forward to a great Fall sea-son and an exciting Super 6 in Tuscaloosa Dec. 5-6.

The new Mini-
Clinic Series for 2013-14 school year has been scheduled. We hope you will make every effort to take advantage of the professional development of-fered at our mini-clinics, as well as the camaraderie and exceptional economic value they offer. This year’s clinics will be offered in 10 differ-ent sports and will begin Thursday, Sept. 12. The first mini-clinic offered will be for basket-ball. All mini-clinics are open to both middle school and varsity coaches. Each clinic will be a combination of Q&A, classroom and some will also have demonstrations. Each clinic will be taught by qualified, suc-cessful high school and/or college coaches. Our hope is that the smaller setting will en-courage questions and interaction. The goal is also to provide professional development, in close proximity, at a reasonable price. A schedule of all mini-clinics is listed. A schedule is also available at our website, www.ahsaa.com. Registration information is also available online and may be accessed through the “Athletic Directors and Coaches Association” page of our website.
