TOP HONOURS FOR MICROSOFT IMAGINE CUP SINGAPORE

Team HeartSound – made up of three students from our Schools of Engineering and Information Technology – emerged champions at the Singapore leg of the global Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. Their device, The Smart StethoScope, combines the functions of both a stethoscope and an electrocardiography machine into a small wearable device. It helps monitor abnormal heart sounds, so that users can track their own heart health without the need for additional medical training or knowledge. They also bagged second place at the Southeast Asian portion of the competition, and received the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation’s Award for Best Innovative ICT Student Project. They went on to the Finals in the US.

SOUND BUSINESS ADVICE

The annual NYP Business Lecture 2017 was held on May 24 with Mr Tan Tong Hai, chairman of NYP’s Board of Governors, as the distinguished speaker. Mr Tan was then also StarHub’s CEO. He and other panellists took on questions that ranged from the attributes of successful entrepreneurs, to working with millennials, and the challenges of running a company. The event was also meant to encourage entrepreneurial and innovative mindsets. More than 900 industry guests, staff and students attended the event.

FEEL THE EXHIBITION

The School of Interactive & Digital Media was invited by the ArtScience Museum Singapore to showcase an interactive installation. The result was a playful and whimsical exhibition that explored interpersonal relationships between humans and technology. It had a series of body parts that visitors could touch, tickle, pinch or squeeze, which then elicited different reactions from the digital actor on the screen.

LEARNING THE NYP WAY

Onsite book selections, hands-on activities and live demonstrations had the NYP Atrium abuzz with more than 600 participants at the inaugural Learning Fiesta on May 17. Themed “Learning – The Way of Life in NYP”, the fiesta was put together by the Library and Human Resource departments to encourage staff and students to maximise usage of the library’s resources and services.

ACTS OF GREEN

As environment champions of our student body, the GEO Council, in collaboration with NParks, organised NYP Earth Day 2017 to demonstrate that every small act of kindness counts. They mobilised student volunteers from Anderson and Hougang Secondary Schools to rejuvenate Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Working together, the students planted new shrubs, cleaned up flower beds, removed litter and engaged park users on mosquito-breeding prevention strategies.

SPREAD THE WORD

Our students from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences’ Diploma in Food Science & Nutrition racked up another victory at the World Dairy Innovation Awards 2017. Their creation, the Camooringa Moringa and Carrot Milk Spread, won the award for Best Butter or Dairy Spread. It was meant to be a healthier alternative to our usual sugar-laden breakfast spreads. The packaging was designed by students from the School of Design.

NURSING TRAINING FOR GLOBAL STUDENTS

The School of Health Sciences conducted over 10 nursing programmes for international participants from China, Mongolia, Philippines and Sri Lanka. Participants learnt different techniques in emergency, medical-surgical and gerontology nursing. There were also discussions about public health and nursing management.

LAUNCH OF NEXT-GEN CASHLESS AND UNMANNED STORE

The School of Business Management worked with NTUC FairPrice to launch Singapore’s first cashless and unmanned convenience store on July 28. The event was graced by Minister for Trade & Industry, Mr S. Iswaran. Here, technologies such as QR codes, video analytics and e-payment are deployed to free students from daily operational tasks. This moves them up the value-chain and engages them in more strategic efforts to drive the success of the store. They now study customer needs, and predict cycles using data analytics to develop and implement digital strategies.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS

Two School of Design projects were conferred the Red Dot Award, an international product design and communication design prize awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. The students – from the Diplomas in Space & Interior Design and Visual Communication – won for their projects, Clockwork Stories and Black Organs, respectively. The Red Dot Award was awarded to only 6 per cent of the 4,724 entries that year, making it an outstanding accomplishment for our students.

BUILDING INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS

The Library teamed up with the School of Business Management to develop the first-ever NYP Business Information Literacy learning initiative. Close to 600 SBM students played ‘web detectives’ to pick up effective online search skills. This collaboration adopted a student-centred experiential learning approach with gamified challenges.

MAKING EXPERIENCES EDUCATIONAL

The School of Design, supported by NYP’s Centre for Professional & Leadership Development, jointly organised the inaugural Learning Experience Design Conference Asia 2017 in November. They worked with Shapers, a leading organisation in the Netherlands on designing educational experiences. Close to a hundred participants attended the conference. Among the highlights, participants learnt how to use the Learning Experience Canvas – an online tool to design better learning experiences.

NYP’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY MUSICAL

Our musical, Emerge, was a fitting finale to the year-long celebration of NYP’s silver jubilee. Directed by our very own alumnus, Pua Jin Wen, from the School of Interactive & Digital Media, it was a 90-minute musical extravaganza. More than 230 students and alumni showcased their talents. Besides performing, they also took on production roles in stage management, props and wardrobe, while guided by industry practitioners.

OUR REFRESHED MISSION, VISION & STRATEGIC GOALS

NYP unveiled our new Mission, Vision and Strategic Goals at the Staff Conference in November. This final piece of 2017’s strategic planning exercise is the result of our engagement with colleagues and all stakeholder groups over 10 months. This plan encompasses our collective aspiration for NYP and will guide us in our work as we continue to provide strong support for our learners’ lifelong learning and value creation for the industry.

BIOCONVERSION OF COFFEE WASTE TO BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS

Dr Henry Leung, from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, found a sustainable way to turn coffee waste into bioplastic. He used bacteria that, when combined with coffee grounds, produced polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which are biodegradable. This bacteria was genetically modified to get a higher yield of PHAs after purification. PHAs are more environmentally-friendly because they decompose faster, and release fewer toxic compounds in the process.

NYP CARES – TRAINING FOR ACADEMIC STAFF

As part of NYP’s Pastoral Care Development Roadmap, our Human Resource department launched the inaugural intermediate-level pastoral care programme: The Inspiring Educator II – Connect to Empower. The training programme will span a few years during which, all our academic staff will complete the entire suite of bespoke training modules.
