HIKING TRAILS / TRAIL RUNNING
VELETA ROUTEThis classic route takes you from the highest chairlift station along the old Veleta track to the emblematic peak of Sierra Neva-da. Along the way the hiker will be able to find the Posiciones del Veleta, a strategic point from which the San Juan Valley and the great peaks of the Penibetica mountain range can be spotted.
LAGUNA DE LAS YEGUAS ROUTEStarts at 3,000 metres, the highest point of the chairlift, taking us to the Laguna de las Yeguas and providing the great melting snow show, both at the large lagoon at the head of the Dílar Ri-ver as well as in the Lagunillos de la Virgen, located at about one kilometre higher up. There, the Mediterranean high mountain ecosystem can be seen in full splendour.
OBSERVATORIO ROUTEThis is a short walk that heads towards the heart of Borreguiles after beginning at the Laguna de Las Yeguas. Just 300 metres into the route, you will be able to see one of the largest wet pastures (“borreguiles”) located at the headwaters of the Dílar River.
VIRGEN DE LAS NIEVES ROUTEFrom Borreguiles, a gentle route that reaches the monument to the Virgen de las Nieves, a historic postcard view. The pano-ramic views of the Barranco de San Juan from this area and the frequent presence of ibex are other attractions to be found on this route.
CHORRERAS ROUTEThis route starts from Borreguiles towards the Valley of the Río Dílar in the area of Montebajo. These meadows cover lar-ge areas of the river banks and are home to a wide range of vegetation as well as being the habitat of a large part of Sierra Nevada species, including the renowned ‘Estrellas de las nieves’, plantago nivalis plant.
FUENTE ALTA ROUTERoute through the Suerte of Fuente Alta through its dense fo-rest of conifers. One visit to the farmhouse of Fuente Alta to know the way of life of the inhabitants of Sierra Nevada.
