OnMarch3,HPWBANAwillholdaSafetyMeetingattheYarbrough library. The goal of this meeting is to build thisnetworkofneighbors.

Keeping HPWBANA Cool: An Update
In the December newsletter an article appeared about the littleyellowflags showingup inyards around theneighborhood. Theeffort, part of the City’s Urban Heat Island Mitigation initiative,aimedtoplanttreesalongpublicrightsofwaytoincreaseshadingin neighborhoods and reduce energy bills while beautifying thecommunity. Thisprojectalreadyappearstobeunderway.Someofourneighborsarealreadystartingtoseetheyoungtreesintheiryards.Infact,oneneighbormentionedthatonehomehasabout6newtrees! TheCityofAustinhasrecentlyhiredaconsultant,GaryLiss&Associates,todevelopastrategytoachievethisgoal.Theplanisexpectedtoincludewaystoreducewastedisposal,andimprovelocalrecyclingandcompostingcapabilities. Withthismove,AustinfollowsothercitiessuchasSanFranciscoandSeattlethatcurrentlyhaveoraredevelopingzerowasteplans.Currently,Austin diverts 30% of its trash from the landfills torecycling. Thezerowasteplanwouldreducegarbagesent to thelandfillsby20%by2012andachievezerowasteby2040.
