Spelling Focus: Closing the Gap Here are two words that are commonly misspelled:

- excitement

- disappear

Questions: 1. Where are these words’ Danger Zones?

2. What strategies would you use to remember the spellings? (There is a different strategy for each

spelling.)

Here are some options:

Answers: 1. The Danger Zones for the above words are:

- excitement (sometimes the “c” is missed out)

- disappear (sometimes people put in an extra “s” or miss out a “p”)

2. Here are some strategies:

a/ Link the word with a similar word: With the word “excitement”, it is the “c” that people miss out. Therefore, you could link the word with “city”. You can say, “I get excited” in the “city”. This will remind you to put a “c” in “excitement”. b/ Disappear – Remember that “the prefix never changes” so it is always going to be “dis+appear”. This is the same as “dismiss”, “disappoint”, “discuss” etc.

Your Challenge Last time, I asked you to think of a way to remember the spelling of “friend” and Elissa Fordham in 7.3 came up with this idea: “a way to remember friend is that there is end on the end of friend and friendships never end.” Elissa used the “word within a word” technique and I gave her a commendation. This week’s challenge: People often forget to put a “p” in “disappoint” or “disappear”. Can you think of a way to remind yourself to do this? Let me know and I will give you a commendation!

Let me know and I will give you a commendation!
