Welcome from our Stage 6 Year AdvisersYear 11 Progress Year 11 students received their Progress Reports on Monday June 4, and they were followed up with interviews the next week. These interviews helped the students see where they needed to focus to complete Year 11 successfully.

Not long to go!All of the Year benefited from the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Day on Tuesday 12 June. The Rotary clubs put together a very educational day to help our youth take care of themselves and others on the roads. Thanks also to our P&C who paid for students’ to attend.Many in Year 11 shared their talents at recent School’s Performing Arts Night on Wednesday June 20. This includes those who are doing Music as a subject and those who help behind the scenes with the stage production. Key tips for Year 11Use Maths Online - a series of short video clips explaining maths concepts. Students have free access and a password is available from their maths teacher. Complete all assessment tasks, even if late, and maintain regular attendance in class.TAFE and Shared Curriculum students are encouraged to catch up on work by making the best use of their study periods (such as staying at school Tuesday afternoons to complete work) and attend Monday Night Study Night in the Library. Students doing VET subjects, Hospitality and Construction, also require a week’s work placement to complete their course and these placements have been organised for early Term 3. Students doing Work Studies were required to complete their work experience this term.Year 11 students have their final exams next term in the week starting September 17. This is Week 9 of Term 3.

Year 12 ProgressTerm 2, 2018 has been a busy one for you year 12 but in some ways it’s the calm before the storm as our last term together as a group is about to begin. Hopefully your preparation for the half yearly exams stood you in good stead for the HSC Trials which will begin in week 5 T3. Or, if you felt like your preparation could have been more organised, its never too late to step up for best study practice. And with the holidays in just on a week, now is the perfect time to put those different steps into place to gain best possible marks for assessment. With that said I am very proud of the efforts put in by everyone over the last semester which were reflected in your reports along with the achievements in many extracurricular activities many of you have participated in as a group.

Once we return in Term 3 the reality is that you only have 8 weeks face to face classes with your teachers before the end of your schooling at Chatham so I encourage all of you once again to take on every opportunity provided to extend your learning and seek assistance to be the absolute best you can be in all areas of the curriculum. We will also have plenty of planning ahead of us in terms of more social activities such as committees to sort our year book, the organisation of your final hoorah at Chatham in the Year 12 formal on November 9th and our final school assembly.

On a more academic note it will be a busy term for all of you with final assessments- so always give 110% and seek assistance from teachers or myself as your year adviser or Mr Gay as your assistant year adviser, we all want to set you up for achieving your personal best. Be vigilant in your application for scholarships for University life and beyond along with applications for early entry too which for some of you have already begun.

It’s going to be wild ride in this last term but one in which I know we will all come together to support each other in our achievements, pick each other up when we may be feeling down and most importantly build on those friendships and memories that we have created over the last 6 years together.

YEAR 12 HAPPENINGS....I had the pleasure of taking the Y12 Visual Arts class on a trip to Sydney this semester to provide experiences that would build on their knowledge of all aspects of the senior syllabus, a treat for the tastebuds and a huge dose of fun too! After an early morning start at 6am we braved the early morning traffic of metropolitan Sydney and put absolute faith in Google Maps to get us to a shopping centre carpark near Surry Hills. Then the hard yards began with a brief 20 minute walk to the White Rabbit Gallery where we took in the visual feast of a number of artists exploring culture, technology and a number of unique approaches to engaging us as an audience. A highlight was the full room, 360 degree video game that Zara Kelly smashed out against a number of foes!

Our nest destination was Brett Whiteley’s studio gallery and we were heading there on the 26th anniversary of his death. Being able to view his mammoth sized Alchemy piece was amazing along with the varying landscape works from his early years that saw him gain notoriety as one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. However the best was yet to come as we ventured upstairs and stepped into his world as an artist, his studio where his iconic Bodies of Work were produced in the last 10 or so years of his life. The scattering of art tools and materials across the floor, easels and splashed on his walls along with the opportunity to view his sketch books was definitely memories that will last a lifetime and inspirational to say the least.

After a rather scrumptious lunch in a little café in Surry Hills we made our way to the North Sydney Harbour hotel which certainly didn’t disappoint in the harbour views. We rugged up against the rather chilly weather

and set off for yet another walk to check out Luna Park- great opportunities for some fun photos and with the last night of Vivid, the sights and scenes across the habour were truly spectacular.

Day 2 proved to be an equally wonderful day filled with memorable experiences with Y12 Visual art 2018!! It started with a hearty brekkie in a little café across from our hotel where they even provided warmed blankets. Next a stroll through the tranquility of Wendy Whiteley’s garden at Lavender Bay- bit of fun for Rosie Toy here with the kookaburras and taking in the comments of the many world travellers who visit this piece of heritage each year in notes books left to fill in along with a story of how the garden was created. We popped on the Sea Kat ferry to circular quay, ste off on yet another trek to the Art Gallery of NSW and were totally inspired by the Archibald (we even met one of the collaborative artists yesterday at the White Rabbit gallery) Wynne and Sulman Prize- analyzing art practice and the world of a range of cultural Australian art too. We then journeyed through the Botanical Gardens and sights of some Vivid artworks, had lunch with the rather FRIENDLY AND SCARY seagulls then finished the day with Visual delights at Contemporary Gallery. Phew!!!

I’m so proud of these wonderful young women I shared this excursion with in terms of their curiosity and enthusiasm in everything we viewed along with the maturity displayed on the whole excursion. Its experiences like this that keep me going as a teacher- thanks Zara Kelly, Samara Palmer and Rosie Toy.

SINGLETON HSC STUDY DAYMyself and a small group of rather keen students including Stanley Tan, Griffin Humphreys, Teagan Phillips, Marylyn Sendah, Zara Kelly and Rose Toy set off for a day of study skills preparation at Singleton High School on May 25th along with hundreds of fellow year 12 students from over 28 schools in NSW.

The day provided these students with a range of hour lectures run by experts in all HSC curriculum areas including Senior HSC markers and even some staff who write the HSC exams. Who better to learn from in terms of preparation for the HSC than these knowledgeable people.

The day proved to be a worthwhile experience in picking up key tips on not only what to study in the student’s selected subject areas but also ideas on how to better prepare for the upcoming HSC. Everyone who attended did Chatham proud in terms of their maturity and behaviour displayed through what was a long day of academic learning and I know all these students will take on board the learning experiences provided.Ms Rebecca Humphreys

Transition Planning, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Employment Supports for Year 12 school leavers

The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports that build skills and capacity for participants to engage in employment as well as assistance to find and maintain employment.To assist in the transition from school to employment, eligible Year 12 school leavers may receive a funding support package called School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), as part of their NDIS Plan. Other Year 12 school leavers, who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the NDIS, but still require support to access employment, can seek support from a Disability Employment Service.

A student, who is receiving significant adjustments to access their HSC coursework in the mainstream setting and / or Disability Exam Provisions are encouraged to participate in a Personalised Transition Planning meeting. Adjustments include but are not limited to; reader/writer or extra time during exams, modified tasks, coloured paper, enlarged font, support teacher hearing or vision, in class support from a Student Learning Support Officer. Our school’s Learning and Support Team are in the process of organising transition planning meetings for students who have already been identified as requiring support in the post school setting. These meetings will be scheduled in June.

If you are a mainstream Year 12 student, or a parent / care giver of a student, wishing to receive information regarding post school options and supports, please contact, Mrs Kimberly Wilson (Head Teacher Welfare) or Ms Amanda Hutchen (Learning and Support Teacher) for further information and to discuss eligibility. Parents/care givers of Support Unit students will be contacted soon regarding appointment times for the upcoming transition planning meetings in June.

My Course Find a Course - provides a A to Z of career options and related courses. Uni (important area for Year 12 students), this section has the following drop down menu options:• Open Days. A full listing for not only NSW and ACT but across Australia with links about going to them. • Scholarships. Each Uni has an explanation about their scholarships and how to apply for them. Many have the listing of their Undergraduate Scholarships they have on offer. • Bonus Points. Many universities offer Bonus Points which can help you gain entry to your chosen degree at their Uni. This is often based on how well you have done in particular HSC subjects and/or on your location. Some Unis even have a handy Bonus Points calculator. • Alternative Entry. Unis have various ways to allow you to gain entry. Each Uni’s options are found here. • Educational Access Scheme. If you faced some type of hardship over your HSC years, then you may be considered for entry to your degree by completing an E.A.S. application. Speak to your Careers Advisor. • Deferment. Some people need to have a break before entering Uni for half a year or a full year. The table given here summarises what each Uni considers and what you may need to do. Deferment allows you to bank the degree for which you were accepted and to start it at the end of this break. • Accommodation. Check each University to find the most suitable accommodation to fit your needs. • Overseas Exchange. Select a university of your choice and find out how you can study part of your chosen degree in one of your favourite countries. • Interstate. Each State in Australia has its own version of our NSW UAC (Universities Admission Centre). If you wish to consider

• Labour market conditions are strong — employment is up by a robust 403,300 over the year to January 2018.

• Young people are benefiting from the strong labour market conditions — industries with large numbers of young workers include Retail Trade (around 386,000), Accommodation and Food Services (385,000) and Construction (175,000).

• Australia’s industry structure is changing — today, more than three in every four Australian workers are employed in a service industry, with much of the growth driven by Health Care and Social Assistance.

• There are now more jobs for higher skilled workers — the majority of employment growth over the past five years has been in occupations that generally require post-school qualifications, and this trend is likely to continue.

1. has given their skills to developing an understanding and knowledge in career education with students; teachers; community members; and support agencies through their school responsibilities; and

2. is involved on a professional level outside the school for services to other careers advisers and to the CAA; and

3. has been selfless in their approach and has committed themselves to hours beyond normal expectations to ensure that outcomes for students and teachers are worthwhile.
