WELCOME TOHALESOWEN COLLEGE

In association with our long-standing partnerships with the

University of Worcester and Newman University, we are

committed to increasing participation and progression routes to Higher Education for the local community. Establishing a University Centre has been an

important step in extending pathways for students who would not otherwise be able to

attain higher qualifications.

The decision to follow a more affordable route into Higher Education, together with the

advantages of being a local and friendly environment, is clearly growing in popularity.

For example, as well as programmes that lead to university for 16-18 year olds, the

Access to Higher Education course is increasingly successful, with hundreds of students

currently taking the opportunity to return to studying at Halesowen College.

The College’s investment in facilities for higher level courses means that more students

will be able to enjoy studying in the locality and fulfil their real potential.

INTRODUCTION TO HIGHER EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

Foundation DegreesFoundation Degrees are vocational higher education qualifications that combine academic and work-based learning. They are designed with the help of employers and are offered in partnership with universities so, upon successful completion, you will receive a university accredited qualification. Employability is a key aspect of Foundation Degree programmes; these programmes will enhance your employment opportunities, and/or allow you to prepare for a career change.

Student finance can consist of grants, loans, and/or allowances, and is intended to help you with tuition fees and living costs, or maintenance, which are the main types of cost you’ll have while you’re studying.

FINANCING YOUR STUDIESIt is important that our courses offer excellent teaching, facilities and student experience at an affordable cost to our students. The most common way to fund your studies is with a full time or part time student tuition loan. This is a loan from Student Finance England that covers your tuition fees. It means that you don’t have to pay anything to the College upfront. In fact, you don’t have to pay anything back until you are earning over £25,000 per year. Your repayments will be 9% of any income above £25000 so the amount you repay every month will depend on your earnings (as long as you have finished and graduated from your course). See www.gov.uk/student-finance for more information.

UK/EU STUDENT COURSE FEESGo to www.halesowen.ac.uk

MAINTENANCE LOANSFull time students are also eligible to apply for maintenance loans to contribute towards living costs. You would start to pay these back at the same time as your tuition fee loan.

GOVERNMENT GRANTSStudents who are entitled to certain benefits will be able to access financial support whether living independently or in the parental home.

DEPENDANTS’ GRANTSFull time students with families are also eligible to apply for government grants for the following:

• Adult Dependants’ Grant• Childcare Grant• Parents’ Learning AllowanceFor more information see www.gov.uk/student-finance/extra-help

DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCEAs a Higher Education student living in England you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance if you have any of the following:• Long Term Health Condition• Mental Health Condition• Specific Learning Difficulty eg. Dyslexia For more information go to www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/further-information

REPAYMENT OF FEESThis is based on your yearly income as follows:

ANNUAL INCOME MONTHLY REPAYMENTS£25,000 and under £0£27,000 £ 15£30,000 £ 37£40,000 £112

• Become a specialist in your field of Photography

Everyone who has a mobile phone has a camera. The images created with them have enhanced the way we communicate. This is not surprising as a photograph is seen and understood quickly. But using Photography this way does not make us Photographers.

This course is ideal if you have had prior experience of studying Photography and want to develop your skills and knowledge further.

As a Professional Photographer adaptability is a key skill, as being a professional is not a nine to five job! You’ll need a positive outlook, be a good communicator, negotiator, planner, business and sales person to name just a few. The ability to work independently is essential, and this is a course requirement.

What will I learn? This course will help you to develop the skills you need and build your confidence in using lighting, appropriate equipment and digital post production techniques. The HND course will help you to understand how to set up a business and make a living doing something that you love.

Having established your area of specialism you will build a portfolio of work, which is the Photographer’s most powerful tool (it is what gets you work), and there will be a strong emphasis on creating this.

As the HND is a vocational course you will be placed in a work environment during your 2nd Year so that you can appreciate the rigours of the profession at first hand.

There are 5 mandatory core units, providing the underpinning knowledge essential for understanding Photography as a working practice and acting as a springboard for further specialised study.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessments

Where can it take me?Those wishing to continue their studies can use this qualification to progress on to a full honours top up degree at many universities, in Photography related subject areas.

What do I need?48 UCAS Points

Applicants should have one of the following:

• A level 3 Vocational qualification in a Photography related subject• 2 or more A Levels, including Photography• A Foundation Diploma in Art & Design with a Photographic pathway• An Access to Higher Education Certificate – Photography pathwayThis profile should be supported by GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths.

Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

After two successful lesson observations, James decided to apply for a full time job with the same charity. He was successful and has now given up his self-employed business and teaches at the charity on a full time basis. He really enjoys passing his skills and knowledge onto the students. Apprenticeships are increasingly being mentioned in the news and it is worth considering if they have anything to offer you as you plan your future.

Apprenticeships used to be predominantly in craft occupations and people entering Apprenticeships often had very modest qualifications after leaving full time education. However, Apprenticeships have moved a long way from this position and can now be viewed as a stepping stone to professional qualifications and senior vocational and managerial careers.

With the average debt for new graduates growing annually, it makes sense to explore other options before embarking on a full time degree course.

As part of the College’s growing Apprenticeships provision we are currently offering Higher Apprenticeships in the following:

• Business & Professional Administration – Level 4• Engineering – Level 4• Healthcare Science Associate – Level 4• IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professional – Level 4• Laboratory Scientist – Level 5• Operations Management – Level 5

To find out how you could combine a paid work placement with working towards a nationally recognised higher qualification go to www.halesowen.ac.uk. Alternatively you can contact one of our Apprenticeships Team by email at [email protected] or phone 0121 602 7770
