THE MOST DANGEROUS THREAT

Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights; it holds a legal mo-

nopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims. When unlimited and

unrestricted by individual rights, a government is man's deadliest enemy. It is not as protec-

tion against private actions, but against governmental actions that the Bill of Rights was

written. -- Ayn Rand, "The Virtue of Selfishness," 1964

PRESIDENT’S LETTER PENNSYLVANIA, A SHOOTER’S STATE

How was your summer? For some, it marked a fantastic accomplishment, the reaching of a goal,

going for and finding the gold. Several Pennsylvania shooters set their sights many years ago to become

the best that they possibly could be. This past summer proved that such a goal can be reached with much

work and dedication. We have our own Jamie (Beyerle) Gray from Lebanon, Pa. to prove that point.

Jamie is the Olympic Gold Medal winner in Women’s 50-Meter Three Position Rifle. Jamie also set a

new Olympic record for this event with a total score of 691.9. She was quoted as saying, “That last shot

is probably one of the hardest shots to take.” Her concentration and determination produced a 10.8 score

for her final shot in the event. (10.9 is the highest value possible) Jamie, commenting on her last shot

said, “---and I took a good shot, that was the big thing. Sometimes you come down on target and you

just take a shot and it’s like, ‘Uh, I don’t know where that is.’ But I knew it was a good one. It looked

good and it felt good, so yeah, it was awesome!” (Young shooters take note.) And after all of those

years of training, work, tears and dedication, Jamie has reached her goal. What a wonderful accomplishment! To all of you young shooters,

take Jamie as an example. Follow her path. It may be long and tough and tearful but it can lead you to heights you never realized you could

ever reach.

We also have another Pennsylvania champion. One who is well known in the world of Hi-Power Rifle competition. Carl R. Bernosky

from Ashland, PA is someone I have known since his teen-age years when he won the PA State Junior Hi-Power title. Since then he has be-

come a champion of champions. And this year at Camp Perry he won his 10 th. NRA National Hi-Power Rifle Championship title. Carl took

the championship (The Mumma Trophy) with a score of 2391-141X. That means that Carl shot out of the 10 ring only enough times to drop

9 points for the entire series of matches making up the total. That’s 240 shots for record from distances of 200 through 600 yards and shoot-

ing from three different positions. During the week-long event, Carl also took first place in six other individual matches. Carl was quoted as

saying, “Five or six years ago you could have a bad match and come back from it. But you can’t do that anymore. You have to be hard all

the way through.” Wow, ten national titles and I’ll bet Carl might say that he is still improving. Just like a good wine, Carl just gets better

with age.

Don’t forget the presidential election is coming up in November. This may be the most important election in our history. (At least that I

can remember) With the way the country has been going, we may see the destruction of our Constitution (at least severe damage) if the

wrong people get elected or reelected. Get out and vote for Freedom. If we could get all those hunters and gun-owners from PA and the na-

tion to register and vote for candidates who believe in Freedom, the Constitution and a Capitalistic society and whose goals are to reduce the

size of government, lower taxes and spending, we could begin to return to the type of country we once expected. Talk to your friends and

neighbors. Get involved. We may not get too many more chances to turn this country around. Remember, even if you feel it isn’t worth it or

that it won’t affect you, do it “For the Kids “!

David J. Cramer

April 11, 1943 - August 30, 2012

Dave Cramer started shooting with an NRA Junior Rifle Program while in high

school in Homer City, Pa. While an undergraduate at Indiana University of Pennsyl-

vania he was named NRA Collegiate All American, the first for that school.

Soon after graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army

Quartermaster Corps. After completing his Officer training he was assigned to

Vietnam during 1967-1968. Returning to the United States in 1969 he found himself

assigned to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Ga. He was

on the International Rifle Team. Upon leaving active duty he joined the US Army

Reserve where he successfully shot both Internationa l and Service Rifle, compiling an

impressive shooting resume. He eventually was the Officer in Charge of the USAR

International Shooting Team which he served on for 24 years, retiring as Lt. Colo-

nel.

His shooting interest was not confined to just firearms as he also was a member

of the U.S. Armburst Team shooting the match crossbow in the international rifle style. He won numerous international l awards in

this being awarded the Distinquished Armburst Badge which is added to his International Distinquished Shooters Badge , U.S.

Army Distinquished Rifleman Badge, both Smallbore Prone and Position Distinquished Badge.

Among Cramer’s other shooting accomplishments are the 1967 and 1977 Nationa l Indoor Conventional Smallbore Rifle Cham-

pion, the 1972 National Trophy High Power Individua l Rifle Champion, President’s Hundred Tab-Rifle, 1975 National Men’s Air

Rifle Champion, 1983 National 1000 yard Team Championship, Intermediate Senior Smallbore Position Champion, Intermediate

Senio National Smallbore Prone Champion, and Senior Prone Smallbore Rifle Champion, Penna. State Four Position State

Champion numerous times. Dave shot indoor Smallbore Rifle for the Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club in the Pittsburgh Suburban

Rifle. He won the high individual award numerous times in two Pittsburgh Area Rifle Leagues. He went I believe like 15 years

straight without dropping a point kneeling in both leagues. Most of the time he was the guy to beat.

His international shooting accomplishments he won medals at the 1974 World Shooting Championships, the 1974 and 1979

Pan American Games, the 1979 World Air Gun Championships. Cramer was member of the 2005 Pershing Team, the 2009

U.S. Robert Team and an amazing 15 times member of the U.S. Dewar Team.

He served on the NRA International Competitions Committee and the NRA Smallbore Committee. For over 28 years he was

the rifle coach of the Duquesne Collegiate Rifle Team while he taught Biology at Hopewell Area High School. He selected to

membership to the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.

Dave was actively shooting until he took ill this summer. Dave won the Black Hawk Match, the 6400 Mid Atlantic at Pal-

myra, Pa. and the 3200 Seitzland Match this past summer. In the Palmyra 6400 he shot a 6397-551X for the Aggregate and a

1600- 153X the last day to establish two more Senior records for those events.

Dave also touched many lives of Junior Shooters in Pennsylvania being involved in Jr. shooting for some 30 years or more.

Whether it be a Jr. Rifle Camp in Penna. or at the Camp Perry Nationals Dave was involved somewhere. Dave gave a lot

of his time behind the scenes doing paper work for Jr. Programs in Penna. David Cramer gave so much back to the sport

that he loved and studied.

While all these scores and accomplishments that he did over his lifetime I think he will be most remembered for his fine

personality and the person he was. He was a gentleman and very comfortable to be around. He set the bar very high for all

of us to follow whether it be in shooting, coaching, or in the way David J. Cramer led his life. I’m sure I join others who

feel lucky that they got to meet , talk to, or compete with David Cramer. We will all mourn this loss but let’s celebrate

David J. Cramer’s life and that way he will always live on.

He is survived by his wife, Alice and his daughter, Jannell.

2012 SERVICE PISTOL CHAMPIONSHIP & CAMP PERRY TEAMS

Submitted by Jeff Lloyd, Pistol Director

I usually write up the Service Pistol Championship and the Camp Perry reports

in 2 different articles, but this year I am reporting both in the same article. In 2012,

we tried a different format for the Service Pistol Championship. This was due to the

low numbers that were in competition in 2011. We were concerned that the cost of

travel was the contributing factor in this. To the end of making it easier for com-

petitors to attend a Service Pistol Championship match, we split the state into 3

regions and held matches at clubs in the East, West and Central regions. Also we

changed the format from firing a 900 possible aggregate, to a 400 possible aggre-

gate, like the President’s 100 match fired at Camp Perry. As the Camp Perry Service Pistol Team is selected from these competitors, we

thought that these changes would give us a larger pool of shooters to pick from to represent the State Association. As it turned out we went

from a total of 8 shooters in competition in 2011 to a total of 23 Pennsylvania resident, shooters in 2012. It appears as if we have made a dif-

ference, for the better, by making these changes. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can improve these matches, please feel free to

contact me with your suggestions.

The first Service Pistol Championship Match was fired at the Leni-Lenape Pistol Club in Boyertown, Pa, on June 2&3, 2012. A total of 31

shooters competed in the Eastern Section Match. The top PA resident shooter was Brian Keyser, from Birdsboro, PA. Brian fired a score of

361- 9x. The second Service Pistol Championship Match was fired at The White Oak Shooting Club in Greenville, PA, on June 9&10, 2012.

There were a total of 6 competitors that fired the Western Section Match. The top scorer at White Oak was Bruce Smith III, of Mount Union,

PA, with a score of 352-7x. The third and last Service Pistol Championship Match was fired at the Lewistown Pistol Club in Lewistown, PA,

on June 16, 2012. There were 7 shooters in competition at the Central Section Match. The top scorer at Lewistown was Steve Gibbons of

Lewistown, PA. Steve fired a score of 365-6x. This score made Steve the 2012 Pa State Service Pistol Champion. In Second place was Brian

Keyser, and finishing in third place was Patrick Kelly Jr. also from Lewistown. Pat finished with a score of 359-7x. Congratulations Steve,

Brian and Pat! Well done guys!

The other product of these matches is naming the members of the Service Pistol Team that will represent the PRPA at the National

Matches at Camp Perry. We take the 6 top scoring PRPA members and a shooter that has not fired on a Service Pistol Team at the National

matches. This shooter is called the “New” shooter. This New shooter must fire the match along with the 3 shooters that fire the best scores in

the Individual matches fired in the morning on Sunday at Camp Perry. The members of the 2012 team are as follows: Steve Gibbons, of Lew-

istown, PA, Patrick Kelly Jr, of Lewistown, PA, Brian Keyser of Birdsboro, PA, Ed Hoey of Newton Square, PA, Bruce Smith III of Mount

Union, PA, Tony Brong of Harrisburg, PA, and the “New” shooter was Paul Styner of Yardley, PA.

The Service Pistol Team Match is fired at Camp Perry on Sunday July 15, 2012. This is the last day of Pistol Competition at the nationals

for 2012. The top 3 shooters from the earlier individual matches were Steve Gibbons, Brian Keyser, and Ed Hoey,a long with the “New”

shooter Paul Styner. These 4 shooters posted a score of 1042-12 x. The team finished in second place to the Arizona Shooters Association.

This was out of 11 teams entered in the State Association Team event, they surely knew that the Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association

was there! Great job guys!

The Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association fielded 3 teams in the NRA sponsored National Matches Team matches at Camp Perry.

These teams were in the Master Classification, Expert Classification and in the Sharpshooter Classification. The team matches require that

there be 4 firing members in each team and that they fire .22 caliber pistols on the first day of team competition, Center Fire Pistols on the

second day of team competition, and .45 caliber Pistols on the third day of team competition. The course of fire is the National Match course,

a 10 shot Slow Fire target, a 10 shot Timed Fire target and a 10 shot Rapid fire target, for a possible 300 points total. The team members of

the PRPA Gold Team, classified Master, were Brian Dean from Butler, PA, Tom Mix from Ebensburg, PA, Brian Keyser form Birdsboro,

PA, Paul Styner from Yardley, PA, and Tony Brong from Harrisburg, PA. On the PRPA Silver Team, classified Expert, the members were,

Dennis Kriek from Glenshaw, PA, Jeff Lloyd from Cresson, PA, George Ban from Warrington, PA, Bill Hallman from Lansdale, PA, and

Steve Welsh from Stroudsburg, PA. The third team was the PRPA Bronze Team and was classified Sharpshooter. The members were Kirk

Anderson from State College, PA, Duane Lewis from Greenville, PA, Mike Brygrider from Stroudsburg, PA, David Oselinsky from Port

Matilda, PA, Dale Hockenberry from East Butler, PA, and Tom Fewer from Harleysville, PA.

Starting with the .22 Team Championship, the Gold Team, began with them firing a score of 1098-25x. This score place the Gold Team in

third place for the day. This was out of 7 teams that were in competition in the category and classification. The Silver Team fired a score of

1072-18x. This score placed the Silver team in 8th place out 19 teams. The Bronze Team finished the day with a score of 932-16x. This placed

the Bronze Team in 11th out 12 teams in the class.

On the second day of team competition, with Center Fire Pistols, the Gold Team posted a score of 1102-32x and placed 4th for the day. The

Silver Team fired a score of 1034-23x. This placed the team in 14th position. Moving to the Bronze Team, they posted a score of 991-7x. This

put them in third place for the day.

The third day of competition was time for the .45 caliber guns. The Gold Team fired a score of 1098-23 x. That score put them in Second

place with the .45’s. The Silver Team posted a score of 1085-23x. This also placed them in Second place. The Bronze Team finished the day

with a score of 970-10x. That score earned them 3th place for the day.

When the scores from all three days were added and posted, the Gold Team ended with 3298-80x to finish solidly in Second Place. The

Silver Team finished with 3191- 64x. This placed them in 8th place. Finally the Bronze Team finished up with 2893-23x and their final posi-

tion was in 7th place.

The teams are to be congratulated for a fine showing against the best shooters in the nation! We look forward to the Outdoor State Cham-

pionship matches and 2013 season and Camp Perry! GREAT JOB GUYS!

in Anniston, Alabama. In 2010 and 2011, this same group has gone to Nationals and returned with the air pistol team silver medal. This

year – they brought home the gold! Posting a score of 2163-37x; 64 points higher than last year and 10 more Xs was enough to get it done.

Darien defended her title with an 846.6 vs. the 824.9 she won with last year. That performance secured her position on the USA Shooting

Development Team. Beth had a strong 2nd day and finished in 5th with a 715(+96.7), while Caleb finished 13th with a 698. The team contin-

ued to work and improve until they achieved their goal. Beth and Caleb returned after completing their first year of college, making training

even more a challenge.

Making their first appearance at Nationals were Amber Sturrup, Andrew Sturrup and Stephen Wargo. They represented us well and had a

great experience by finishing in 6th in the mixed position team bracket. At the ages of 12, 14 and 12 respectively – they clearly represent the

future for Pa air pistol.

The team found a laser tag and go-kart track to “warm-up” for the match. Coach Sam Shenk found himself in the wall a couple times.

(Run with the Big Dogs – you’re gonna get bit!)

Pa was represented solely by Palmyra Sportsmen’s junior shooters. I know there are many junior pistol shooters in our state, many in 4-H

programs. Contact me Jeff Lutz at [email protected] or 717-303-9829 if you have a junior shooter who may want to shoot at nationals or the

state Junior Olympic Qualifier. Attending these matches are a great experience and a lot of fun!

McDONALD SPORTSMEN’S CLUB AUGUST BPCR SILHOUETTE MATCH

Submitted by Dana Knezevich

Conditions at the McDonald Sportsmen’s August 4th BPCR Silhouette match were a challenge for the twenty competitors. It was 95° and

humid with gusting winds from 4:00 to 8:00, which made it difficult for the shooters to read, evidenced by the low scores.

Ross Arnfield didn’t have any 10 in a row scores, but he shot consistently well throughout the day and finished with a very good score of

27/40 to win the Open Iron Sight category. Finishing one point behind Arnfield was Mike Shamonsky, who won the combined Master/AAA

class. Jim Radcliffe fol-

lowed Shamonsky by one

point to finish 2nd in the

Master/AAA class. The

combined class of AA/A/

B was won by Tom Barr

and Gary Fluharty took

2nd.

John Haagen didn’t

have any 10 in a row

scores in the scope cate-

gory, but like Arnfield, he

shot consistently well and

turned in a score of 27/40

to win the Open Scope

category. Roger Tremba

and Eli Liston finished 1st

and 2nd respectively in the

combined Master/AAA

scope class and in the

combined AA/A/B class,
