About the Forums The Northern Territory (NT) Government has developed a series of sport education forums to assist clubs and coaches build the capacity of their sports to improve participation experiences for athletes from grass roots to elite.
Coaches will hear how to enhance their technical skill development and be exposed to current best practice coaching methods across a range of topics that are practical to implement into any coaching environment.
The Alice Springs and Darwin Forums will include a Coach Masterclass, developed for career coaches or those who have an active role in athlete development within their sport club or school. Participants can attend the full day schedule or choose to only attend the sessions that are most relevant to them.
The key focus of the forums is to assist individuals and clubs who have a passion for developing athletes along a pathway of a life-long involvement in sport.

Patrick Hunt
Australian Institute of Sport - Applied Technical Advancement Coach
Patrick Hunt, AM was one of the initial coaches of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Basketball program and has been with the AIS since its inception in 1981.
Patrick was an Assistant Coach to the Australian Boomers Basketball team (1989-1992) including the Barcelona Olympics and was a member of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Team scouting panel.
Patrick was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia, AM, in 1995 for his services to basketball. In recent years, he has moved into the role of AIS Technical Advancement Coach to provide leadership, advice and expertise in applied technical coaching to assist AIS coaches to achieve sustainable international success.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches in the United States recently presented Patrick with one of two 2012 NABC International Lifetime Achievement Awards. Patrick who is also the current President of the World Association of Basketball Coaches is the first Australian to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Peter Gahan
Australian Baseball Federation - National Manager, Player & Coach
Development
A previous Australian Baseball Coach of the Year, Peter spent 12 years at the helm of player development as Head Coach at the Queensland Academy of Sport.
During this time Peter held a part time position with Baseball Australia on their Major League Baseball Australia Academy Program. The focus of this position was on player and coach development along with all aspects of baseball training.
Peter has spent a number of years as a Baseball International Scout and Player Developer for Cleveland Indians Baseball Club. The position consisted of assisting Major League coaches, coaching at rookie level and scouting Australia and Europe for upcoming talent.
Inducted into the Queensland Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, Peter has spent the last 3 years as National Manager, Player and Coaching Development at the Australian Baseball Federation.

Bill Sweetenham
International High Performance Swimming Coach
Bill Sweetenham, AM has served as head coach of national swimming teams at 5 Olympic Games for 3 different countries, and has coached swimmers to success at 9 World Championships, 8 Commonwealth Games and 27 individual long course Olympic and World Championship podium finishes.
Bill was the first state director of coaching for Queensland, and went on to serve as head swimming coach of Australian
Swimming, head coach at both the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and Hong Kong Sports Institute and National youth coach for Australian Swimming (1995-2000).
As head coach and national performance director of British Swimming (2000 to 2007), British swimmers won 18 World Championship titles, and produced their best ever Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games results.
Bill’s current position is as consultant to Olympic and World Championship head coaches through the Australian Sports Commission. Bill is a member of the Order of Australia and a Churchill Fellow.
Carol Byers
Netball Australia - Head of High Performance
Carol Byers is a highly accredited coach on the Netball circuit, having most recently held positions with Netball Australia as the coach and athlete development manager and currently as the head of high performance. Carol’s previous coaching roles have included the Australian
Institute of Sport and the Western Australian Institute of Sport,
before moving onto the head coaching role at Victorian Fury and
becoming ANL Premiers in 2008-2010. Carol has also held assisting coaching
roles at Phoenix and Melbourne Vixens Netball Teams.

Presenter Profiles
Bronwyn’s story includes a PhD in Sport Science and Honours in Psychology. She
was formerly Captain of the South African Netball Team and played at two
Commonwealth Games. Bronwyn is a high performance accredited netball coach,
and her other achievements include coach and athlete development at Netball ACT
and lecturing in Sport Science at Stellenbosch University.
Darwin born and bred, Duncan moved to Sydney at 16 to pursue a career in rugby
league with the Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Duncan also played
in France, England and in four test matches for Scotland, two of them in the 2008
Rugby League World Cup. Duncan returned to Darwin in 2009 and briefly worked
as a Development Officer for NT Rugby League before taking up the position as
NTIS rugby league coach.
An Alice Springs local, Nick has experienced many facets of the player and coach
pathway having his first hockey experience through school, representing Alice
Springs Senior Men as a 12 year old. Nick has also played and coached
professionally in Belgium and was the High Performance Manager with Hockey SA.
He was part of the first ever Youth Olympic Games Australian Hockey team who
won gold. Nick returned to Darwin in 2012 to join the NTIS coaching team.

Presenter Profiles
Tony Judd is a Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)
Level 3 accredited cricket coach. His previous roles include Performance Analyst to
Cricket Scotland, Scottish National Coach (2001-2004), Assistant Coach for the
Tasmanian Tigers Southern based Sheffield Shield squad (1996-2000) and State
Manager of Coaching and Development in Tasmania. He has also been involved
with First Class and International cricket over the past 10 years with Scotland.
Chris is an experienced strength and conditioning coach and has worked
extensively with athletes from netball, AFL, hockey and tenpin bowling. His primary
area of interest is physical competence development for the developing athlete.
Chris has a Bachelor in Physical Education, Exercise and Sports Medicine and is
currently undertaking his Masters in Exercise and Sports Science, Strength and
Conditioning.
Liz has worked with elite tennis players since 2000 both in Australia and
Internationally. She has a background in tennis, swimming and lecturing at both
Charles Darwin University and the University of Ballarat. Her primary areas of
interest are the factors that lead to elite performance both in and out of sport such
as attitude, motivation, determination, persistence, visualisation.

Presenter Profiles
Greg’s journey includes degrees in Science and Physiotherapy and a Masters in
Sports Physiotherapy. He has 7 years servicing the Australian and British
Defence Forces, as well as working in private practice across Australia. The past
7 years have seen Darwin as his home where he has toured with NT Rugby
Union (Men's and Schoolboys) and NT AFL (Under 16’s, 18’s and seniors). He
transferred from Head Physiotherapist at NT Thunder FC to the NTIS in January
2013.
Tim has 24 years experience as an athlete and coach of individual endurance
sports and prior to this excelled at Rugby League. He has 10 years experience
coaching all disciplines of cycling (road, track, BMX, MTB) at the junior level and
was the NTIS head coach for cycling for 3 years. Tim is currently the junior athlete
development manager for Triathlon NT, a National junior coach of MTB XC and
consults to the NTIS as a strength and conditioning coach and athlete
development specialist.

About the Program
Planning a Curriculum of Skills - Bronwyn Jonathon
Athletes’ skills should be developed through a sequential program. This could be
done through individual, small group and/or team sessions. The curriculum of
skills provides a framework for coaches to plan their weekly contact sessions and
ensures all components of the sport are addressed within the team environment.
Training Session Video Analysis & Review - Duncan MacGillivray
Video analysis of training sessions and matches provides an opportunity to analyse the following aspects of performance: player work rate, tackle count, foul play, coach communication style and player communication.
From a team or player performance perspective, all issues can be measured. Coaches and players can gauge levels of commitment and confidence while team cohesion, for example, may be gauged upon levels of discipline, motivation and punctuality.
Getting the Most Out of Individual Sessions - Optimum Learning
Environments - Tony Judd
During this session Tony will explain how he identifies the needs of the individuals
in cricket and designs sessions and learning methods to reach the desired
outcomes for both the coach and the individual.
Replicating Game Demands In Training - Nick Lenoir
Based on GPS data collected in the previous National Championship, we will look
at how through the use of GPS and heart rate monitors, Nick manipulated the
length of drills and rest periods to get desired training intensity to replicate a game
in the lead up to the 2013 National U18 hockey championships.
Fostering Mental Toughness in Athletes - Liz Grylls
Liz will provide take home tips on building confidence in athletes. Learning how to
instil resilience and perseverance in the face of difficult situations, such as,
challenging training sessions, poor performance, performance plateau, and injury.
Practical Methods of Developing Athletes - Tim Ellison and Peter Gahan
Tim and Peter will discuss athlete case studies that encompass all areas of
technical, tactical, physical and psychological development from under age to
open age levels of competition.
Applied Nutrition - Energy In VS Energy Out - Tim Ellison
Tim will provide a “how to” guide that coaches can use to enhance the day to day
nutritional habits of the athletes they work with.
Running Mechanics - Michael Watkins
Explore the optimum running technique for any type of running sport, from sprints,
middle and long distance running through to team sports. Participants who
attended and enjoyed the Frans Bosch workshop in July 2013, will enjoy this
session.

About the Program
Assessing and Improving Athlete Movement - Greg Dea and Chris Dowling
Part 1 (Theory) - Movement serves the basis of all athletic endeavours. This
session will provide an overview of the basic movement screens used to identify
athletic potential or lack thereof.
Part 2 (Practical) - This session will provide practical and simple methods that
coaches can use to screen for movement function in the athletes they work with.
Physical Development for Young Athletes - Tim Ellison and Peter Gahan
This session will provide both theoretical and practical methods that coaches can
use to enhance the physical competence of athletes and how this relates to future
sport specific skill execution.
