Welcome to the 1st Edition

We are very excited to present our first issue of our new monthly e-newsletter to our students. Our aim is to keep you informed and showcase Highbury’s achievements, news and “what's going on around the college” all in one place. Throughout the academic year, we will send you stories and insights from our students and staff. This is a joint effort between the Students’ Union and Student Support and Alumni Services. We hope you enjoy this new way of keeping you informed.
My name is Nam Kanram. I’m the current Sabbatical Students’ Union President. We as a Students’ Union represent students. We speak on behalf of all students at Highbury College through Student Voice to improve your student experience.
We’re here to help you get the most out of College life. Our aim is to develop an effective Students’ Union, supporting and listening to students’ ideas and issues.

JAMM Radio – Official Launch!
The BTEC media students at Highbury College have now launched a brand new online radio station, JAMM Radio.
On 9th
and 10th
January at West Quay Shopping Centre, Southampton and Commercial Road, Portsmouth, our student radio team officially launched JAMM Radio outside of the college walls, bringing some bright orange music to your day.
So now you can listen to Jamm Radio anytime, anywhere via www.jammradio.com or the Tune in Radio App using a smartphone.
You can wake up with a smile to their breakfast show with Josh and Steph from 8am till 10am every weekday morning, or brighten your lunchtime with Laura and Jake from 12 – 2 plus loads, loads more.
It’s a fun, upbeat station playing chart hits and guilty pleasures, so tune in and have a listen!

Advanced Web Development
Highbury College is to play a key role in a new Government-backed National College for the Creative and Cultural Industries, as a member of the Leadership Group. The new College, announced on 11
th Jan by Business
Secretary Vince Cable MP, is to be established at the High Production house, opening September 2016. The news comes shortly after the announcement that Highbury College is to play a key role in a new National College for the onshore oil and gas industry, part of a historic step in building a UK shale industry. Up to £80 million of capital funding will be matched by employers over 2015-16 and 2016-17 – a potential total investment of £160 million by 2017.
Managed by Creative & Cultural Skills on behalf of a consortium of employers and industry organisations the new National College will provide specialist training in the technical skills needed by the creative and cultural industries.
This is in response to significant industry growth, with the creative economy growing at four times the rate of the national economy, and the value of the UK’s creative industries exports standing at over £15 billion per year. Business Secretary Vince Cable said, “The talent which brings plays, operas, and films to life on screen and stage is the driving force behind our world-leading creative sector. UK creative industries generate £71 billion in
revenue each year and support 1.71 million jobs. It’s not something we’re just good at - we are the best in the world. We must continue to invest in the next generation of talent. That is why today I am proud to announce the National College for the Creative and Cultural Industries, which will train the technicians to support our country’s next award winning directors, in musicians and actors.”

Highbury College takes leading role in new National College for Creative & Cultural Industries
Business, Enterprise and Energy Minister Matthew Hancock MP has announced Highbury College will play a key role in a new National College for onshore oil and gas. This development is being jointly funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the onshore oil and gas industry, as part of a historic step in building a UK shale industry. Highbury College's expertise will benefit both the UK and regional economies. The National College will draw together a select number of leading education and training institutions and

industrial partners to meet the onshore industry’s future skills needs. Building on the UK’s world-leading offshore heritage, the National College will help the UK become an international centre of excellence for onshore operations, training the next generation of onshore oil and gas specialists. Portsmouth’s Highbury College is one of only three colleges represented, and the only training provider in the South of England. The College’s Centre of Excellence in Construction, Energy & Sustainable Technologies will play a key role in the project, with a wide range of accredited courses covering many different subject areas across the oil and gas sector including Construction, Engineering, Health & Safety, Leadership & Management and computing and IT.
Future developments at Highbury College will include a National Centre for Chemical Engineering Technology, the development of employer-led Higher Apprenticeships and a regional logistics and plant training centre. Highbury College will play a vital role in developing a highly skilled British workforce for the onshore energy sector, as well as bringing a wealth of opportunities to the region’s young people. I believe our selection for this very significant initiative reflects our commitment to being a world-class provider of knowledge and skills-based training, at the forefront of developing the workforce of the 21st century.

Student Journalist of the Year
A Highbury student has scooped a top journalism award in the National Council for the Training of Journalists Awards for Excellence. Ben Fishwick who studied the one-year Diploma in Journalism at Highbury College and now works at The News in Portsmouth, was the winner of the student news journalism award for 2014.
Ben said: “It‘s was great to be recognised by the NCTJ this early on in my career. I learnt a lot on the course at Highbury College, which was especially demanding as I completed it while working full-time at The News”.
National Apprenticeship Award 2014
The Awards recognise excellence in two areas: businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces. The award winners, representing a range of sectors and regions, fought off competitions from over 1400 entrants to receive their awards and were congratulated by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Highbury College student Hayley James was crowned the Unilever Higher Apprentice of the Year 2014 after impressing a panel of judges from the employment and skills area. Highbury College had five students who competed in the UK finals in Birmingham in November 2014: IT students Louie Smith, Tom Burton, Andrew Gorecki, Mark Flynn and plastering student Michael Dobson. To get this far, the five students had to succeed in regional heats for their respective skills. Only the best participants in each skill category are selected to go on to the UK finals.
Mark Flynn won a Bronze medal in the Network Systems Administrator Advanced category and Tom Burton won gold in advanced Web Development. WorldSkills UK Competition 2014
WorldSkills UK is a very prestigious skills competition with “a series of tests designed by industry experts that focus on the highest UK and international standards. Individuals and in some cases, teams, are challenged to compete against the best in their region and ultimately the UK. The competitors are marked against a rigorous standard. Covering over 60 different skills at different levels, success in most WorldSkills UK competitions can lead to representing the UK at biennial WorldSkills International competition

Highbury College is highly active in terms of international activity. International cooperation for education and training is one of the College’s great strengths. We have developed strong links with educational providers and industry partners internationally and currently work closely with employers and training providers in a number of countries for example Nigeria, China, India, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Trinidad and Tobago.
Projects undertaken include the following:

establishment of a brand new
polytechnic branded as the Institute
of Technology & Management. This
has included the design of the iconic
building which was influenced by the
market-led curriculum. The College

assessment and recruitment of all

sector in India by working to train
teachers from one of the largest
construction companies in India
Facilitating a visit for 6 students and
accompanying staff to travel to
Guangzhou, China for the purpose of
carrying out a joint project related to
curriculum development between the
two colleges

1. Describe yourself in 3 words: Tiny, Chatty and Friendly
2. What do you miss the most about being a kid? I miss just playing.
3. What do you love the most about your course/job? I’ve always loved having something different to do every day, and with my job and trade I have that opportunity to have two different days and also meet so many colourful customers too.
4. Who is your idol/hero? I haven’t come across anyone who is worth looking up to yet. I’m too hard to impress, but there are so many people who have made a difference and aren’t famous.
5. What advice would you give your younger self? Buy a diary.
6. Do you have any hidden talents? I can click my back.
7. If you had a super power, what would it be? The ability to go back in time
8. What is your favourite Highbury memory? I have a few, visiting the excel hair and beauty show, practising the treatments on each other and graduation.
9. What has been your toughest accomplishment in your life so far?
I wouldn’t say I’ve had any tough accomplishment, I’ve worked for what I wanted and was lucky enough to achieve them. I don’t want to seem it was all easy but not giving up was what gave me the advantage.
10. What do you consider to be your most precious learned skill?
Interacting. Being able to interact with anyone in beauty is ideal, it helps to build relationships with customers, co-workers and being able to sell, sell yourself, sell products, and sell the company. It helps you to be noticed.

1. Describe yourself in 3 words: Determined. Inquisitive. Helpful.
2. What do you miss the most about being a kid? Having boundless energy!
3. What do you love the most about your course/job? I have taught on the Higher Education programmes at Highbury College for the last 5 years and without a doubt the most satisfying part of my job is seeing our students’ skills and outlook change as the course progresses and then seeing the joy on their faces as they achieve their qualification.
4. Who is your idol/hero? As a Business tutor I am particularly inspired by the success of Richard Branson, who has built a huge business through using his initiative, trusting others to deliver results and learning from his mistakes.
5. What advice would you give your younger self? Don’t worry about what other people think about you as they are probably wondering what you think of them. Just be yourself.
6. Do you have any hidden talents? I am a long distance runner, having completed several marathons and ultra-marathons (including 2 x 50 mile races) and I am currently training to run 100 miles along the South Downs way in one go (less than 30 hours) at a race in June.
7. If you had a super power, what would it be? Who needs super powers? I’m striving every day to be the best I can be – no quick fixes needed.
8. What is your favourite Highbury memory? The day that Will King came to the College (last Autumn) to share his business experience and advice for life.
9. What has been your toughest accomplishment in your life so far? Running 80 miles in 24 hours through mud, rain and in 5 mile loops around a forest in Reading last summer really tested my determination – and battered my feet!
10. What do you consider to be your most precious learned skill?
We often use the term evaluation in assignments and I think this is a crucial skill, enabling you to look at information, assess its merits and decide how best to act upon it, a valuable skill in the world of work and relationships, not just in completing your studies.
