St. Andrew’s, an independent college preparatory school dedicated to personalized student development, strives to develop engaged, well-rounded individuals by inspiring a passion for knowledge, a commitment to personal integrity and a deepened social consciousness within a supportive educational community.

We certainly had a busy summer with camps, construction and campus improvements. One exciting campus activity was our newly formed partnership with Horizons, an academic, cultural and recreational summer enrichment program designed for students from a diverse, low-income population. Making a mark, our own Madison Mitchell ’16 was recognized by Horizons as the most outstanding student volunteer this summer for the entire Savannah area. That is what I consider the St. Andrew’s way - realizing your potential to make a difference.

Over the summer, physical improvements include renovated restrooms in Skinner Hall and Compton Gym, further upgrades to student community spaces and a continued focus on clearing brush to make the school more visible and inviting.

The stars were aligned as all the “elements” fell into place for our biggest summer

project - a STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) lab in the Johnson Lower School.

• Neil Johnson, whom the building is named for, chaired the campaign for raising funds.

• Alum Leigh Smith ’95 served as the project manager on behalf of JT Turner Construction.

• Two lead donors came forward - Josh & Kelly Keller and Jim Sheffield.

This successful project transformed 1,500 square feet of existing space into a multi-purpose lab and classroom equipped with teleconferencing capabilities. This was truly a collaborative effort from start to finish.

In this Highlander you will find photos

from the unveiling of the lab and students wasting no time to get their hands dirty in the new space.

You will also get a quick glimpse into campus life. From opening day to homecoming, we have included everything from academics, arts and athletics. We are off to a great start and have high expectations for our 37th year on Wilmington Island. Here’s to a new year beyond textbooks and classrooms.

I went on a marvelous trip with my class to the great Blue Ridge Camp where we went kayaking, hiking, and had an amazing bonfire filled with a bunch of s’mores. As soon as we got there we unpacked our bags and then explored the new area that we would

be staying for the next 3 days. You wouldn’t believe the amazing sights! We were surrounded by nature and everywhere you looked you could see mountains in the distance.

- Amber Dutson ’18

When I first started school at St. Andrew’s just a year ago, I was unfamiliar with the much-anticipated class trips. Coming from a school where each class was composed of over three hundred students, it wasn’t necessarily possible to hold week-long trips for a total of twelve hundred students. Ever since I arrived, however, I’d heard stories about the famous Senior Venture, and I have to admit I had mixed feelings.

This trip was a time during which I had some of the best fun I’ve ever had. I hadn’t been camping before, and I don’t think I expected to have so

much fun sleeping in the woods and hiking all day, but it also gave me a chance to spend more time with my still relatively new classmates. On the ride back, we all eagerly swapped stories and bonded, if you will, over shared experiences. It was truly an invaluable experience, made all the more treasured because of the fact that I would not have been able to do anything like it if I had chosen to attend a different school.

- Taylor Eling’15

The STEM iLab is a challenging, hands-on learning community where students and teachers engage in the authentic integration of science, technology, engineering and math. The space, located in the Johnson Center, is officially now open for instruction. Donors and friends were

on hand to dedicate the space with a ribbon cutting. Next time you are on campus, stop by and see us in action in our new iLab!

The Admissions Office has selected Middle School Ambassadors for this school year. These young men and women host prospective students, assist with Open House activities and help spread the word about St. Andrew’s.

Women Wow the AudienceThis fall, theatre students gave an amazing performance of the Greek tragedy, The Trojan Women. First performed in 415 BC, the play fol-lows the fates of Hecuba, Andromache, Cassandra and the women of Troy after the city has been destroyed. Still to come from the Fine Arts Department is Peter Pan and The Music Man.
