TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

Principal Newsletter Report Week 3 Term 2 2019 I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all members of our school Community back to Term 2. I hope that everyone had a relaxing time spent with family and friends and took the time to regenerate and re-energise ready for what is shaping up to be another busy term. Term 1 ended with a number of really positive school and community events. The Colour Run / Cross Country was a fantastic day which was well organised and thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. Thanks to all of the PDHPE staff for their hard work and organisation to get this up and running. The end of Term 1 also saw the culmination of the STEM Mentoring groups work with our partner schools. Students from Corrimal HS had been attending each of the primary schools, helping students to become more familiar and confident with STEM thinking and projects. The end point for this initiative was the Stage 3 STEM Gala Day where each school got to participate in a round robin of STEM related activities at Corrimal High School. Each of the primary schools was then represented in the bridge building competition which saw student design and ingenuity put to the test - literally. Each bridge had increasing amounts of weights put on it to determine the fail point of the structure. I believe that the winning entry was able to withstand the forces of approximately 13 kg. Not bad for a bridge made from paddle pop sticks. All students from the high school and primary schools enjoyed the experience and it was great to see all of the students interacting so well with each other. The holidays saw Corrimal HS students represented at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service held at Corrimal. Students marched with the returned servicemen, and our Captains read a couple of the prayers during the service before laying the wreath. Corrimal HS also had students representing in the Catafalque party with the Army cadets. I was extremely proud of our students and impressed with the manner in which they represented themselves and the school on this very solemn occasion. This is a tradition which I would like to see continue to grow among our student population to further demonstrate our respect for the fallen and the returned. The commencement of Term 2 has seen a very settled start by our students with increasing numbers of students arriving at school on time every day, and ensuring that they get to class on time as well. This is very pleasing and allows the students to set themselves up for success every day. Student uniform has also continued to improve and this is demonstrating the pride and commitment that students have to our school. A reminder that as the weather gets colder, school uniform is still expected to be work by all students. If there are any issues with this, please ensure that you get your child to speak to their Year Adviser or Deputy Principal, so that we can adequately support them. Over the course of Term 1, and into Term 2, there has been a significant amount of work that has either commenced, or been completed at Corrimal HS. Some of this is linked to the repair from the fire and flooding; some has been funded by the Asset Management Unit, while other work has been funded by the school. Outlined below is an indication of some of the work that has been undertaken, as well as work which is planned ready for implementation, or is in the process of being planned. It is my intention to ensure that we continue to make regular improvements to not just the exterior / aesthetic look of the school, but also the internal learning environment.

The most exciting piece of information relating to upcoming / planned work is the discussions surrounding the rebuild of the Industrial Arts building. I have received approval to build the new building at the front of the school between the demountables and the front fence. This is an ideal spot for the new building and will provide a key focal point for our entire school community. It will be our showpiece building which will highlight and support the work that our amazing Industrial Arts staff do every day. It is my intention to push to ‘future proof’ this new facility with state of the art machinery and equipment. I have been advised that it could take up to 6-8 months for the approval, and potentially 18 months for the rebuild. While this timeline may not be ideal, it allows time for effective planning and consultation to ensure that we get the building that best suits our needs over the next few years. I will endeavour to keep everyone in the loop where possible about future progress. I would also like to encourage parents to become involved in the P & C to maximise parent voice while trying to improve the quality of the learning experiences for the students at our school. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night of next week (week 4) Regards, Paul Roger

LEADERS SUPPORTING

OUR COS

Recently, three students (Tarnni Foster, Aaron Ross and Jasper Hayman) were invited to attend Towradgi Public School’s Year 4 class to assist students in a STEM research initiative. Students from Towradgi Public School were working on developing a video showcasing the impact of excessive screen time for non-educational purposes and suggesting technological solutions to the issue. Corrimal High School students worked to support students in both the delivery and recording of these presentations. Thank you to both Towradgi Public School for the invite and our fantastic student leaders.

PREMIERS’ DEBATING

CHALLENGE

Recently our senior debating team has competed in the NSW Premier's Debating Challenge. Our first debate was several weeks ago and we came up against the might of Smiths Hill. Although we didn't win that debate we gave Smiths Hill a very challenging debate. This week we competed in two further debates against Woonona and Mulwaree. We debated the merits of an electoral system where candidates were expected to publicise election funding and we also debated about a media that was required to give equal coverage to both male and female sport.

These are extremely difficult topics and our team handled them with intelligence and mature

thoughtfulness, and I was very proud of them. All debates required the students to have one hour to

prepare a case and then each speaker had to speak for 8 minutes. Although we won't be progressing

to the next round I would like to congratulate my team on their willingness to represent the school

and engage in such a cerebral activity. Well done to Steph Walford, Chiahni Zulian, Tameryn

Burchell, Tanayah Burchell and Dylan Kramer.

WELLBEING AND ATTENDANCE

Welcome back to a new school term. We continue to focus on school attendance – both whole day attendance and arrival time. It is compulsory for students to attend school every day that it is open for instruction. Corrimal High is committed to assisting your child and working with families to ensure positive school attendance and also working together to have students arrive on time for school. School starts at 8:35am each day and the start of the day is an important time where important information is given at roll call and students are settled into the school daily routine. If you are having issues getting your child to school on time, please call the school and speak with their Year Adviser. Additional, you will find useful links and supports through beyondblue and the blackdoginstitute.

KOORI CONNECTION The Koori Leadership Council has been busy this term with the organisation of several upcoming events including the Official Mural Opening for Artist Lani Balzan’s massive 10m x 2m piece, participation in the upcoming community Walk for Reconciliation, a Koori Cafe for Reconciliation Week along with a Mixed Koori League Knockout between neighbouring secondary schools.

The students in the KLC have also been busy preparing for Jersey Day and Relay for Life fundraisers to support their community and this will be distributed shortly.
