I had first heard the tune called Sara Armstrong played in 2002by Chuck Levy, a former Columbus Ohio fiddler and a Presidentof the Florida Fiddlers Associaton. Chuck was back in Columbusfor a visit and played the tune for us. We liked it and learned it
from Chuck.In 2003 as I was getting ready to go to Clifftop for the Appala-chian String Band festival, it was also about time for Chuck Levyto make his annual visit to Columbus. So the Columbus Wednes-day Night Fiddle Jam began playing the Sara Armstrong tuneagain in preparation for Chucks visit. We found a recording of iton Ken Blooms bowed dulcimer CD.
When I arrived at Clifftop and set up camp, low and behold mynext door neighbors had a great jam going, and they were playingSara Armstrong. The group included Ken Bloom, and Todd ?from Pennsylvania. The next day we looked up Todd and heardthe story of Sara Armstrong and the tune called Sara Armstrong(which is actually called Old Reel No. 33 in this book) and thiswonderful book documenting Pennsylvania dance tunes in 1944.Todd also played a few other notable tunes for us, includingMaggots in the Sheep Hide, and Snouts and Ears of America.We were hooked!
Ken Bloom has been most generous in sending Leslie Lippert acopy that has obviously been duplicated many times. Since weknew most of our fiddle buddies would want a copy of this book I
decided to turn it into a PDF file so that it could be shared with-out having to copy it many more times.
It is my intention that this PDF be distributed for free.
