The Essential ReaderSTORIES FROM PAKISTAN

Naureen Dogar

Pakistan is a young state with a rich heritage. The hopes and aspirations of the people are reflected in the literature of the many languages spoken in the country. The struggle between the traditional and the contemporary, the reflection of socio-political changes, and the spectrum of emotions felt and expressed by individuals are some of the themes which come across in this selection of writings by Pakistani authors. This collection, especially compiled for O level and higher secondary students, introduces them to contemporary creative writing in English as well as translations from Urdu and Sindhi into English. The students will find a rich variety of styles ranging from the irreverence evoked by folk humour to the subtleties of writings from the Pakistani diaspora. The selection falls into two separate sections dictated by the choice of language, yet interestingly, common themes of nostalgia, archetypal journeys and severance from one’s roots recur with a regularity that cannot be put down to mere coincidence.

Politics and Genre in “Hamlet”SECOND EDITION REVISED AND EXPANDED

Adrian A. Husain

A leading literary critic takes a historicist view of Shakespeare’s most famous and enigmatic play. It is concerned with identity, time and power in Hamlet and the question of aesthetic form in relation to all these. It takes a fresh look at a Renaissance hero who exists, oddly, on the margins of his play—and yet is condemned to be its hero. It frames the question that lies, implicitly, at the heart of Hamlet and, in some strange way, constitutes its tragedy: what is a play if not playacting? The second edition of the book clarifies and further corroborates this. The themes of incest and political legitimacy are addressed, the ‘revision’ theory is explored - and debunked - and the ahistorical character of Richard examined in the context of Richard II in additional notes.

Changing Perceptions, Altered RealityPAKISTAN’S ECONOMY UNDER MUSHARRAF, 1999–2006

Shahid Javed Burki

The book analyses the economic and social problems faced by Pakistan during the tenure of President Pervez Musharraf as well as the opportunities that exist for the country in light of its geographical situation and of the rapid changes in the structure of the global economy. The analysis offered invites Islamabad’s policymakers to strategize about the country’s economic future and also to encourage debate in the country on various aspects of public policy. Among the issues explored in the book are the reasons for the rapid growth of the economy from 2003 until the present, and its impact on poverty and income distribution. The author suggests that these high rates of growth will not be sustained into the future unless Islamabad introduces a number of changes in the structure of the economy. The suggestions offered in the book, if followed, could help the country join the rapidly growing economies of Asia.

The Islamic Law of Inheritance Hamid Khan

This book is a study of the Islamic law of succession, intestate as well as testamentary. Based on original sources, it includes the historical and theological bases of law developed by the Muslim schools of jurisprudence. The Sunni and Shia law of inheritance are explained clearly. The points of view of all four Sunni schools of jurisprudence have been discussed in depth wherever there is divergence of opinion amongst the jurists of these schools. The author makes a comparative study between the Sunni and Shia laws of inheritance and focuses on problems being faced by Muslims due to the strict application of traditional Islamic law in their contemporary situations. These problems have been analyzed in the light of various reforms introduced by Islamic countries to resolve such issues. This book is an essential component of the course on ‘Muslim Personal Law’ for LL.B students and the course on ‘Islamic Law’ for LL.M students. It will be of great interest to lawyers, judges, law teachers, law students, civil servants and revenue officers and the general reader and students of Islam.

Cunningham’s Manual of Practical AnatomyVOLUME 1: UPPER AND LOWER LIMBS

Revised by G. J. Romanes

These well known and popular manuals appear in their fifteenth edition in an entirely new format. The text has been redesigned to make it more accessible to the student, to highlight key terms, and to set the dissection guide apart from the main text. There are many new illustrations and many of the old have been replaced or improved. The text has been expanded slightly to include new material on embryology, organogenesis, and congenital malformations of clinical significance. New imaging and diagnostic techniques such as CT scanning are included as an introduction to the usefulness of these methods and to help the student appreciate the close packing of the various structures of the body. With the expanded general introduction and additional explanations throughout the text, the manuals should provide a sufficient textbook for medical students and others. This feature is increasingly necessary as the time available for teaching anatomy is progressively cut back and the need for detailed anatomical information in many branches of clinical work steadily increases.

MeerajiINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

This is a selection of poems by Meeraji, who initially struck litterateurs as odd and whose poems contained ambiguity of a level not found earlier in Urdu poetry. Shortly after his death, Meeraji came to be regarded as a leading modern Urdu poet and he became a veritable cult figure. Never before had ambiguity and lyricism come together as they did in the poems of Meeraji. His sensibility was discovered to be rare but genuine and his oeuvre has been hailed as a classic.

2008, 64 pages, 180x118mm, Paperback ISBN: 978-0-19-547608-8 Rs 75

Khawaja Mir DardINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

Dard has always found a high place in the hierarchy of classical poets because of the felicity of his expression and also the even quality of his verse. His small dewan has attracted the most casual readers of Urdu poetry as well as the most fastidious literary critics. The ghazal idiom enables his poetry to be read at both a worldly and spiritual level which is why the readership is so extensive.

2008, 64 pages, 180x118 mm, Paperback ISBN: 978-0-19-547598-2 Rs 75

Mir Taqi MirINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

This book contains selected ghazals of Mir Taqi Mir (1723-1810) who was the defining poet of classical Urdu poetry. His ghazals were celebrated for their utter simplicity and pathos, and his verses exemplifying the ideal suffering lover created a prototype, which all masters of Urdu poetry aspired to, but never achieved. Mir thus became the poets’ poet. This slim volume of his selected poetry is designed to make the poets’ poet, the people’s poet as well.

Akhtar ShiraniINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

This is a short and accessible selection of the poems of Akhtar Shirani, known from the 1930s as the Romantic Poet of Urdu. His poems broke new ground in Urdu and brought in the simplicity and sincerity associated with ancient Arabic poetry, which depicts love and the desert milieu familiar to our poet through his life in Rajasthan. All his contemporaries have been unstinting in their praise of Akhtar Shirani’s contribution which has influenced three generations of Urdu poets.

2007, 80 pages, 180x115mm, Paperback ISBN: 978-0-19-547440-4 Rs 75

MajazINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

Majaz was a poet most representative of his age, struggling for independence as well as seeking social emancipation. His poetry, specially his masterpiece ‘Awarah’ (Vagabond) characterizes what we came to identify in the 1960s as the ‘Angry Young man’. He was an asset to the Progressive Writers Movement as attested by all his contemporaries and comrades. Even today, 50 years after his mysterious death, Majaz exercises a spell over every succeeding generation of poets and critics. This volume showcases a selection of his poetry.

2007, 80 pages, 180x115mm, Paperback ISBN: 978-0-19-547439-8 Rs 75

DaghINTIKHAB-E-KALAM

This book contains selected ghazals of Dagh who was the most representative poet of his age. He was a lyrical poet, writing mostly about love themes in pure Urdu idiom. Dagh means stain or wound and Nawab Mirza’s adoption of this non de plume characterizes the nineteenth century idea of the Urdu ghazal as sparking, light, and full of wanton allusions. Yet because he lived in a calamitous age, Dagh also rendered into verse highly perceptive observations bordering on the philosophical and reflective.
