The Indian economy is expected to gather steam and expand by 7.2 percent in 2018 and further rise to 7.4 percent in 2019, driven by robust private consumption, public investment and structural reforms that are in progress according to a United Nations report released on 11 December 2017. This UN's stable outlook for the Indian economy came despite the slowdown observed early this year due to the effects from demonetisation and the confusion spurred by the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) -- suggesting that the economy is gradually adjusting with the changes. Earlier, even Morgan Stanley projected India's economy to accelerate to 7.5 percent in 2018 from current 6.3 percent and further rise to 7.7 percent in 2019. Asia's third-largest economy expanded 6.3 percent in the July to September period from a year earlier, bouncing back from a three-year low economic growth of 5.7 percent in the previous quarter. INDIA PLANS WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR-WIND

INDIAN SKILLS SERVICE TO BE SET UP SOON

The Indian Civil Services will soon establish a new cadre that will recognize skills and their development, much like the other cadres such as the IAS, IFS, and IRS. “Skills fall under a niche domain, which requires a different level of understanding about the related issues. Understanding the required skills and ensuring that they have a global connect and necessary partnerships is a separate field. The government is working on setting up a separate cadre for skills,” Anant Kumar Hegde, Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said at Mail Today’s Skills and Entrepreneurship Summit held on 8 December 2017.

ENVIGREEN BIOTECH'S DEVELOPS ORGANIC PLASTIC-LIKE BAGS

The quest to plug the proliferation of plastic has inspired a coterie of entrepreneurs to look for eco-friendly alternatives. "It looks exactly like a plastic bag, but is anything but that," claims Ashwath Hegde, who founded EnviGreen Biotech in August 2016. "Made with natural starch and vegetable derivatives, it is completely biodegradable," he adds. EnviGreen Biotech's "plastic-like" bags are 100% organic, recyclable - and even edible for animals.

These bags degrade naturally when discarded and cause no harm to animals if they consume it. They might pass off as plastic bags to the uninitiated, but are completely non-toxic to the environment.  Although marginally costlier than plastic bags, EG bags are not only eco- friendly and durable, but also engage a farming community. "We work in tandem with farmersin Karnataka from whom we procure vegetable wastes and other raw materials," says Hegde. "In addition to becoming an alternate source of income for them, it also helps us bring down costs and make our products more affordable for the masses," he adds.

SHREE DWARKADHISH TEMPLE  Originally believed to be built by Vajranabh, the great grandson of Lord Krishna, more than 2500 years ago, it is a glorious structure seeming to rise from the waters of the Arabian Sea. Its exquisitely carved shikhar, reaching 43 m high and the huge flag made from 52 yards of cloth, can be seen from as far away as 10 km. The lower part of the Dwarkadhish temple is from the 16th century and the soaring steeple with its numerous clusters of small towers is from the 19th century.

In last two editions we covered places of tourist interest in Ahmedabad city of Gujarat. In this edition we are covering some more important places to visit in Gujarat.

SOMNATH TEMPLE The Somnath temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, is believed to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.  Destroyed and reconstructed several times in the past, the present temple, envisioned by Vallabhbhai Patel,  was reconstructed in May 1951. While inaugurating the temple, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President said, "The Somnath temple signifies that the power of reconstruction is always greater than the power of destruction”.
