Introduc)on  Hi!    I’m  Sherry  Su.le,  Secondary  English  Language  Arts  and  Reading  Specialist  at  Region  XIII.  In  this  module,  you’ll  learn  about  the  English  I  wriBng  rubrics  for  the  STAAR  EOC  Assessment.      First,  we’ll  look  at  secBons  and  subsecBons  of  both  the  English  I  Literary  and  the  English  I  Expository  WriBng  Rubrics.  Then  we’ll  look  at  differences  between  the  English  I  wriBng  rubrics  and  the  TAKS  wriBng  rubric.

English  I  students  are  expected  to  write  a  literary  composiBon  and  an  expository  composiBon  on  the  STAAR.

Both  English  I  Literary  and  Expository  wriBng  rubrics  are  designed  on  a  four-­‐point  scale.  A  score  point  4  indicates  a  student’s  wriBng  as  an  Accomplished  wriBng  performance.  A  score  point  3  indicates  a  student’s  wriBng    as  a  SaBsfactory  wriBng  performance.  A  score  point  2  indicates  a  student’s  wriBng  as  a  Basic  wriBng  performance,  and  a  score  point  1  indicates  a  student’s  wriBng  as  Very  Limited  wriBng  performance.

Both  of  the  English  I  Literary  and  Expository  WriBng  Rubrics  include  three  major  secBons:    1.  OrganizaBon/Progression  2.  Development  of  Ideas  3.  Use  of  Language/ConvenBons

Within  each  major  secBon,  genre-­‐based  subsecBons  give  teachers  and  students  a  be.er  idea  of  how  composiBons  will  be  scored.  SubsecBons  from  the  Literary  WriBng  Rubric  differ  slightly  from  the  Expository  WriBng  Rubric.

As  we  transiBon  from  TAKS  to  STAAR,  it  may  be  helpful  to  address  some  similariBes  and  differences  between  the  TAKS  and  STAAR  wriBng  rubrics  in  order  to  help  students  succeed.

One  of  the  similariBes  between  the  two  rubrics  is  both  are  designed  on  a  four-­‐point  scale.

One  difference  between  the  rubrics  is  the  genre  of  wriBng  students  will  be  asked  to  create.  On  TAKS,  students  created  a  narraBve  composiBon  in  response  to  a  prompt.  On  the  STAAR,  students  will  create  a  Literary  piece  (short  story)  in  response  to  a  prompt  as  well  as  create  an  Expository  composiBon  in  response  to  a  prompt.

Another  difference  between  the  rubrics  is  that  secBon  categories  are  slightly  different.  On  the  TAKS  Rubric,  secBons  include  Focus  &  Coherence,  OrganizaBon,  Development  of  Ideas,  Voice,  and  ConvenBons.  On  the  STAAR  Rubrics,  the  secBons  include  OrganizaBon/Structure,  Development  of  Ideas,  and  Use  of  Language/ConvenBons.    Voice  proved  a  key  component  to  a  successful  TAKS  NarraBve  WriBng  Score.  In  the  English  I  Literary  and  Expository  Rubric,  Voice  is  not  a  secBon.
