SUNDAY, MAY 2SPRING WILDFLOWER WALK, MARKS RANCH____________________________________________

Come explore the historic 816-acre Marks Ranch, located off Hwy 68 next to Toro Park, and view a gloriousarray of colorful wildflowers. Led by local wildflower expert Gordon Williams, this 5-6 hour excursion features a moderate hike with some elevation gain and frequentstops. Expect to see blue-eyed grass, dwarf brodiaea, horkelia, common madia, pitcher sage, sweet cicely and tidy tips.

SATURDAY, JULY 10EXPERIENCE DORRANCE RANCH____________________________________________

Join us for a rare opportunity to experience the iconic Dorrance Ranch, located atop Mt. Toro and overlooking the Salinas Valley. This spectacular 4,300-acre property is owned by the Dorrances, a well-known and respectedMonterey County ranching family. The Dorrances workedwith The Nature Conservancy and The Big Sur Land Trust to protect the ranch through a conservation easement. Theouting will be guided by premier wildflower photographerDr. Rod Yeager. A member of the Dorrance family will welcome the group. Plan for a 4-5 hour excursion and a moderately strenuous hike.

DAY HIKESAll day hikers meet with volunteer hike leaders at 8:45 a.m. (7:45 a.m. for ArroyoSeco hikers) at The Big Sur Land Trust office at 126 Clock Tower Place, Suite 101,Carmel. Please dress appropriately for hiking and weather conditions and be sure to bring ample water and a bag lunch or snacks. Hikes cancelled in the event of severe rain and/or weather. RSVP for all outings to 831.625.5523, ext 1.

Visitors to Arroyo Seco Ranchwill discover over 1,600 acresof stunning open grasslands,blue oak and sycamore habi-tats, and the property’s crownjewel, the Arroyo Seco River,one of the most pristine free-flowing rivers in the SalinasRiver system. A strenuous 4-mile hike with an elevationgain of 1,000 feet featuresrocky terrain and steep ascentsand descents. Plan for an all-day excursion and bringample food, water, and sunscreen.

Located along Highway 68 southwest of Salinas, the 816-acre Marks Ranchoffers visitors wildflowermeadows, gently rolling hills,native grasslands and beautifuloak woodlands. The propertyalso includes a 1920s-era Mexican style hacienda, andwhile at the Ranch visitorswill learn about the inspiringlegacy of the Marks family.The moderately strenuous 6-mile hike has an elevationgain of 800 feet. Plan for a 5-hour visit.

Hikers at Glen Deven Ranchcan enjoy two distinct Big Surexperiences. A moderate 2-mile walk (round trip) atopGarrapata Ridge featuresbreathtaking views of the Pa-cific. After a break for lunch, a more strenuous 4-mile hikedescends 1,100 feet to theredwood-lined GarrapataCreek, then loops back up the Ridge. Plan for a 3 to 6-hour excursion, dependingon whether you choose one or both of these hikes

Mitteldorf Preserve is a magical sanctuary for some of Monterey County’s oldestredwood trees. Visitors havetwo options: a moderatelystrenuous hike (3 miles, with an elevation gain of1,000 feet) that passes throughold-growth redwood forestand includes panoramic vistas of coastal grasslands; or a more strenuous hike (5 miles, with an elevationgain of 1,900 feet) that fea-tures ancient stands of oakand magnificent madronegroves. Plan for a 5 to 6-hour excursion and bringplenty of water.

The easy 2-hour, 2-milewalk at Point Lobos Ranchfollows the serene San JoseCreek, which travels through a deep canyon where pinkrhododendrons bloom in the deep shade of the redwood forest.

At the northern portion of the 10,000-acre Palo CoronaRanch, hikers pass throughbeautiful grasslands andstands of oak en route to Inspiration Point and itssweeping views of OdelloFields and the Carmel Riveropening up into the ocean beyond. Plan for a strenuous4-mile hike (about 4hours), with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet.

PROGRAM OUTINGSSATURDAY, AUGUST 7 WILDLIFE TRACKING AT MARKS RANCH____________________________________________

This outing begins with wildlife researcher Tanya Diamondtalking about wildlife corridors in Monterey County and her studies at Marks Ranch. Participants will view an actualwildlife camera set-up and see recent wildlife photos captured from that spot. Tanya will teach how to interpretanimal tracks along the way and will also help participantsmake plaster castings of animal tracks as souvenirs of theday. This is a 3-4 hour family-oriented outing, with easy to moderate walking and frequent stops. Bring the kids!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11DISCOVER THE CARMEL RIVER PARKWAY____________________________________________

Join Donna Meyers, BSLT Director of Conservation, and learn about the vision and three key elements of theCarmel River Parkway – trails, restoration and education. As you walk along some of the first trails to be built you will learn about the natural history of the Carmel River and about efforts to restore its natural function and protectand revive river habitats. This will be a 4-5 hour moderatehike, with some elevation gain and frequent stops.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9SHORE BIRDS AND DUNE ECOLOGY, MARTIN DUNES____________________________________________

Tim Amaral, local birder extraordinaire, and Donna Meyers,BSLT Director of Conservation, will co-lead this outingthrough ancient sand dunes continuing out to the oceanedge. Discover the ecology of this unique habitat and learn to identify sea and shore birds. This will be a 4-5 hour moderate hike on sandy terrain, with a mild elevation gain and frequent stops.
