Polish Highlinders live in the Tatra Mountain regions of Poland and Slovakia. The Polish highlanders

preserve many distinctive customs typical only for their region. A group of students from our school visited some

ethnografic museums in the biggest city in the Tatra Mountains –

Zakopane. Now I will present what they learned there.

HIGHLAND FOLK OUTFITS

Traditional  highland folk outfit for women consists of : * a white cotton blouse with embroidered patterns* a long flowery skirt* an embroidered corset* moccasins (kierpce)* wood beads * a flowery woolen  shawl

Traditional  highland folk outfit for men consists of :

* white felt trousers with embroidered patterns* a white linen shirt* a cape* a black waistcoat* a hat with a wide brim* moccasins (kierpce) or boots* a leather belt

The Polish Highlanders still preserve a few of their traditional dances,

including the Goralski – a dance for couples and Zbojnicki – a dance commemorating the mountain

outlaws. The music for the dances is played on a pair of fiddles, a cello, and  sometimes a bagpipe. All of

their songs are quite difficult to play or dance without extensive

experience.
