This verse has beenour theme for 2015 atWestminster CUCC.What does that have todo with Stewardship? The definition of stewardship is the management orcare of something, particularly the kind ofmanagement or care that works. The responsibleoverseeing and protection of something consideredworth caring for and preserving. Does that describehow you see and feel about Westminster? If so, thenyou are a steward.

Westminster Congregational United Church ofChrist is a treasure. It is worth investing in. Our

congregation and community would have a void if wewere not doing our work.

As a Trustee of Westminster, I am part of a teamthat works to manage our resources to take care of theChurch of Westminster and share with our community.

Stewardship is bigger than just Westminster. We,as a people of faith, have a responsibility to manageour personal resources so that they work.

We all have resources, both financial and our timeand talents. How are we managing them? Are we usingthose things for personal gain or as a means to sharewith our community and world to make it a betterplace?

As we come up on the end of 2015, it is exciting to

see that those who have pledged have not forgottentheir promise by faith. For the first time in years, everyone is giving toward their pledge. Praise God!

We have dropped a bit behind in September, soif things have gotten hectic and you have forgottenthat faith promise, we need all of us to continue thework we are called to do.

Our God is faithful! Sometimes we don’t havebecause we don’t ask. God has blessed Westminsterthis year with unforeseen resources and perhaps

this has been your personal experience as well. When we are responsible stewards of thoseresources, like when we as parents give moreresponsibility to our kids, God does likewise.Westminster is worth caring about and investing in.

Oh God, help us to be good stewards in ourpersonal lives and for your Church! Amen.

There is nothing quite like the birth of a child to make you take stock of this life. I know that the birth ofeach of my granddaughters has made me want to fight even harder for a better world for them. The birth ofa child brings into sharp focus how much we need to do, for all the children. God’s promises are of a worldshining with love and peace, in harmony. This is the vision.

But it is hard work, and sometimes it seems overwhelming, there are so many social and planetary ills!

This is where comes in; because at there are other fighters who share in the vision of God,and we find encouragement in one another.

The people of Westminster UCC are fighters and visionaries for sure. They take on many ministries of love and charity; whether it isorganizing Christmas gifts for 8,000 people at The Tree of Sharing;or whether it is meals for homeless families through FamilyPromise; or whether it is Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors. They are fighters when they support our children as Sunday Schoolteachers, run Lego League, have a teens program each week. Theyare fighters and visionaries when they take on homophobia, racism, transphobia; when they step up to help clean-up our Spokane Riveror help clean-up our neighborhood. They are fighters for workers’rights, for a living wage, for a less violent city, a more just city.

The people of Westminster give to each other as well. We supporteach other in sickness and in loss. We try to offer meaningfulassistance in mental health crises, in work crises, in times ofisolation or confusion. We play together too; whether we are havingan All-Church Birthday Party, the FUNraiser, or a weekend at N-Sid-Sen Camp and Conference Center. Weekly, we feed each other onSunday with delicious varieties of goodies, and we feed each otherwith friendship and support.

Looking at this community of faith, I see many wonderful people anda richness of giving and sharing that is a sign of hope for all thechildren.

I know it is hard work to raise children, and it is hard work to be achurch! But Westminster is strong, is built on faith, hope and love;and Westminster endures. God blesses us with one another, andstrengthens us to continue on, as fighters for a world of love andjustice, mercy and forgiveness, peace and plenty for all.

I am proud to serve with you, as we seek to make this world a placefit for our children, a place shining with the love of God.

Karen Wilson-Bell and her husband, Justin Bell, went with a group from the Spokane UnitarianUniversalist Church to visit our partner church inTransylvania in September. We were part of thecelebration of that church’s 220th

anniversary. The celebrationincluded races of work horsespulling logs or crude carts, barebackriding in the pouring rain, a goulashcook-off, a soccer match, and acultural program including singing, dancing, costumes, and comedy actson Saturday.

The Sunday church serviceincluded several sermons (one in English), HolyCommunion, hymns and choral numbers (two inEnglish) and poetry recitations. Most of the ladies weredressed in their traditional costumes. Most of the menwore suits. The service lasted more than three hours!Afterward the members and guests walked across thestreet for a social time with kalacs(pastries, shown at right) and glasses ofpalinka. Following the social hour, everyone walked down the unpaved streetto the dedication of the new Funeral House.Sunday evening there was a huge catereddinner at the Community House.

While we were in the village, some of us stayed withlocal families, and some of us stayed in the guest house.During our time in the village we visited the elementaryschool, the pre-school, the lumber mill, one of the localweavers, friends who were putting up corn for theirlivestock, and the local shops. The children from theelementary school put on a special program of singingand dancing and recitations for us. The weavers gaveeach church a hand-woven table runner with stripes in arainbow of colors (shown at bottom). We will place ourson the Communion Table on March 6, when wecelebrate our Felsőrákos Sunday.

What we have in common, is not necessarily a commonlanguage about God, but a common need for spirituality, tofeel fully human. So, we will come together every Sunday inthe Mayflower room at 5:30 pm, to praise and worship, tosing, to pray, to share Christ’s love. In The Lounge you are safeto explore your faith, your spirituality and your relationshipwith Christ. In The Lounge you are safe to come as you are andbe who you are.

Come to The Lounge and find a relaxing and safe space with Christ.
