Biology Support sessions (RCN) A level Biologists are encouraged to check their email as there are a range of support sessions that are now ongoing for year 12 and year 13. Details of these have been sent to all A level classes. Please contact Mr Craven in SC12 if there are any questions regarding these. Eco club (RCN) Eco club 2016 is up and running! We have started to clear the garden from last year in preparation for the next growing season. The Eco club meets every Thursday after school until 16:00. We meet in the garden if weather is clear, SC12 if it is wet! All lower school students are welcome to attend and learn how to grow their own food. Suitable outdoor clothing is essential and suitable footwear (wellington boots) highly recommended.

Literacy

Whole-School Literacy

Here is a very useful spelling rule. If you learn it, you can deal with many common spelling errors.

You can find this information on p167 of your planner. Use this to help you remember how to spell the plural of

words ending in “y” e.g. nationality, country … (Note: I only know of two exceptions to this rule. Do you know

them?)

Is it “– ys” or “- ies”?

Does the word end with a vowel + y? E.g. day, monkey, boy

Yes No

Answer Add “s”. E.g. days, monkeys, boys

Does the word end in a consonant + y? E.g. Nationality, try, country, democracy

YES NO

Change the “Y” to an “I” and add “ES”. E.g.Nationalities,

Tries Countries Democracies

404! Error message. You’ve gone wrong somewhere. Back to the

start!

October 2016

Dear Parent,

Poetry Live Trip 26th January 2017

We are excited to give your child the opportunity to attend the 2017 Poetry Live event in the Bath Assembly

Rooms.

The event will give students the opportunity to improve their understanding of the GCSE Poetry Anthology.

There will be opportunities to see highly engaging poetry performances from poets such as John Agar, Simon

Armitage, Grace Nicholls and Carol Anne Duffy. The poets will also respond to student questions and discuss

how poems connect to, and influence, other poems.

Other exciting aspects of the day are the examiner sessions where a highly experienced Chief Examiner will

deal with two skills vital for success in the GCSE English Literature examinations. The first session will look at

how students might deal with unseen poems in the exam, both how to think about them and how to write for

the best possible results. The second session will look at comparing poems, whether they are studied poems or

unseen, and how to write most effectively in either situation.

These sessions have proved invaluable to students’ thinking and we hope that your child will see how

beneficial this event will be in helping them to prepare for their Literature GCSE.

The tickets cost £40 and need to be paid for via Wisepay by Monday 28th November (please also return a

completed reply slip by this date). Payment should be made using the school’s on-line WisePay

facility. Information regarding this can be found by following the Letters’ link on the Parents’ section of the

school website (http://station1.highcliffe.dorset.sch.uk/intra/default.asp?id=2428) please make a note of your

Wisepay receipt reference, as you will need to provide this on the attached slip/ consent form. Receipts are

generated automatically on WisePay and sent to the email address you supply when making the payment.

There are limited tickets available and we will operate on a first come- first served basis. For more information, please visit http://poetrylive.net/ and if you have any further questions then please to not hesitate to contact me on the school’s number. Yours faithfully, Megan Benton KS4 Curriculum Leader English
