It is an exciting time of the year for the CSULA Upward Bound Programs. As the end of the school year nears, we have been focusing on making sure our participants finish the year academically strong by offering them academic support through our Study Hall, Saturday Academy and Academic Advising. With regards to our 12 th grade participants, we are excited to announce that they have all commied to enroll in postsecondary education in fall 2015, please take a look at page 4 of the newsleer to learn where each participant will be enrolling this fall. Congratulations to all of them. I am proud of their academic accomplishments and wish them a successful postsecondary education journey. We are also gearing up for our busiest time of the year. Greetings TRIO family! It is an exciting time of the

year for the CSULA Upward Bound Programs. As

the end of the school year nears, we have been

focusing on making sure our participants finish

the year academically strong by offering them

academic support through our Study Hall,

Saturday Academy and Academic Advising. With regards to our 12th

grade participants, we are excited to announce that they have all

committed to enroll in postsecondary education in fall 2015, please take a

look at page 4 of the newsletter to learn where each participant will be

enrolling this fall. Congratulations to all of them. I am proud of their

academic accomplishments and wish them a successful postsecondary

education journey.

We are also gearing up for our busiest time of the year. Our rising 9th, 10th,

11th, and 12th grade participants will continue with us this summer as part

Announcements

Scholarships / Recognitions Cal State L.A. TRIO Upward Bound & Upward Bound Math/Science Programs

Gates Millennium Scholar:

Kimberly Mejia, a senior from Muir has been awarded the Gates Millennium

Scholarship. This scholarship gives Kimberly the opportunity to make her choice

of which college to attend without having to think about the financial aspect as

that is taken care of by the Gates Millennium Scholarship. This scholarship will

help pay for all of tuition for 10 years. It also pays for graduate work in the fields

of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics,

public health or science. This scholarship is focused on creating leaders in their

fields that can help solve future global problems. Kimberly was one of the thirty

Edison Scholars awarded the Edison scholarship. This scholarship of $40,000 is

paid over the course of four years. It is for students pursuing studies in

engineering, math, technology, and science. In addition, Kimberly also received

the SanDisk ($10,000), and WESTOP Student Leadership Scholarship. Kimberly

will be attending University of California, Berkeley.

Congresswoman Judy Chu Internship

Congratulations!!! Upward Bound staff is

extremely proud of Daniel Teixeira-Pinto,

a rising 12th grade student who will be an

intern this summer in Congresswoman

Judy Chu’s office. Judy Chu was elected

to the U.S. House of Representatives in

July 2009. She represents the 27th Congressional

District, which includes Pasadena and the west San

Gabriel Valley of southern California. We are sure this

internship will be of great benefit, as Daniel will be

serving his community and will pursue a law degree in

the future. Good Luck and enjoy your internship

UC Irvine Premed Program

Cesar Escobedo has been selected as a par-

ticipant in UC Irvine’s Summer pre-med

program. Cesar will get a chance to attend

lectures given by UC Irvine faculty. Along

with workshops that are designed to give

him hands on experience in the medical

field. This is a great chance to see what it’s

like being a medical student first hand.

Enrichment Activities

Cal State L.A. TRIO Upward Bound & Upward Bound Math/Science Programs

Spring Retreat 2015

Fifty-five students were selected to travel and

visit various east coast universities; such as Ivy

Leagues. In addition to visiting prestigious

universities, students visited New York city,

New Jersey, Massachusetts, and attended a

Wicked Broadway Show.

Fair, all TRIO students attended National Association

for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) College

Fair assisting with the whole process of finding, ap-

plying, and paying for college.

The College Fair gave students a chance to meet with

representatives from various colleges and institu-

tions, nation wide and international universities ,

such as Europe and China.
