Welcome...

Our excellent and committed academic staff care deeply about the learning and teaching afforded to our students and provide a wide range of support to the business sectors with which we are engaged.

The friendly and caring environment we provide for our students is reflected in many ways, perhaps most particularly in the strength of the student community and in ways in which students contribute to the development of the College.

We have achieved, and work hard to maintain, the highest educational standards, and are widely recognised for the quality of our Higher Education provision. We have a long and proud tradition of working closely with the rural sector and will continue to do so, to add relevance to our teaching and research and to act as a focal point for transferring research into practice.

We believe that we make a vital contribution by producing graduates with the capacity to address rural issues, helping develop those already in work who need to aquire new skills, and by creating knowledge that will help the rural sector, its businesses and its communities to flourish.

We hope you find the pages of our courses guide interesting and informative. Or, better still, visit our wonderful campus in the Dorset countryside at one of our many events. We look forward to welcoming you.

Clare Davison | Principal

The Royal Agricultural UniversityFounded in 1845, the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) is the oldest agricultural education provider in the English-speaking world, and has a long-standing global reputation for its land-based courses and for research and consultancy.

Students from Kingston Maurward College may progress to study on one of the Royal Agricultural University’s top-up courses. These courses have been developed to enable students with prior qualifications at Foundation Degree or HND level to top up to a BSc or BA Honours award in one further year of full-time study.

The courses offered at the RAU build on agricultural, business and environmental knowledge, gained from previous studies, to provide the necessary skills and business expertise required of future land-based managers and professionals. This is achieved by a mix of lectures, industry speakers and relevant visits.

The Royal Veterinary CollegeThe Royal Veterinary College (RVC) originally The Veterinary College, London, was built in the parish of St Pancras in 1791, on the current site of The RVC’s Camden Campus and in January 1792, four students began a three-year course intended to cover all aspects of the veterinary art. In 1875 the College received its first Charter of Incorporation from Queen Victoria. Over one hundred years, the College had grown from a horse infirmary with a handful of students to a science based institution, producing internationally-renowned veterinarians and scientists.

In 1949 The Royal Veterinary College became a full part of the University of London, whilst retaining its independence with its own Royal Charter, and in 1955 the College acquired a country estate in Hertfordshire to provide a new field station, the now modern and vibrant Hawkshead campus.

More recent developments include the building of the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals in Hertfordshire, which today treats over 7,000 patients a year and, in 2001, seventy-six years after the opening of the College’s Research Institute in Animal Pathology at Camden, the establishment of the London Bioscience Innovation Centre, which houses over 40 life science companies. The RVC has a unique heritage in the English speaking world of 250 years of innovation and leadership in veterinary medicine and science.

Recent advances mean that the RVC now stands apart from its competitors as being the only vet school in the world to have accreditation from all the major professional bodies. Its programmes and students are more varied, and more diverse, than any other.

The Royal Veterinary College is committed to the three pillars of its mission:

• To education• To the discovery and translation of new knowledge• To the delivery of the very best clinical care and opinion

Above all, the RVC seeks to push back the frontiers of what is possible in veterinary medicine and its associated sciences.

Foundation Degree in Marine Ecology & ConservationIntroduction

Marine ecology is an integrative science that studies the basic structural and functional relationships within and among living populations and their physical-chemical environments in marine ecosystems.

It is a discipline which draws on all the major fields within the biological sciences, focusing on specific organisms as well as particular environments.

The importance of conserving marine species and ecosystems is growing as a consequence of human activities (including over-fishing, over-utilisation, degradation and loss of coastal and marine habitats, introduction of non-native species) and the intensification of global climate change.

As a result the management of marine species and ecosystems to prevent their decline are more important than ever before.

This two year full time course requires three days per week attendance at Kingston Maurward College and includes a 250 hour

industry placement prior to starting year two. The course is presented through a combination of lectures, discussions, assignments, practical activities, visiting guest speakers, specialist visits and work experience. Students can also expect to attend a study tour.

Foundation Degree in Para-Veterinary Science

Introduction

There is a significant and growing trend for vets to take a more strategic advisory role in managing herd health and to oversee the training of others to complete the daily herd health activities such as foot trimming, blood sampling and admnistration of medicines.

On many large livestock farms there will be a competent, trained member of the farm team able to do these technically challenging activities. For instance, most herdsman on dairy farms would competently treat lame cows and administer milk fever treatment to a downer cow.

Traditionally for many farms the best option was to use the vet although more are now turning towards the professional services of an appropriately trained paraprofessional - ‘The Para-Veterinarian’.

The career of the paraprofessional is still new and developing and the opportunities for graduates from this course are potentially very broad including positions on livestock farms and in the allied industries such as feed or pharmaceutical companies. In the USA, the use of ‘Vet Techs’ is on the increase and the

concept is popular with the large, progressive livestock units.

This course would suit students who enjoy working on a farm with livestock and are looking for a technical challenge, working closely with a veterinary team.

Course Content

• Understanding body systems and what happens when systems become diseased

• Developing paraclinical skills such as correct sampling (e.g. milk, urine, blood and post-mortem sampling) correct drug use (e.g. storage, administration) and husbandry skills (e.g. foot trimming)

• Understanding the opportunities and challenges within the UK Livestock Industry

Career Opportunities

• Paraveterinarian with a veterinary team

• Livestock farm assistant manager• Animal welfare auditing

Entry Requirements

Foundation Degree in Countryside and Coastal Conservation Introduction

The countryside and coastal environments in the UK are under increasing threat and their management requires professionals with the right mix of practical and intellectual skills. This Foundation Degree in Countryside and Coastal Conservation provides the interdisciplinary skills that the countryside professionals of the future need to effectively manage these complex environments.

Dorset contains a rich mixture of wildlife habitats including grassland, woodland, wetland and heathland, as well as the internationally aclaimed Jurassic Coast, which is a World Heritage Site.

The local marine environment contains important seagrass beds and rare native seahorses. Dorset’s heathlands contain all six of the UK’s reptiles, including the nationally protected smooth snake and sand lizard, and the county contains the most biodiverse area for plants in the country.

This broad range of habitats makes Kingston Maurward College the ideal place to study British Wildlife.

In addition, the importance of Dorset’s wildlife is reflected in the myriad of environmental organisations that are located in the county, which provide work experience with some of the leading scientists, wildlife researchers and habitat management teams in the UK.
