Rescheduling Spirituality By Nathan Decker

“There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already

full.”

-Henry Kissinger

Ah, Fall… The return to regular schedules from our lazy summer days is upon us. For those with kids this

means school schedules, bus schedules, practice schedules, game schedules, homework and test schedules,

not to mention scheduling family time in there somewhere. For those without kids, this means scheduling

around school buses in the morning and afternoon in addition to rush hour. And in all of this we have to find

time to eat, sleep, exercise, have meaningful relationships, and develop as decent human beings? Stressed

out yet?

Our society constantly seems to be trying to find time. We have apps to help schedule our lives.

Employers direct deposit so you don’t have to go to the bank. Businesses are switching from how to get you

into the store to buy more to how to get more to the consumer with same day delivery. There are even apps

to pay our bills so we no longer have to think about what we are spending. And yet no one seems to have

found any more time. Instead, we feel as though we have less and less time.

God gives us all the same 24 hours in a day. What we do with our time shows our priorities and

beliefs. The reason we all feel so stressed out and over stretched by our schedules is our need to reschedule

our spirituality. Recently, I was singing “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” an old traditional hymn. While singing, I

had this horrible thought. How could anyone schedule an hour for prayer? That would be 1/24th of my whole

day! It’s hard enough to get folks to give one hour a week for Jesus, now we’re singing about giving an hour

a day in prayer? And then it hit me… my own lack of prayer is why my soul is thin, my strength expended,

and my faith fickle.

God desires that we spend time in prayer for recovery, rest, relationship, and renewal. In prayer, God

brings my mind to my wife and children and I see how I am teaching them through my life how to live

without pause. In prayer, God brings my mind to my work and I am reminded how I lose focus and miss

what really matters because I’m worried about deadlines and Sundays. In prayer, I have time to reflect and

gain the power to be changed.

An old Buddhist parable talks about a man who was confronted by another man. “Why would you

spend time in prayer and meditation? What have you gained?”

“I haven’t gained anything. But let me tell you about what I’ve let go. I’ve let go of anger, ego,

greed, depression, insecurity, and fear. Prayer is not gaining, but losing, which is ultimately gaining.”

As disciples who follow Jesus, we need to reschedule spirituality into our lives. No, it doesn’t have to

be an hour, but it should be a priority. Taking some time to pause and reflect as Christ did often in his earthly

ministry is where we gain strength, insight, and healing. God designed us not only for work and play, but

also for rest. Find space to care for your soul this week, after all, it’s what Jesus would do.

“You should do your work for six days, but on the seventh day you should rest. Even during plowing or

harvest time you should rest.”

-Exodus 34:21

High Street UMC is beginning our 7th year of sponsoring

50 food insecure children from S.P. Morton Elementary

School in Franklin for the Backpack Program through the

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. We financially

sponsor 50 children who will receive backpacks full of

food twice each month throughout the school year. We also will continue packing

30 additional bags of food each time for a total of 80 backpacks that will go to the

school. These extra 30 bags are funded from donations to the Foodbank of

Southeastern Virginia, but all 80 backpacks will be handled through our church and

be delivered to S.P. Morton. We are asking for donations to support the 50

sponsored children. The cost per child is $110 for one child, or you may make a

donation of any amount. You can put a check in the offering plate and mark it for

Backpack Program or drop it by the church office.

Our first packing session, where we will actually put the food into the bags in

assembly line fashion, will be Tuesday, October 1st at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship

Hall at church. We will begin setting up at 4:30 if you can come at that time. We

especially need a few able-bodied folks who can lift the boxes. If you would like to

help deliver the boxes to the school on October 2 during the morning, please let

Ruthie know. This time is a little flexible. If you would like to add your name to the

email reminder list, please let Ruthie know (569-9449) or call the church office (562

-3367).

Thanks so much for your support of

this program. We are feeding

children right here in our own

community!

MISSION TEAM

The Mission Team is sponsoring a collection of yarn

during September and October. The Southampton

County Department of Social Services collects yarn to

be given to the Deerfield Correctional Center in

Southampton County. Some of the inmates knit and

crochet warm hats for people in need. If you would

like to contribute new or partially used skeins of yarn,

please place them in one of the baskets in the narthex

or in the hallway near the church office.

This is a double-bonus project because we will be

helping the inmates with giving them something

productive to do and helping those in need this winter

with items of warmth.

Part of the crowd who attended VBS

Thursday evening.

Community Day 2020 is just six short months away! Your Community Day Planning Committee is hard

at work ironing out details to make the April 25th Community Day the BIGGEST and BEST yet!! A day

of entertainment for the whole family!!

How can YOU help?

THREE WAYS!

First, BY SPREADING THE WORD! If you are a member of a non-profit organization, please

encourage them to have a booth. And you can encourage your family and friends to save the date and

attend. Also, if you want to be a presenter (teach a class), let Jane know.

The second way you can help is by VOLUNTEERING. We need people to serve on the various

committees. The committee chairs are listed below:

• Business Vendors - Susan Jones and Mary Christy Morris

• Parking - Mark Frohlich

• Non-Profit Vendors - Jane Riddick-Fries

• Advertising/Marketing - Kathy Worrell

• Inside Church Activities - Glenda Jervey

• Outside Activities - Jane/Stephanie Rose

• Clean Up - Jeff Draughn (Boy Scouts)

• Security - Richard Walker

• Logistics - Ted Fries

• Sponsors - Nathan Decker

• Information Booth/HSUMC Ambassadors - Alice Shaffer

• Community Day Coordinator - Jane Riddick-Fries

The various chairs would LOVE to have you on their committee!! Many hands make light work:)

The third way you can help is to PRAY. Please pray our Community Day will touch Franklin/

Southampton County and truly bring us #better together!

On August 20, our community had a storm go through that had high winds resulting in downed

power lines. Power crews were called in from as far as Danville to restore electricity. High

Street UMC as well as other local churches pulled together to provide meals. On August 22,

HSUMC provided lunch for these power crews and first responders. Please see picture below.

PENNY COLLECTION FOR

JANEL LUIS ESPINOSA

As we do every year in the fall, the Mission Team sends a check for $180 to COPA (Community

Partners) based in Florida, for the yearly sponsorship of our child from the Dominican Republic,

Janel Espinosa. This money pays for the fees, supplies, uniforms, books, and other things he needs

to be able to attend school. Without our sponsorship, Janel would not be able to go to school. Janel

turned 10 years old in September! Many of you signed the birthday cards that were in the narthex

and we mailed them off to him. I’m sure he was very excited to receive them. In case you do not

know, the $180 is raised each year from our penny collection. There are brass buckets (with Janel’s

picture attached) on the round table in the narthex and on the children’s Sunday School desk. We

appreciate your ongoing donations of pennies and other coins to help Janel.

PICNIC AT BRONCO CLUB

September 1! What a beautiful day for a picnic! That Sunday brought both our newer members and our

more “seasoned” members together to worship and fellowship surrounded by God’s handiwork.

Our musicians led us in singing, Cara sang a lovely anthem, Nathan brought the message. . .and we even

had a baptism (Pacey Virtue)!

Thanks Roscoe, for giving pony rides (and Susan for bringing him). Thank you to our vitality team for

your help in this event.

Until next year when we go “. . .down to the river to pray. . .”
