The OPSEU Live and Let Live Fund (Charitable tax) is dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa and Ontario. The fund donates 75 per cent to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, dedicated to working with grassroots organizations in Africa. Since 2003 SLF has funded over 1100 initiatives, partnering with over 300 communi-ty-based organizations in 15 countries (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org). The fund also donates 20 per cent to the Ontario AIDS Network (remaining fi ve per cent administra-tion). (2003 convention motion – dedicated fundraising by OPSEU locals, and individual member donations, annual fl uctuating donations)

The OPSEU Social Justice Fund provides funding to projects that support trade unions, community groups, indigenous rights, and women’s rights with a focus on: education, health, water, fi ghting poverty and building a stronger civil society. (2003 convention motion - 0.48 cents per member, $65,000 year)

Bangladesh April 24 – 1st Year Anniversary since the factory collapse

On April 24, 2013 an eight-story Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, collapsed, killing over 1,138 and injuring approximately 2000 garment workers (mostly young women).

The Accord on Fire and Building safety in Bangladesh, was launched - a legally binding agreement between in-ternational trade unions IndustriALL and UNI Global, Bangladesh trade unions, and international brands and retailers.

On the fi rst anniversary since the tragedy the Canadian Labour Congress asked the Government of Canada to endorse the Accord. The Accord requires companies to pay up to $500,000 annually to administer inspections, retailers commit to ensuring that repairs are carried out, and that workers at these factories continue to be paid a salary. Workers have the right to refuse unsafe work (http://www.cleanclothes.org).

OPSEU joined 25 labour and human rights groups calling on Canadian retailers to sign the Accord. Loblaw (owner of Joe Fresh), is the only Canadian company that has signed on.

Cambodia odia Brutal state repression against striking garment workers demanding an end to poverty wages

In December 2013 Cambodian unions called a national strike demanding a monthly raise of $160 USD per month. The Cambodian government responded to the workers with violence and intimidation. Four workers were killed, 39 were injured and 23 arrested. Workers making $100 a month report shocking levels of malnutrition amongst the mainly young female workforce.

OPSEU along with many other organizations condemned the violence perpetuated by members of the police and armed forces against striking garment workers.

The Canada Columbia Free Trade Agreement Since signing the free-trade agreement with Colombia in 2008, Canada has stood by as gross human rights violations persist including targeted murders of trade unionists, displacement of indigenous communities and land grabs. Canadian mining continue companies reap the benefi ts. Canada also began selling automatic weapons — the kind banned in Canada — and light armoured vehicles since the agreement while para-mil-itary groups and the army, continue to target civil society organizations.

In 2013 some 70 human rights defenders were killed, including Indigenous and Afro-descendant leaders, as were at least 27 members of trade unions. More than fi ve million people have fl ed their homes during the course of the confl ict.

Amnesty International is calling on the government to extend the mandate of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for a further three years.

Canadian and American companies that have refused to sign: • GAP• Canadian Tire

(owner of Mark’s and Sport Check)

• Giant Tiger• Hudson’s Bay

Company

• Sears Canada• Walmart• YM Inc

(owner of Suzy Shier, Stiches, Bluenotes, Urban Planet, Sirens)
