P ’ P J For me personally, January was an emotionally testing month but also an amazingly rewarding family time. As most of you already know, I had to be rushed to Bunbury hospital just after New Year with a perforated appendix and I would never wish that on anyone. However, all is well now and I am back into swimming. Thank you to all my lovely friends who sent me well wishes. (I now have a new respect for all nurses!) Speaking of nurses, it is great to see Caroline back into swimming following her hernia operation jut before Christmas Also Barbara Hart (retired midwife) is recuperating in the pool after her knee surgery. I was mortified to have to miss the first Stubby Stakes social of the year that I believe was a great night. Thank you to the committee for keeping the show going. Training and club nights have been well attended in general with the exception of one Tuesday evening when there were only three swimmers – one of them being Garry – and when it came to removing and replacing the covers Elaine Bourne and Claire Dunstan realised what a massive task it is and will definitely be “Flipper” recipients at the next awards! On that subject – it would be appreciated if you could all help out with the covers. If you swim early and then leave, perhaps you could think about moving the rollers over in position to enable the later swimmers to simply pull the covers over. It is an onerous duty that is usually left to the few who complete the full sessions. As we are enjoying a surge of swimmers in the pool on Monday evenings, Aerobic swims will no longer be con-ducted in lane 6 and you are encouraged to attend the Saturday afternoon sessions at the Darling Range pool where the water is cooler and you can enjoy a social afternoon tea afterwards. Times are 2.45 to around 5 pm every second Saturday. Open Water swimming continued throughout January and I believe Maida Vale could be in contention to take out the trophy if we carry on entering events. We had two separate groups attending Australia Day swims in Mandurah and Sorrento with varying successes. It was terrific to have our newest member, Sarah (?) compete at Mandurah. The end of January was very special for Gwyn and me with the arrival of our second grandchild. Ceinwen gave birth to a little girl, Genevieve Cariad and both are very well and gorgeous. (Cariad is Welsh for Darling) The birth coincided with our club Pizza Night and all through dinner I was getting updates on the progress so it made the evening very special for us with Genevieve arriving at 9.30 pm – allowing us to finish our pizzas and head down to the hospital. To add to the excitement and finish the month the Super Blue Moon and Eclipse party at David and Jan Pether’s home was a great success. Albeit we couldn’t actually see the moon for the trees unless we wandered off into the paddock!! Hilarious! It was, however, terrific fun enjoying a post training bbq on their lawn in a beautiful setting and – even though we had an unrestricted view from our own house – I wouldn’t have missed the experience with my Lunatic friends. Leading up to the AGM I wish the present Committee all the very best and thank them for working so hard last year and hope they consider re-standing for their positions – all of which become vacant. Please let the committee know if you would be interested in filling one of the roles as we are always looking for new fresh ideas. FROM THE HILL……………………ANDREA.
Masters Swimming WA is hosting the Nationals in April and will be asking for volunteers to help over the championships The National Championships is the premier event on the Masters Swimming Australia calendar. The 2018 MSA National Championships (N18) will be held in Perth from 18-21 April at HBF Stadium, Western Australia's leading aquatic facility.
